Overview

The current generation of the Toyota 4Runner has been in the market for more than a decade now which makes it one of the oldest models in the competition. The 2024 Toyota 4Runner was going for a complete redesign but Toyota seems to have taken a turn around this time. The new fifth generation of the Toyota 4Runner is still some way out and this year the 4Runner is gonna be just a carryover model. Check out the video below by "Meyn Motor Group" and find out how the car community is reacting to the aging 4Runner.

The exterior of the 2024 4Runner gets a new Terra paint color for the TRD Pro model, and an Underground color similar to the one seen on the 2024 Tacoma, and that's about it. The highly anticipated fifth-gen 4Runner is still at least a year off, and enthusiasts will have to make do with the decade-old model only. The 2024 Toyota 4Runner price is hiked by $300 and will start at $40,455.

This year also sees the omission of the 40th Anniversary Edition along with the retro graphics and the TRD Pro's Solar Octane Orange paint. The 2024 4Runner faces competition from its rivals like the 2024 Land Rover Defender 90, the 2024 Ford Bronco, and the 2024 Jeep Wrangler. The Toyota 4Runner 2024 release date is yet to be announced but expect it to be out by the end of 2023. Read ahead to find out more about the new 4Runner.

Buying Advice

Since it's a carry forward model this year, we recommend opting for the 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium. It not only gets the 4WD drivetrain as standard, it also adds plenty of features over the lower models. The starting price of $46,880 keeps it in the contention against its rivals as it is pretty expensive to begin with.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The new 4Runner 2024 will not get many changes but will continue to offer a potent engine, great off-road capabilities, and also continue to be reliable in the long run. Toyota is one of the few brands that offer a complimentary service maintenance plan for 2 years or 25,000 miles. The limited warranty on offer is for 3 years/36,000 miles while the powertrain is covered in warranty for 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Finance offers for the Toyota 2024 4Runner should start at 9.17% APR for 60 months while the lease deals should start at $680/month for a 36-month tenure. The new 4Runner is yet to be tested but the previous model had a solid 84/100 score in the J.D. Power ratings. The 5-year cost of ownership of the Toyota 4Runner is around $51,200. Both these figures should continue for the 2024 model year as well.

Features
8.0/10

The current generation of the Toyota 4Runner is available in five trims and an additional special edition trim level. It comes in SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro trim levels. It also gets a 40th Anniversary Special Edition. But with the fifth generation, you can expect some more trim levels in the lineup. The 40th Anniversary trim will be discontinued and the 2024 4Runner price should now start at $40,455 excluding the $1,395 destination charge.

Other than that, the trim configuration for the 4Runner remains constant this year. The 2024 4Runner TRD Pro trim will continue to be the most capable trim and will come with the Fox QS3 internal bypass shocks that are also seen in the new Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. Some trims get an option for a third row of seats for $805 while driver aids like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic are all standard across the lineup.

Release Date

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner release date is yet to be announced but the details are out already. Although the bookings for the same might begin earlier by the end of 2023 with deliveries starting in early 2024.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

We'll have to wait for Toyota to bring us new age turbocharged engines to the 4Runner lineup. Till then the 4Runner 2024 continues to be powered by the tried and tested 4-liter V6 mated to the aging 5-speed autonatic transmission. Though the entire powertrain is in dire need of an upgrade, it is pretty potent even today. The V6 produces 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque and propels the heft SUV to 60 MPH in 7.7 seconds from standstill. The top speed is limited to a rather conservative 113 MPH but all 4Runner models can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

There's an option 4WD drivetrain also of offer but it is comparitively expensive for a car of this segment. In terms of driving dynamics, the transmission is slow to respond which shows the engine's erratic power delivery and one needs to have a heavy foot for quick overtakes. The off-road focussed nature of the SUV means soft-tuned suspension for tackling the rough terrain. But this too translates to a slightly bumpy ride at high speeds. The steering is pretty light and precise which makes it feel easy to maneuver in tight city spots or the tough trail.

When compared to its rivals, there is no doubting the fact that the Land Rover Defender is leaps and bounds ahead of the pack in terms of performance and off-road capabilities. That said, it comes with a very hefty price tag as well. The Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler are more direct competitors. The Bronco gets a modern turbo-4 engine which makes it quicker off the mark. But it is not well-suited for city driving and also has a lower towing capacity as standard. The Wrangler offers similar acceleration performance with its V6 but is also best suited for the rough. Both the American SUVs also get optional powertrains which makes them more potent than the 4Runner.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Toyota 4Runner specs remain the same this year with the carry-forward model. This means that the 2024 Toyota 4Runner MPG ratings also remain the same at 16 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highways. Opting for the 4WD drivetrain will further lower the fuel efficiency by a small margin.

While the disappointing fuel economy figures are a big negative for this popular midsize SUV, the 23-gallon fuel tank capacity does a decent job. The maximum driving range of 437 miles while cruising on the highways is on par with the segment standards.

Until the next generation 4Runner comes along, rivals will continue to outplay the Toyota here. The turbocharged engine under the hood of the Bronco offers the best fuel economy ratings here while the Wrangler's V6 manages to match up with the turbo-4 powering the Defender. That said, the smaller gas tank capacity of the Bronco means that it is the Land Rover that offers the best range.

Interior
8.0/10

The interior of the ongoing Toyota 4Runner has been one of the most lacking parts of the SUV. However, the fact that the 2024 4Runner does not get a redesign means that we have to make do with ongoing styling for at least another year. The simple utilitarian layout is well complemented though with solid build quality and easy-to-maintain materials. There is abundant space for the front-row passengers and in spite of the limited legroom, it is pretty comfortable for an average American at the back.

