As the flagship Mercedes-Benz SUV, the GLS-Class is known for offering the best features and technologies the brand has to offer, following in the footsteps of the S-Class sedan. The range starts with the GLS 450 that is loaded to the gills with luxury and gets a potent turbocharged engine as standard with plenty of performance and a hybrid system. Features like an air suspension system are included as standard to keep up to 7 occupants comfortable and relaxed. However, as with all modern luxury SUVs, reliability is a concern for the GLS-Class.

Despite its recent launch, the GLS has been recalled over 5 times so far and there are 3 registered complaints to consider. Let's take a closer look at the issues reported by owners and recall details.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - Several owners have reported engine issues like loss of power while on the move. Overheating issues cause the GLS to enter limp home mode, severely limiting performance.
  • Steering - Some owners reported power steering issues and loss of steering control while on the move, although Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for the same.

Electrical Problems

  • Electrical malfunction - The hybrid system caused issues for some owners, leading to battery malfunctions and limiting performance. In some rare cases, the SUV was shut down due to hybrid system issues. The tailgate is also opened unintentionally in some cases.

Safety Problems

  • Driver Assistance systems - In some rare cases, the collision avoidance system was disabled, limiting safety.

Should you buy the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450?

Over the years, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class has earned a reputation for offering class-leading luxury and all the latest features. With its well-equipped cabin and feature list, the GLS-Class is easily one of the best luxury SUVs money can buy. However, because of its complicated powertrain and technologies, reliability remains a concern. Multiple owners have reported issues with the hybrid system and other electrical malfunctions. The number of recalls is also concerning for the recent launch. Overall, if you’re in the market for a luxury SUV, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 is still one of the better options out there despite the reliability concerns. A thorough inspection is recommended when picking up a used SUV.
