Overview

The Range Rover brand has been a huge success for the company globally. Especially in the States where the sales have been going strong for the past many years. That said, Land Rover introduced the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque in 2012 to capture the crossover market, and needless to say, it has been enjoying quite some popularity due to the style, the off-road capability, and the performance on offer.

Buying Advice

After going through all the features on offer, the base trim - Pure - makes the most sense as the long list of standard features satisfies all the requirements and ticks all boxes that one expects from a crossover at this price range. The trim can further be optioned out with the Climate Comfort Package that’ll help in the winters.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque range kicks off at $41,995, and this pricing puts it straight onto the crosshairs of some of the most popular luxury crossovers in the segment namely, the Audi Q5, the Acura RDX, and the BMW X3. All the crossovers provide a lot of luxury while also acing the performance game as well. Continue with the article to know how it performs in front of other giants in the segment.

The standard equipment list on the Evoque is pretty long and also poses a very lucrative offering, but if you want to add more features, Land Rover offers packages like the Adaptive Dynamic Package that adds adaptive suspension to the Dynamic trim. The Climate Comfort Package is also a popular option that adds features like heating for the steering wheel, seats, windshield, and washer jets. Other standalone features are parallel parking assist, 20-inch wheels, rear-seat entertainment system, and satellite and HD radio.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque comes powered by a turbocharged 2.0L Inline-4 that is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain produces a total of 240 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, which is channeled to all four wheels as standard. The engine has been critically praised for its punchiness and smooth nature along with the gearbox that always has the right cog ready whenever required.

The Range Rover Evoque does live up to the brand’s name in terms of the driving dynamics and the comfort on offer. Driving for miles over and over won’t be an issue in this at all. The cabin is impressively quiet though there is some wind noise that creeps in from near the A-pillars. The seating position is very impressive, but the same can’t be said for the rearwards visibility from the rear window. It is rather small, and the blind spots are huge, posing issues while maneuvering through the city.

The BMW X3 is the quickest among all the competitors despite being at a two-cylinder disadvantage when compared to the Acura RDX, completing the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds. This was, obviously, followed by the more powerful Acura, which was further followed by the Evoque. Audi’s lack of power was evident in how it accelerates, but that being said, it launches pretty well for the output.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The turbocharged 2.0L mill in the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque might not be the most powerful nor the quickest, but what it does well is it offers impressive fuel economy on the go. To cement this claim, the EPA has estimated 20 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway for a combined total of 23 MPG from its 18.5-gallon fuel tank.

The Evoque is as good as the others when it comes to fuel economy, with the BMW X3 returning an MPG more in the city. The race for the range boils down to how big the fuel tank on the respective crossovers are, and that said, the Audi Q5 is the one that can go the most miles on a single refuel as it offers a class-leading fuel tank of 19.8 gallons.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has a contemporary design that has a quality feel all around the cabin, be it on the door panels or on the dashboard. The dashboard has a very clean design, and the center of the dashboard has a very simple design with a very intuitive layout. The AC vents feel premium, and so does the dashboard’s upper surface. The center console houses the usual climate control settings along with the gear selector, cubby spaces, the center armrest, and driving mode buttons.

The seats on the Evoque are the main talking point in the interior due to the soft cushion and the leather upholstery that adds a lot of posh. The same quality and comfort is carried on to the rear seats as well, with the soft leather and the contrast stitching. Talking of practicality, the seats offer six-way power-adjustability to the driver and four-way power-adjustability to the passenger. Opting for the Climate Comfort package adds heated seats to the front occupants.

The BMW X3 has the most headroom, while the Evoque takes the lead in terms of legroom. However, the Acura RDX has the roomiest cabin of all due to the impressive shoulder room it carries in both rows of seating. The Evoque’s roomy cabin does eat up into the cargo space on offer, which remains at just 20 cubic feet. That said, some of the highlighting interior features are:

  • Power liftgate
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Driver-selectable drive modes
  • Power front seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Leather upholstery

How intuitive is the infotainment unit?

The 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque bundles a touchscreen interface that also comes with Bluetooth for phone connectivity and audio streaming. This system also gets a USB/iPod interface along with a CD player and AM/FM radio. The music department is taken care of by an 11-speaker sound system that doesn’t distort the music even at higher volumes and keeps the tones in check.

This system can be upgraded in the Pure trim with a Premium package that will add a navigation system, a 17-speaker surround-sound audio system, voice controls, and a 10-CD changer. Also available as options are satellite and HD radio and a rear-seat entertainment option for the rear occupants to enjoy. That said, some of the highlighting features are:

  • 11-speaker sound system with a CD player
  • Touchscreen electronics interface
  • Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity
  • CD player
  • Auxiliary audio jack and two USB audio jacks
  • Navigation system
  • Voice controls
  • 17-speaker surround-sound audio system
  • 10-CD changer
  • Optional satellite and HD radio
  • Optional rear-seat entertainment system

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque has a very distinctive design which makes it stand apart from the other crossovers in the market. To personify, it looks more of a sophisticated lady in high heels at a casual party. The LED lights make a very sleek and sexy combo with the Land Rover front grille design and big air intakes in the front bumpers. The big hood is muscular and adds to the rugged appeal.

From the side, the Evoque looks very compact and has a very flat roof with a blacked-out D-pillar, making the roof appear as if it's floating - looks beautiful nonetheless. The big alloys do make a difference along with the body cladding and simple lines. The rear also has a distinctive appeal to it with very different taillights and a big rear bumper that houses the exhaust pipe.

Safety
8.0/10

The Evoque’s chassis has been tweaked to remain compact and still be rigid to aid in offroading.