What the 4Runner lacks in rear-seat legroom, it makes up with its 47.2 cu-ft of trunk space. Opting for the optional third-row seats will increase the seating capacity to 7, but the last row would only be suited for young kids. There are plenty of large and deep cubby holes around the cabin and the cargo area offers quite a bit of versatility. That said, the loading lip of the cargo area is too high, and hauling cargo in it is quite a task. Opting for the optional pull-out cargo deck would be the sensible choice as it also doubles up as a tailgate for seating at an outing.

Apart from the lackluster materials quality and the switch gears from a generation ago, the technology is also a step behind the competition. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard across the lineup. Although the interface isn't the most modern or attractive, it is pretty intuitive to use. The tunning knobs and physical buttons further enhance practicality while on the move. There's a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot & smartphone integration on offer with an 8-speaker audio system, but built-in navigation and the JBL music system are optional for all models except for the Limited trim.

The Land Rover again is the most comfortable and luxurious of the lot owing to its higher price. It offers premium materials and state-of-the-art technology to compensate for its much higher price tag. Even the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler have superior gadgets on offer. But the 4Runner triumphs over the American SUVs for its spacious and practical cabin. The biggest difference is the seating capacity of just 4 in the Bronco & Wrangler. While the Defender lacks cargo space, there is also a larger Defender 110 for the same.

Standout features:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats w/leather interior upholstery
  • Dual-zone climate control w/rear HVAC vents
  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system w/Android Auto/Apple CarPlay
  • Satellite radio w/real time traffic
  • 4G Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity
  • 15-speaker 550W JBL premium sound system

Exterior
8.5/10

The styling too remains the same as last year for the 4Runner as there are literally no changes made in this regard whatsoever. Despite its age, the 2024 4Runner Toyota still looks pretty good on the streets. The large front grille, boxy exterior with muscular styling along the sides, and the big chunky wheels, all offer a macho appeal to this tough brawny SUV.

Add to that the maximum ground clearance of 9.6 inches and a minimum of 9 inches, a 33-degree angle of approach, and a 26-degree angle of departure, all showcase that the 4Runner means business. Be it rock crawling, water wading, or exploring the wilderness, it can do them all.

The Toyota 4Runner is the only SUV in the competition that comes as standard with a four-door configuration. But all other rivals come with either two-door or four-door configurations. In terms of dimensions, the new 4Runner 2024 is the largest one here but the Defender is the widest and lightest, offering better stability in rough terrain. In terms of design, although all of them look pretty rugged, the Defender adds a bit of panache to its tough appeal. That said, the old-school folks wouldn't get over the Wrangler's timeless design.

Safety
8.0/10

When it comes to safety, Toyota never disappoints its buyers. Even though the ongoing Toyota 4Runner has been in the market for so long, it has not compromised on the safety aspect and scored pretty well in the safety ratings. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the current Toyota 4Runner an impressive score of 4 out of 5 stars in their crash test rating.

Even the IIHS has also given it a 'Good' rating in most aspects of its safety tests. But it gets a marginal rating in the small overlap front: driver-side test. The Toyota 4Runner offers the Toyota Safety System 2.0 as standard which covers all the necessary driver aids as standard across the lineup.

Key Safety Features:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • 360 surround-view camera
  • Forward collision warning w/automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind-spot monitor w/rear cross-traffic alert
  • Front & rear parking sensors

Competition
8.0/10

2024 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2024 Land Rover Defender 90

The one area where the Toyota 4Runner was always behind the Defender was in the cabin feel and ride quality. The Toyota 4Runner has never been a good choice in terms of ride quality on the highway or city road conditions. It used to feel at home only on rough terrain and that's where the Defender shines, offering the best of both worlds.

The Toyota 4Runner also comes out as an appealing choice as it offers so many capabilities for a lower price. But it is hard to beat the effortless driving experience and capabilities of the Land Rover Defender 90. While the additional price seems worth it, the 4Runner offers much more value to its buyers.

2024 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2024 Ford Bronco 4-door

The Ford Bronco looks quite new compared to the current generation of the Toyota 4Runner and beats it with a huge margin when you look at the overall package. The Bronco beats the Toyota in terms of acceleration performance and frugality and also offers superior technology at an affordable price tag.

But when it comes to versatility, there's no touching the 4Runner. There's plenty of space inside its cabin for both the passengers and their luggage, it is more reliable in the long run and offers great value with its complimentary maintenance and warranty programs. Unless you have to have an off-road-only SUV, the 2024 4Runner is the way to go.

2024 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4-door

The Toyota 4Runner and the Jeep Wrangler are two legendary SUVs known for their off-road capabilities around the world. The Jeep Wrangler also comes with the same quirks as the current generation Toyota 4Runner in many ways. However, it is not as old as the 4Runner and seems a good choice for a vehicle that is known for its off-road prowess over anything else.

But then again, the complete package on offer from Toyota is hard to beat. Add to that the reliability issues in Jeep and the very basic and utilitarian nature of the Wrangler, and scales tip even more towards Toyota. We'd definitely still pick the 4Runner in this comparison.

Final Verdict

Although the current generation of the Toyota 4Runner has not received a redesign in more than a decade, it still manages to sell in pretty good numbers. The reliability of Toyota, along with the off-road capabilities that it brings, makes it an appealing choice for its segment.

While every American enthusiast is keen on a new-gen 4Runner, the current model still ticks the right boxes for most buyers. The rivals also don't offer enough competition in this segment. Maybe that's why it is still the second-most selling vehicle from Toyota and we don't expect to see any drop this year too.
