Overview

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is available for sale with a starting price of $37,000. There is a price bump of a couple of dollars due to the addition of the new Speed Delivery Door feature as an option. The Sprinter is available with just one engine- a 188- hp 2.4L turbo-4 engine but it can be configured with two roof heights and wheelbase. Sure, this engine is underpowered but it is the most refined van in the segment.

The Sprinter stands out in its segment with a class-leading payload capacity of 3,459 pounds while the towing capacity is limited to 5,000 pounds. The Sprinter Cargo Van can seat up to two individuals only if you want to accommodate more people, the Sprinter Passenger Van is also available. The Sprinter also shines with loads of safety tech and an outstanding cargo area. In the cargo van segment, the Sprinter goes against the Chevy Express and the GMC Savana.

Buying Advice

Recommending a particular trim here is a bit tricky as there is no differentiation based on features. The payload capacity is what differentiates these trims and thus we suggest picking the one that offers a bit higher payload capacity i.e. 2500 trim. It offers a payload capacity of 3,459 pounds. Also, buy the Premium Plus package as it adds a 10.25-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, navigation system, wireless charging, and traffic sign assist for $1,793.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

While it isn't extraordinarily classy or fantastically unique, the Sprinter is a bit nicer than your average cargo van- Edmunds

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a pricier option in the cargo van segment but it certainly is the most comfortable and refined van currently available in the U.S. market. It offers class-leading payload capacity, mind-blowing cargo volume and can be configured according to your requirements. This premium van is also offered with an array of active safety techs but its biggest drawback is its underpowered engine.

Like its high price tag, the ownership costs of the Sprinter can be more than its rivals. You may have to shell out approximately $8,000 every year for the van's maintenance, fuel, repairs, and other costs. Compared to its rivals, it is a bit more but it is a worthy investment as the Sprinter offers certain features that its competitors don't offer. Also, the Sprinter is arguably a popular van in the U.S. and hence, good resale value.

Features

The Sprinter can be configured with multiple body lengths and roof heights to suit just about any need- Carbuzz

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is available in just two trims but two roof heights and two wheelbases. The 1500 trim starts from $37,000 with a standard wheelbase configuration while the 2500 trim with an extended wheelbase and high roof option may cost just over $48,000. The AWD system is not available for gas-fed models.

Except for different payload capacities, the equipment list remains the same across the trim lineup. As a typical Mercedes-Benz, the Sprinter can be equipped with many technological and convenience features. The Speed Delivery Door debuts this year that includes double swiveling glass doors. These doors function automatically through sensors.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Unfortunately, the EPA doesn't really evaluate commercial vehicles for fuel-efficiency- Carbuzz

The EPA never gives an estimated gas mileage for the commercial vehicles and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter falls under this category. However, based on real-world testing and consumer feedback, you can expect at least 21 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on a highway, and 22 MPG combined. These figures are not that bad for a cargo van.

The Sprinter is fitted with a 22-gallon fuel tank, which is the smallest in its segment. Therefore, the Sprinter can drive up to 462 miles in the city, 528 miles on a highway, and 484 miles combined. It would have delivered more range had a  larger tank been fitted. All in all, the Sprinter buyers will not really look up to its fuel economy but it is decent.

The fuel economy of the GMC Savana and the Chevy Express is considerably less as they house a powerful V6. However, their large fuel tank saves the day in terms of range. The Sprinter outruns the GM siblings with better fuel estimates but, keep in mind, it makes nearly 100 horses less than them. If you want better efficiency, look for a diesel Sprinter.

Interior
8.8/10

The Sprinter gets high marks for an abundance of passenger space, a user-friendly control layout and better-than-expected visibility- Edmunds

Being an offering from the Mercedes-Benz marque, it goes without saying that the Sprinter’s cabin is the most comfortable and well put in the van segment. The cabin and material quality are really good and Mercedes-Benz has done a great job here even though the Sprinter is priced similar to the other cargo van from mainstream brands. The overall layout of the cabin is ergonomically sorted and the outward visibility is great courtesy of the sloping hood and big windshield.

The Sprinter Cargo Van will come standard with a two-seat configuration. It can be replaced with a bench seat to seat an extra passenger. Cloth seats are standard but leatherette upholstery is available. These seats offer decent comfort levels and ensure long hauls aren’t tiresome for the occupants. Creature comforts such as power adjustability and heated seats are optional. As for cabin space, the Sprinter offers enough head and legroom to accommodate six-footers.

