The wheel-turning is not subtle like in a Tesla, you really have to grab the wheel hard and take good control over it. Also, the acceleration from a stop is terrible. The 2022 Jeep Renegade is a breath of fresh air in the subcompact crossover SUV segment if your commute includes wading through rivers, driving over rocks, and a bit of slush. But it has not been the most dependable product in recent years due to poor reliability ratings and after-sales service.

Jeep has festooned the 2022 Renegade with just enough changes to call it a new model year but you would have to be blind to believe it is anything new. We still love it for its strengths - great ride quality, good off-road ability, and decent safety standards. Its competition has moved on a lot as you can see with the Honda HR-V, the Mazda CX-30, and the Ford Escape. One can also call the Jeep a bit pricey as it starts at MSRP $25,760. Let us find out more about Jeep Renegade's problems in this article.

2022 Jeep Renegade User Complaints and Problems

Jeep has consistently ranked among the brands that are the least reliable and introducing new technology such as a turbocharged 1.3 L four-cylinder engine does make this car subject to more scrutiny in terms of reliability. Being an entry-level car, this has to be the one that must be easy to maintain. Only then, buyers will trust the Jeep brand and aspire to own their more expensive products. What we find is that the reputation of this particular vehicle is tainted with a lot of consumer complaints. Let us take a look at some of the latest Jeep Renegade complaints below.

Mechanical problems:

  1. According to one owner, the car consumes a lot of oil. The dealership refuses to check whether there is a problem. The same owner has reported that the transmission makes some noise when shifting from first to second. The dealership responded with a similarly lethargic attitude when addressing this problem as well.

Electrical system problems:

  1. One car had a whole host of problems with the electrical system. The owner observed dashboard lights suddenly starting to blink and these included warnings for seatbelts, airbags, and the engine. The car then shifted to neutral by itself and forced the owner to pull over. The dealership said that there was no trouble found but the owner had faced a lot of issues.
  2. Other owners have also reported incidents of the car needing to be pulled over and the electrical system shutting down while driving. The electrical system seems to be a problem area for a lot of people as some systems shut down left, right, and center. Many owners have reported problems with the forward collision warning as well.

Safety problems:

  1. One extremely dissatisfied owner had several complaints associated with the forward collision warning as well as the four-wheel-drive system on a Jeep Renegade. The car had displayed a forward collision warning, which then went off and the owner was greeted by a 4x4 failure warning on the dash. Although the car was brand-new, the tie rods had to be changed and the dealership failed to provide any replacement car, causing quite a bit of inconvenience.
  2. One more owner had reported that another safety feature, known as the ‘quick steer’ function in the vehicle is very dangerous. When the driver tried this feature, the car started controlling the steering wheel and brakes by itself. However, the car then refused to respond to manual inputs and posed a serious threat to safety.

The 2022 Jeep Renegade has not reported any complaints yet as it has just been introduced in the market. Looking at the 2021 model car gives us a more accurate picture of what the customer complaints have been like. One can observe that there are many complaints regarding the electrical system in the car as well as the active safety systems. Jeep Renegade battery problems were also common a while ago and could be the cause for some of these issues.

2022 Jeep Renegade Recalls

The American manufacturer has tried to keep recalls down to a bare minimum and hence they haven’t fixed most of the issues owners have faced. Although we can see that some safety features on the car need a redesign before they cause an accident, we see that no attempt has been made regarding the same. The 2022 model has not been part of any recalls yet and the same applies to the 2021 model. The last recorded recalls are from 2020 and they are explained below.

With an unreliable car and a brand that is unresponsive, owners are in for a hard time with the Renegade. Going back and looking at the complaints history of this particular car, one finds that even during the years that it was extremely unreliable and reported more than 400 complaints, the brand has only issued a total of three recalls. We have to believe that Jeep is unflustered by just how problematic the car is.

Which model year of the Jeep Renegade should you avoid?

The current generation of the Jeep Renegade has been on sale for a long while and this means it has had a lot of time to sort out its problems. While this has worked to an extent, the car still has many problems left. If you’re considering buying one used, then it would probably be a bad idea because several issues loom large over this subcompact SUV. The attitude from dealerships concerning some of the issues is also disheartening.

Should you buy the 2022 Jeep Renegade?

The Jeep Renegade presents a unique package that has its quirks and high points but is one of the most outdated cars from the brand right now. Its low-quality interior materials and bad reliability ratings don’t exactly help it sell more units either. At its price point, it is a decent car because of its ruggedness and off-road capabilities. But other than these two obvious strengths, it does not have enough appeal to pick it over its rivals.
