Renegade is Jeep’s most affordable and compact car yet, placed below the Jeep Compass. 2023 Renegade gets an upgraded interior, switching the previously offered 7-inch infotainment system to a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen display. Given its durability and decent handling, it can be a good choice for first-time buyers. The car goes head to head against the Kia Soul and the Mazda CX-30; however its price tag of $26,312 makes it a bit expensive against its competitors.

With all its praise, Renegade has a poor reputation in terms of reliability and stands on the expensive side of operation costs in its class. It costs around $10,083 in terms of maintenance and repairs for the first 10 years. Not to mention its poor fuel economy. Also, the reliability rating stands at 80 out of 100 which is average at best. So here we have listed some common problems in all the Jeep Renegades variants and whether you should buy the upcoming 2023 Jeep Renegade or not.

The following are some of the common issues in previous model years of Jeep Renegade.

Safety Complaints

  • Air Bags - The airbag warning lights keep turning on and off on a previous MY Renegade which was involved in an accident but the airbags failed to deploy. The car was running and had an occupied passenger seat yet there was no deployment. The owner also reported that the investigation report was not shared with the owner and was kept as company property.
  • Engine Cooling - One person detected an odor coming from the air vents. The owner complained that the engine was burning hot because the fan failed to cool off the engine.

Electrical Issues

  • Warning Lights - A Renegade Trailhawk owner complained that the warning lights came on for headlights, taillights, blinkers, daytime lights, Tag lights, parking lights, and backup lights indicating that they were not functioning. The owner got out of the car to check only to find out that all of the lights were functioning properly.

Engine and Mechanical Complaints

  • Engine - At around 41,800 miles, the engine started vibrating and produced noises. After taking the vehicle to the dealership, it was found that the passenger-side engine mount was defective.
  • Radiator - The radiator fans keep on turning off resulting in overheating. The radiator fans have to be manually spun in order to turn them on. The fans were replaced 3 to 4 times. The owner reported that a fan only lasted for 4 months to 8 months.

Interior Problems

  • Seats - The positional control on the passenger side power seat started malfunctioning. The issue was not solved even after multiple examinations.
  • Seat Belt - The seat belt warning lights kept turning on despite the belts being on. On examination, it was found that the seat belt switch was defective.