Being a van not every manufacturer’s prime focus is on the infotainment but Mercedes-Benz has again surprised us by throwing the 7 or 10.25-inch infotainment display that runs on Mercedes’ MBUX system in the optional features list. The standard system comes with a small LCD screen with AM/FM Radio and Bluetooth functionality. The optional package also gets you navigation and wireless device charging. All these features assure you won't be bored while doing your duty.

Coming to cargo capacity, the Sprinter offers a class-leading 319 cubic feet of cargo space. High roof models with a longer wheelbase can provide up to 370.8 cubic feet of cargo space, the best in the segment. However, swapping to high roof models reduces the roof-top payload capacity from 660 pounds to 330 pounds. Inside, the Sprinter can haul up to 3,459 pounds of weight. Some main interior features are:

  • Tilt & telescopic steering wheel
  • 4-way manually-adjustable front cloth seats
  • Automatic climate contorl
  • Manual air conditioning
  • Push-button start
  • Manual-sliding side doors

Exterior

Tall, somewhat narrow vans are the European way- Kelly Blue Book

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter does not see any exterior design changes. The looks of the Sprinter follow a set pattern and there is hardly a wiggle room for the designer to spin off something radical. Among the vans, the Sprinter looks the most handsome and upmarket. The massive front grille with the tri-star logo sitting right in between is flanked by a set of halogen headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. Below this, you get a black-color keyed bumper that houses the small circular halogen fog lights.

Except for the front fascia, there is hardly anything to talk about the looks of the Sprinter. Unlike its rivals, the Sprinter has a low ground clearance of 7.9 inches, which helps in easy entry and exit from the vehicle. At 233.5 inches, the Sprinter is the longest van in its segment and therefore, a roomier cargo area. A new feature for this year is Speed Delivery Door that replaces the conventional rear sliding doors. The doors open and close automatically and can save a lot of time while delivering stuff.

The GM siblings are nearly 600 pounds heavier than the Sprinter. This affects its on-road performance and handling characteristics. However, its short overall length can be helpful while parking at tight spots. The Sprinter remains the tallest van even in the standard height configuration so loading tall items wouldn't be an issue. Some other exterior features are:

  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Halogen headlights
  • Fog lamps
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Black bodyside moldings
  • Black grille
  • Black window trim

Safety
6.0/10

Mercedes provides the Sprinter with a list of driver-assistance technology, but the majority of systems offered are optional- CarAndDriver

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter comes under the class of commercial vans and hence neither NHTSA nor IIHS has tested them for their safety. This doesn't imply that the Sprinter is an unsafe vehicle. The Sprinter is built by the same brand that has a good reputation for building strong and reliable vehicles.

The Sprinter packs a total of six airbags that includes dual front, front side, and side curtain. Other than this, the Sprinter also offers a host of driver-assist features as a part of the standard and optional features. So a well-equipped Sprinter will no doubt be among the safest vans in its segment. These features include:

  • 360-degree camera
  • Hill-start assist
  • Hill descent assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Following distance indicator
  • Headlight assistant
  • Active lane keep assist
  • Hill-start assist
  • Active brake assist
  • Blind-spot assist
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Crosswind assist
  • Attention assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Trailer stability assist

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 1500 vs 2022 GMC Savana 2500

The GMC Savana in the true sense is the dinosaur of the van segment. It may house a powerful V6 and boasts a better towing capacity but the Sprinter is ahead of the Savana in other aspects. The Sprinters has a better fuel economy, is quicker on the road, has more cargo volume, and more importantly, comes with a handful of driver-assist features. No doubt, the Sprinter is a better pick.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 1500 vs 2022 Chevrolet Express 2500

The Chevy Express belongs to the same parent company as the Savana. This means they share the same engine, towing and cargo capacities, etc. Like the Savana, the Express also has the same weaknesses such as less cargo space, fewer safety features, and of course, lower fuel economy. In the current scenario , we don’t see the Express cutting it a deal against the much superior Sprinter.

Final Verdict
6.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a comfortable, spacious, and safe luggage hauler. The brand has tried to price it competitively without compromising on the safety and comfort of the occupant. This is the reason enough to convince anyone to invest in this van. A choice of three roof height and two wheelbases options gives a lot of flexibility and choice to the customers. Thus, if you are a regular cargo hauler and want to experience the best customer experience, we recommend giving a look to the Sprinter.
