Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2015 model year Volkswagen Tiguan offers a 2.0L Inline-4 engine as the standard power unit. The engine is rated at a fairly respectable 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes mated to a decent 6-speed automatic transmission, which unfortunately feels laggy and poorly optimized.

The engine itself is impeccably refined, and offers excellent city-driving comfort. However, it gets annoyingly breathless on highways, and barely manages to keep up with faster cars passing by. The transmission feels lazy too, with the whole powertrain being well suited for city driving. The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan sprints from 0 to 60 MPH in a tardy 8.2 seconds, which again, highlights the lethargy of the powertrain.

Comparing the competition, the 2015 Ford Escape comes off as the quickest vehicle in the lot, thanks to the supremely optimized engine. The Ford also manages faster quarter-mile times. The Honda CR-V, on the other hand, offers the least power, showcasing a significant power deficit in comparison to the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan. The Ford Escape also offers the highest top speeds among the competitors.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan offers underwhelming mileage, and certainly is not the best in the segment. The 2015 model year Tiguan manages to return only 21 MPG in the city, while delivering an unacceptable 26 MPG on highways. The result is a combined EPA fuel efficiency of 23 MPG. The Tiguan also comes fitted with a 16.8-gallon fuel tank. This enables the SUV to traverse up to 436 miles on the highway without the need for refueling.

Among the competition, the 2015 Honda CR-V comes off as the clear winner in terms of fuel economy, crushing the rivals in the combined, city and highway figures. This is not surprising, given that the Honda happens to offer the least powerful engine among the competition. However, the Volkswagen Tiguan comes with the largest fuel tank, while the Mazda CX-5 offers the highest driving range among the competition.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan offers a simple, but highly systematic interior design. Everything feels extremely well put together, and the cabin offers impressive driver ergonomics. The interior features metallic accents, such as those on the dashboard and on the lower end of the steering wheel, which adds a classy touch to the cabin. The hybrid gauge cluster features a small LCD that displays several driving parameters in real time.

The seats feel sufficiently comfortable and well-bolstered, and come finished in premium-grade cloth. Higher trims fetch you nice leatherette seats with power adjustable settings. There’s also a choice of opting for dual-tone seats on the SEL trim. There’s plenty of passenger room in the cabin, along with practicality options such as cup holders, door bins and a cavernous glove compartment. All in all, the 2015 Tiguan scores well in the interior department.

7.0/10

Unlike many competitors in this segment, the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan is devoid of any unnecessary design elements, and sports a clean, dignified aesthetic.

The font fascia features a bold grille, along with sharp headlights that feature smart-looking DRLs. The rear follows suit, featuring sharp yet refined taillights and a clean, composed aesthetic. The side profile gives the Tiguan the air of a vehicle larger than its class, while the modern-looking alloy wheels add to the class factor of the Tiguan’s exterior design.
