Had my 2020 x5 x40i for 3 months, been Pacific BMW 3 times to reprogram wifi and cell phone communication. After the 3rd visit they fixed it, now it's out again, I will not fix it again, I realize the x5 technology is very faulty, so I'll just drive it like an old car. Unfortunately I bought it instead of leasing so I'm stuck. I traded in a 2018 audi Q5 with excellent technology, one ofRead More

The paramount reliability of midsize SUVs is one of the prime reasons for loyal BMW users who prefer the X5 over its competitors like the Audi Q8 and the Porsche Cayenne in the respective segment. Available with a base price of $60,600 the X5 is expected to surpass its rivals based on price, reliability, and quality.

Thanks to the global reputation of the vehicle in 2020, allowing the brand sold 278,732 vehicles, increasing the sales revenue up to 20.8% from that of the previous year. However, a significant percentage of automobile reviewers expected the profit margin of the brand to hit far beyond in the upcoming year, but the car’s recall rate of 9 followed by 13 complaints lodged on the NHTSA website did put the reliability of the vehicle under significant threat. The car’s problematic seat belt retractor issue was another serious issue that the brand owners had to consider seriously.

We’ll take a look through those concerns and issues that somehow knocked the market reputation of X7 in the respective year.

Electrical Issues

  • Rear back warning indicator stops working

Rear back warning indicator lights stop indicating alerts when an object or vehicle comes too close at the rear back of the vehicle. Such instances may trigger accidents when the car warning indicator stops working and does not give any alert if any vehicle is nearby. These issues are common when the electrical unit connected with the vehicle's crash avoidance feature stops working, due to any malfunction in either of these two components. Such problems should be identified and repaired soon.

  • Issue with the automatic brakes

Auto braking system in X7 malfunctions whenever there is a requirement to engage the braking system to avoid a forward crash. Such issues may lead the car to ram any object, vehicle, or person in the front by preventing the car to control its speed. Such issues show up when the faulty adaptive cruise and speed control sensors malfunction, henceforth they should be repaired and replaced with new ones.

  • Rear cross-traffic warning sensors stop working

A significant number of BMW X5 owners have found issues with the rear cross-traffic warning system that often stops working normally. Usually, the purpose of the feature is to initiate a warning when the car’s rear back portion comes close to any object, car, or human being by sensing traffic nearby. When the rear cross-traffic alert sensors malfunction the vehicle stops giving alerts compelling the driver to overlook the rear cross-traffic movement if there’s any. During such situations, if the vehicle comes any close to any object or person, inadequate rear traffic alert might compel the driver to hit the object, vehicle, or passerby coming close. Such things can trigger an accident, therefore the dealers should find a suitable way to repair and refix the issue.

Structural Problems

  • Issues with the auto-dimming lights

On multiple occasions, the auto-dimming lights equipped in the digital instrument panel usually stop responding normally. The main purpose of implementing dim lights in the section is to add intelligent ambient lighting features when the car is moving. Faulty sensors failing the ambient lights to interpret the right lighting pattern for the instrument panel might not switch on the instrument panel lights when it is actually needed. Instead, the lights might automatically turn on when they’re not required actually. This kind of issue should be inspected by the dealers and should be repaired soon.

Safety Problems

  • Seat belt issue

Faulty seatbelt retractors are a common problem in the X5s. User complaint includes the seat belt deny to attach whenever the passengers are seated and attach the belts. Such issues and concerns should be treated under safety issues and the dealers should find a way to repair those faulty retractors or if possible get in replaced with newer ones.

Should You Buy a 2020 BMW X5?

The X5 from BMW is a smart pick for those who’re planning to purchase SUVs. the vehicle’s popularity in the global market is something that can’t be denied. Though the car’s reliability questions were raised due to the faulty electrical sensors affecting the speed control, and braking assistance of the vehicle apart from the faulty seat belt retractor issue.

However, the brand proved every speculation to be wrong that was about to prove the reliability of its competitor brands by capitalizing on these issues. Instead, BMW issued a recall and asked the dealers to replace all those issues that were found in the vehicle to revive its brand reputation. The revived 2020 BMW X5 models which were free from every problem it met earlier, finally became available once again for resale at a decent price tag. If someone is planning to buy a used X5, that's free from every issue it had before, we don’t find any reason for the buyer to hold the thought of purchasing the vehicle at all!
