The Jeep Renegade appeal to those looking for a budget and pocket-sized Jeep that won’t break any sweat while tackling some dirt roads. Unlike other FCA vehicles, the Jeep Renegade has been less prone to run into issues and the latest 2020 model justifies it. The NHTSA recorded a total of 18 complaints and 2 recalls for the 2020 Renegade to date. Among the few complaints, most of the reports were regarding the powertrain. The Renegade is priced at $23,870 for its base trim. It competes against the Honda HR-V, the Ford EcoSport, and the Mazda CX-3 in the segment.
Jeep Renegade user complaints and problems
Engine problems
- Pressure Control Valve(PCV) malfunction: A few owners complained that the PCV in their vehicle’s engine malfunctioned. The pressure control valve was working only in a single direction which might have caused a low idle rpm and inadequate vacuum pressure in the braking system.
- Engine stalling and going into limp mode: Few models of the 2020 Renegade faced these problems. In a couple of cases, the engine stalled without any warning but the owner was able to start the engine later. In some cases, the engine failed to start and the vehicle had to be towed. An isolated incident occurred where the engine went into limp mode suddenly while the owner was driving the vehicle.
- Transmission slipping: A single complaint regarding this problem stated that while driving, the vehicle was jerking but there was no warning light illuminated. The owner was a mechanic and upon further inspection, the transmission was found to be slipping.
Safety problems
- Airbag failure and seat belt failure: A single complaint was registered that mentioned that during a collision, both the driver and the front passenger were injured severely since the airbags failed to deploy. In another instance, the seatbelts failed to stop the driver from hitting the dashboard during a mild collision.

Should you buy a used Jeep Renegade?
In a word, definitely. The Jeep Renegade is one of the best crossovers in the segment for budget-oriented buyers who also want to have a taste of off-roading too. Over the past couple of years, the Renegade has faced a few issues regarding its powertrains but the number of the complaints is not substantial and the brand seems to have fixed them on the current model. Going for a used model would require the usual getting-to-know the vehicle stuff but models older than the 2018 model year are not recommended.
