Overview

The Acura ILX after a major change last year is a carry-forward model for this year. The 2020 ILX starts at $25,900 and sees no price increase this year. The ILX doesn't offer much in terms of choice, you get only a single powertrain that sends power to the front wheels. The ILX shares the base engine of its elder sibling the TLX which in the lighter ILX helps it do quicker acceleration timings. But all that performance takes a hit on the real-world gas mileage and it returns the lowest gas mileage in the segment. Moving inside cost-cutting is evident although the ILX is pitched as a luxury sedan.

The front seats do offer the luxury appeal but with cramped rear seats and the smallest cargo space in the segment, the ILX is like a compromise in the name of luxury. Add to that the dual-screen infotainment setup with several switches and knobs around the dash makes the cabin look cluttered and unsophisticated. Thus for this review, we haven't pitched the ILX against its target sedans like Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Audi A3, or the BMW 2-Series. Instead, we have compared it with the likes of Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, and Mazda 3. Read our review on the 2020 ILX to find out how it fares against its more humble rivals.

Buying Advice

Your basic ILX is nothing without the Premium package. Thus get that package as it manages to keep the price low and at the same time add all features you would ever need. However, if you also wish to have the premium sound system and the convenience of in-built navigation we suggest adding the Technology package to your shopping cart.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Acura takes great pride in the ILX’s $25,900 aggressive price which is much lower than what the German brands charges. But don’t get us wrong even the most inferior plastic on say a Mercedes-Benz would feel better than the Acura and you only get what you pay here. As for the powertrain, the ILX gets an i-VTEC inline-4 engine mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The power delivery is smooth and the ILX posts some quick acceleration numbers but poor fuel economy is the price you pay for this. The cabin of the ILX is designed as a premium one but look closely and you will find why it is priced so low. That said, the strong suit of the Acura ILX still is its standard safety features bundled as AcuraWatch and its top-notch safety ratings.

Features
4.0/10

The 2020 Acura ILX is offered only in one trim and three packages Premium, Technology, and A-Spec. The Premium package can be had by paying $1,850 over the ILX's base price and adds features like a dual-display screen, a seven-speaker stereo, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, etc. The Technology package is priced at a premium of $1,900 and the A-Spec package is priced at $2,000. Adding either of the two packages requires you to first have the Premium package. The Technology package adds AcuraLink telematics services, a 10-speaker premium sound system, and navigation while the A-Spec package adds larger wheels and unique exterior and interior trims.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2020 Acura ILX is offered in only one engine and drivetrain option so the gas mileage is pretty straightforward, the 2020 ILX returns 24 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg under mixed driving conditions. The ILX has a 13.2-gallon fuel tank capacity which is more than enough to returns 300 miles plus and 400 miles plus of range in the city and on the highway respectively.

The Honda Civic thanks to using the smaller engine as compared to the competition is the most efficient beating the city gas mileage of ILX by a margin of 8 mpg and by the same margin on the highway. What's even more surprising is that the Camry which is powered by a similar capacity engine as the ILX returns better gas mileage. On paper, the Camry returns 5 mpg more in the city and 7 mpg more on the highway compared to the ILX.

Interior
6.0/10

"While some surfaces have nice soft-touch coverings, the bulk of the ILX's interior feels hollow and plasticky an unfortunate carryover from the ILX's last-gen Civic roots."- Edmunds

Get inside the 2020 ILX and you would quickly realize there is a lack of real estate. The front seats sit high above the ground and provide sufficient support and space but move to the back and taller folks will find the space to be a pinch. The cabin quality isn't exactly low-rent but there is a couple of plasticky and cheap materials is not so prominent areas. Compared that to its actual rivals i.e. the Germans you would quickly realize why the ILX has a far lower asking price. Even though the ILX is an entry-level Acura it does pack in a host of features like heated seats, simulated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, etc.

The infotainment on the other hand is a 5-inch unit on the standard model while going for the Premium package adds an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 7-inch touchscreen sitting at the top of it with the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-speaker sound system, HD Radio, etc. Standard features include a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, etc. While the Technology package when had along with the Premium package adds navigation and a 10-speaker premium sound system.

In the name of practicality, the 2020 ILX is not that giving as it only offers 12.4 cubic feet of space in its trunk, which is below average in the segment. If you have a couple of luggage to keep then either you leave the luggage or the rear passengers as the rear seats only fold flat instead of 60/40-split which is another bummer.

