... day one it had electrical issues. ( Thank God it still had factory warranty left). The AC unit had to be replaced. The fuel gauge regulator was not working and even though I would fill up the take with gas the cheap digital screen said it was empty. They had to take the tank off and replace the sensor. The display screen would black out here and there. The keyRead More

... 2018. I received a call, and we made a weekend out of it, to drive the 6 hours to Odessa, to pick up my vehicle...again. They had replaced the transmission, because it was fried, and informed us that there's no way we could've known what the problem was, there is no dipstick, and no check engine light that came on. That was on January 5, 2019, that we picked up the vehicle. It is now January 10, 2019, (only 5 days after we just gotRead More

The Hyundai Tucson stands as the best-selling crossover from the South Korean brand despite facing fierce competition in its class. Vehicles from Hyundai rank well in the market in terms of reliability and the Hyundai Tucson lives up to the reputation as well. The 2015 Tucson has faced 116 complaints so far along with a single recall. The recall is regarding a fire in the engine compartment resulting from a faulty ABS module. Coming to the complaints, the powertrain department saw the maximum issues followed by the electrical system and braking system. Despite the powertrain problems, the brand hasn't issued any recall yet. In the segment, the 2015 Hyundai Tucson competes with the Subaru Forester, the Chevrolet Equinox, and the Kia Sportage.

Hyundai Tucson user complaints and problems

Engine problems

  • Failure to start and power loss: There have been numerous complaints mentioning these problems. For several owners, their vehicles’ engines refused to start suddenly despite all the electronics and the battery being perfectly healthy. The power loss problem affected more owners and the failures put the occupants at risk.
  • Engine seizure: A lot of owners also report engine seizures on their vehicles. The affected vehicles’ engines seized all of a sudden and as a symptom, there was sputtering along with loss of power. As a remedy, the damaged engines were replaced. In a few cases, the owners further mentioned that there were metal shavings on the oil pan indicating excessive wear and tear inside the engine resulting in the failures.
  • Engine blowing out: Apart from the engine seizures and the power loss problems, plenty of owners also complain about blown engines. Despite being a serious issue, several models were hit by it and the cases happened suddenly while driving. In several instances, the blow-up resulted in the occupants getting stranded on the road.

Safety problems

  • Vehicle fire: There are several reports from owners complaining about sudden vehicle fires. The owners state in their reports that while driving, the fire started without any warning and quickly spread throughout the vehicles, permanently damaging them. In most cases, the reasons for the fires were not determined. In some cases, the fires started while the vehicles were parked.

ABS Unit May Cause Engine Compartment Fire

An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS multi-fuse, as necessary, free of charge. Interim notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed on March 28, 2022. A second notice will be mailed once remedy parts become available.

Should you buy a used Hyundai Tucson?

The Hyundai Tucson is a strong option in its class with enough pros to make it one of the most preferable ones as well. It also impresses with its striking exterior design, extensive warranty coverage, and a set of comfortable front seats to make long journeys a blissful experience for solo drivers. However, don’t let the appeals blind you since the Tucson has experienced some fatal issues such as fires while being driven. Apart from that, numerous owners have faced serious issues with powertrains but it is surprising to see the brand not issuing a single recall to address the problems. Going for a used example isn’t recommended by us. Alternatively, you can opt for the Kia Sportage since it has a slightly better reliability department than the Tucson, or the Subaru Forester if you manage to find a fault-free example.
