Overview

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque luxury SUV is the right example of power and luxury in the compact crossover segment. The Evoque is probably a masterclass in its interior and exterior design. The Evoque is well known for the optional body style that it provides, which is unseen in this class, in the form of a convertible. The Evoque also showcases excellent off-road capacity with its Terrain systems and high ground clearance.

The Evoque is priced at $41,800 and comes in six trim levels. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine that is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard across all Evoque trim levels, and there is a good amount of optional items for each trim as well. The Evoque is fun to drive and handles well.

Buying Advice

The base SE trim balances cost and features. It offers luxury features like power adjustable leather seats and Multispoke alloy wheels as standard features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L engine that outputs 237 hp and has a torque output of 251 lb-ft. it is mated to a nine-speed transmission and has AWD as standard. The Evoque is an excellent handler, with sporty steering and precise control. It also shows a classy interior, just like the exterior. The Evoque also offers a decent performance with the base engine, whereas the optional engine found on the top two trims is quick and responsive. The Evoque does not, however, offer a good fuel economy that eats into its ranking against other SUVs.

The Evoque has a cramped rear seat and is low on cargo capacity as well. The car is quite expensive in this segment, and it has high ownership costs as well. There are a few cars however that go up against the Evoque. At a price of $41,800, the Evoque comes in six trims and faces competition from other similar luxury SUVs such as the 2018 Audi Q5, the 2018 Volvo XC60, and the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA Class.

We recommend

The 2018  Land Rover Evoque Landmark edition is the trim we recommend, for its balanced approach in terms of pricing and features offered. At $48,400, it is very well equipped against some of its rivals in the same price point and also comes with a lot of customizations for the interior.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Seating and Comfort

The interior of the 2108 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is just beautiful. It's very stylish, super elegant, and very premium. The quality is on point here, with well-finished surfaces, no panel gaps, and different trim surfaces that all come together to provide an exquisite experience. The controls are well-arranged, logically placed, easy to use, and have a robust feeling to them. The cabin is spacious, and the adjustability on offer ensures everyone will be comfortable on the inside.

Fashion is the Range Rover Evoque's interior's motto. Higher trims get wood inlays to increase the overall premium feel. The dial shifter is a nice touch, as it rises from the console when the car is started.

In terms of seating, the Evoque can seat 5 people. The front row of the Evoque is large with ample legroom and headroom for a comfortable long drive. The seats have loads of cushioning with excellent back support and bolstering. The perforated seats help with more comfort. In the rear, even though the seats are comfortable with good support levels, it's a different story, thanks to the cramped legroom and a tight headroom. Visibility is also compromised in the rear due to the headrests and the wide rear section panels. Ingress and egress are not the easiest, as the Evoque is a tall car and the roofline is on the lower side.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Dimensions and Weight

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is an elegant-looking compact crossover SUV. it is the in fact the most stunning and uniquely designed Land Rover, which has been a fashion icon since its launch in 2012. The overall design of the Evoque is sharp, with sleek lines running from the front to the rear. The front of the Evoque is graceful, with slim headlights between the black-out grille. The car has a tall but blunt nose, with a huge bumper. From the side, the tall body with short windows and a sloping roof design gives it a coupe-style look, with rounded wheel arches and big wheels.

The rear of the Evoque showcases a tall tail, with slim LED taillights that have some geometry going on with the internal lines and design and a dual exhaust setup that enhances the sporty look on this SUV. The Landmark Edition adds some exterior touches like a gray roof with 19-inch gray wheels and a grey badge. In terms of dimensions, the Evoque has a curb weight of 3865 lbs, with a length of 172 inches and a wheelbase of 104.8 inches. Safety
9.0/10

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has not been crash-tested nor safety rated from either the NHTSA or the IIHS. However, the Evoque's body structure has aged.  This SUV uses a unibody structure instead of a body on frame construction. The hood and the roof are made of aluminum, and the tailgate is a single piece made from a composite. Standard safety features on the Evoque include airbags, traction control, stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Other safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Parking sensors
  • Automatic high beams
  • Blindspot monitors
  • Surround-view camera system

Competition
7.0/10

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs 2018 Audi Q5

The 2018 Audi Q5 is an excellent choice against the Evoque. It gets a turbocharged engine, but has more power and torque output than the Evoque. It also has better performance times. The Audi Q5 also has a better braking distance. Both the cars have a similar fuel economy, but the Q5 is more efficient in the city. The Q5 and the Evoque both have excellent driving dynamics.

In the context of the interior, the Evoque's interiors are much better and more luxurious than the Q5's. However, the tech on the inside of the Q5 is more user-friendly and practical. The infotainment system on the Audi takes some getting used to. The Q5 also has received top safety ratings, whereas the Evoque has not been rated at all. In short, the Q5 is an understated car with a lot of potential. It is also the better car as a family car instead of the Evoque. The Q5 also benefits from lower ownership costs.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque vs 2018 Volvo XC60

The 2018 Volvo XC60 gets an update for the year 2018 in the form of a complete redesign and is now more handsome and graceful than before. It is one of those cars that manage to compete against the Evoque in a fashion sense. The XC60, like the Evoque, gets a turbo 2.0L engine with more power and torque than the Evoque. This, with the AWD on the XC60, has given the car very capable and precise driving dynamics which makes it a fun car to drive. The XC60 stops better than the Evoque as well, thanks to the better braking setup.

The XC60 has an appealing and attractive interior like the Evoque. The XC60 however weighs a lot more than the Evoque. The infotainment unit is easy to use like on the Evoque and comes with a ton of features. In the safety department, a top safety score with a long list of safety features makes the XC60 a safer car. Also, the XC60 has lower ownership costs.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is the ultimate definition of a compact luxury crossover SUV. The Evoque does output less performance on its base engine, but the optional engine is up to the rivals in terms of engagement, drivability, and performance. There is a compromise in the fuel efficiency department, as it's not the most fuel-efficient luxury crossover. However, once inside the Evoque, the materials, the finish, the fit, the roominess all engulf you in luxury until you hit the cramped rear seating.

With a strong infotainment system, loads of safety features, and eye-catchy styling, the Evoque does raise standards for other luxury SUVs in this segment. However, all this comes at an extra price over its rivals, putting it out of reach for so many customers out there. All in all, if pricing is not a concern, then the Evoque is a solid recommendation from us.

              Love it

Pros - Very comfortable, good visibility, great on rough roads, great in bad weather including snow; loads of good spec

Cons - Elec doors a bit eccentric when opening with key in pocket

Love it. But expensive to run - servicing and insurance costs high