Inside Acura ILX you can fit four adults with ease although the seating for five is what it offers. Compared to the Mazda 3, which is the least spacious among the rivals, the ILX falls short in rear legroom and headspace. While the Camry has undisputedly the most spacious rear seats. Coming to the cargo space here also the ILX retains the last spot while the Civic with over 2 cubic feet more cargo space takes the first spot followed by the Camry.

Interior Features:

  • Eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel

Exterior
4.0/10

"The Acura ILX isn't much of an attention-grabber. The Acura ILX's styling is pleasant, but hardly noteworthy."- The Car Connection

The 2020 Acura ILX gets no changes as it got a complete redesign inside out just last year. The overall design remains subtle yet contemporary The Diamond Pentagon grille at the front combined with the Jewel-Eye LED headlights lend the Acura ILX a more premium and sophisticated look. Although it's not the most striking sedan if you compare it to the likes of the Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class but still for a lower price tag the looks aren't that bad either.

At the rear, you get a sloping roofline which surely does eat up into the headroom but gives the ILX a nice and sporty silhouette. Add the A-Spec package with the Premium package and you get a rear spoiler, larger wheels, and a couple of more sporty visual flair.

Acura has made the ILX into a decent executive sedan but it's not that sizeable as other cars in the lot. It's 182.2-inches long which is 10-inches shorter than the Camry. It's not that wide either the 70.6-inch width is again not competitive resulting in a smaller cabin. The wheelbase is relatively average at 105-inches where the likes of Camry offer almost 6-inches more of the wheelbase thus liberating a generous amount of real estate inside the cabin.

One thing to note here is that even though the Civic measure almost similar to the ILX, give or take one inch, it still has a more spacious cabin and a bigger trunk between the two.

Exterior Features:

  • All-LED exterior lights
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Available 18-inch alloy wheels

Safety
7.0/10

When it comes to safety and reliability Honda is very conscious about their cars, the same blood runs through Acura's veins too. Acura's signature AcuraWatch suite consists of a number of safety suits like emergency braking, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and more. The crash-test agencies also rated the 2020 Acura ILX well with the NHTSA giving it a perfect safety score of five stars and the IIHS rating the ILX with the highest rating of 'Good' in all its six parameters.

Safety Features:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Surround-view parking camera
  • Available blind-spot monitoring
  • Available rear cross-traffic alert

2020 Acura ILX vs 2020 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic and the Acura ILX are cut from the same cloth, but Honda put their heart in crafting the Civic while the ILX is modeled on the previous version of the Civic. Though the base level Civic is backed with decent power but it is not quite potent like the Acura. The interior is tasteful and Civic's reliability and handling prowess are unprecedented.

In terms of efficiency, Honda is the class leader, which is more of a reason why you are better off with the Civic than the gas-guzzling ILX. Also, the availability of a naturally aspirated engine and a turbocharged engine option on the Civic compared that to only one engine option on the ILX gives you far more flexibility.

2020 Acura ILX vs 2020 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry and the Acura ILX share a similar capacity engine under the hood but the Camry makes slightly more power and torque while the ILX is quicker in terms of acceleration. The more powerful Camry although slow delivers fantastic gas mileage when compared to that the ILX looks like a gas-guzzler.

Getting inside both the cars you won't find much of a difference in terms of quality although the cabin of the ILX looks more premium. But when it comes to space and overall comfort the Camry takes the lead here. So unless you want to make a statement with the Acura brand in your garage we suggest sticking to the tried and tested Camry.

Final Verdict
6.0/10

Acura kept things simple for the 2020 ILX, one engine, one transmission, and a couple of exclusive packages. The engine is naturally aspirated which is not that common these days and has more power than any of the other sedans in the competition. The entry-level luxury badge may seem nice on paper but the reality is somewhat inferior. The interior feels plasticky and the dual infotainment screens feel distracting and at times confusing to use.

The new aggressive grille and taillights feel sharp and add a little bit to the ILX's premium vibe while on the safety front there is hardly any compromise and the ILX was rated well by the agencies. Overall it's a solid offering in the executive segment but buying it as an entry-level luxury is not the best idea as the German rivals feel more premium and have a higher badge value while its humble rivals are a better package overall compared to it.
