I've had 6 Jeep Grand Cherokees so when my last one had the head gasket go at just over 200,000 I bought a certified preowned 2017 without thinking twice. My bad. This car is so badly designed that after two weeks I am looking for another car. For one thing, the hum of theRead More

... that issue is still not resolved. We have also taken it in 7 times for suspension issues and it is still not resolved. We have gone through two axle seal repairs, a leaking radiator, and unresolved clicking noises in the dash that cannot be found. I have owned 5 other jeeps and all of them were good. This one is awful. Even jeep customer care is a joke. No sense ofRead More

... place to be stalled. It took me half a minute to get the Jeep started again. I thought it was a fluke. It wasn't. I started to turn off the auto engine shut every time I got in the car (there is a button for this) but sometimes I forget and it's so annoying. I am not the only one that hates this feature, there are actually videos on Youtube to teach you how to disable this feature.Read More

One of the most iconic cars in the midsize SUV segment is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. But in reality, this iconic status is pretty much the only thing the car has going for itself. Buyers generally perceive this car as an unreliable one and they cannot be blamed because it has reported 201 complaints and a total of 4 recalls this year alone. Its off-roading capabilities and luxury credentials are noteworthy but these are things you cannot enjoy if the car is always in the garage. Prices start at an MSRP of $31,332 without options and there are numerous trim levels offered as well. The competition consists of cars like the Nissan Murano, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Ford Edge. Read on to find out how Jeep Grand Cherokee problems have affected its owners in this particular year.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  1. Multiple owners have also had Jeep Grand Cherokee engine problems in which it stalls and shuts down without any warning. Sometimes the issues are electrical, and sometimes they are mechanical but the fact that too many owners have faced such issues is worrying.
  2. There have been many owners who have reported engine failures in this car and the most disturbing fact is that most of them are regarding different issues. From issues ranging from coding issues, lubrication, starter issues, and emission system problems, the complaints are numerous.
  3. Apart from these engine problems, there are multiple miscommunications with the body control module and the power transfer unit malfunctions. This would also result in multiple problems associated with the transmission, the steering as well as the four-wheel-drive system.
  4. The air suspension in this car also overheats and causes a clunking noise coming from underneath. The repairs are very expensive.
  5. The steering system in this car has a major fault known as the Jeep death wobble. This causes the car to go into a state of oscillation after it has been disturbed by a small bump and steering inputs do not work in this situation. The steering also suffers from several cases in which it was completely locked and drivers could not give it any input.
  6. The transmission also has a design fault in which, even while being shifted to Park, it can roll down the slope.

Electrical system problems:

  1. One of the main problems with this car is when the complaints start coming, there are multiple areas such as the loss of the power steering assist, traction control, lane assist, emergency brake, backup assist, airbags, etc stop functioning one by one or a combination of the above. This is because the fault is from the Jeep body control module itself which oversees many functions.
  2. The auto start-stop function of this car has also generated a lot of complaints. Sometimes the dealership says that the issue was with the battery and it gets replaced. Even after this was repaired, the cars are never fully fixed and the owners continued to have reliability problems.
  3. Electrical problems have also resulted in the front jump post or other components melting and causing fire hazards in the car.
  4. The infotainment system has been known to fail according to several owners. The touch controls operate without input in this instance and the instrument cluster flashes without warning. Sometimes the backup camera comes on randomly and radio stations can change without any input. Sometimes the power windows go up and down in this situation as well.
  5. In many cases, the service shifter warning light comes on. After the software flash at the dealership, the car requires an electronic shift module replacement or reports a complete engine failure.
  6. Many people have had dead batteries due to a wide range of reasons and most of the time, they are not replaced under warranty.
  7. Cruise control is known to be another problem area that does not have an immediate fix. And the vehicle speed control settings are erratic in general.

Interior problems:

  1. There have been only small complaints regarding the Jeep Grand Cherokee interiors. These include the seats not moving to allow adjustment and the belts not buckling properly. In some cases, owners have also reported inadvertent operation of the buttons but that is a driver error.
  2. There is also the widespread problem of the passenger side front seat active headrest braking and sometimes deploying itself. The automatic seat heating function has also produced a few casualties.

Safety problems:

  1. In many cases, the airbags do not deploy even been there are life-threatening accidents. Many owners have also reported airbag warning lights coming on as well.
  2. The forward collision warning in this has also generated a lot of complaints. It brakes suddenly even when there is nothing in front and can be the cause of rear-end collisions. The same lane departure warning as well, and inadvertent application of these features can cause serious injuries.

Exterior problems:

  1. There have been a few complaints about headlights seals leaking and condensation building up, which causes electrical wires to corrode.
  2. The paint of the car has multiple quality issues including peeling.
  3. Many owners have also reported that the sunroof, windshield, etc. are prone to explosions. This happens even when there is no apparent impact.

Should you buy the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a car that has been around for quite a while and the manufacturer has had enough time to fix its problems. Despite all this time, however, it still reports a lot of issues that do not have an immediate solution. With failures being catastrophic and expensive, we cannot recommend this car to you at all. Instead, we would ask you to look at the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe.
