Overview

The 2022 model year will mark the end of the road for the Acura NSX and Acura couldn't have come up with a better way to bid adieu to this icon. For 2022, the NSX will be offered exclusively wearing the Type S moniker. That implies a twin-turbo V6 assisted by three hybrid motors, pushing the combined output to 600 hp and 492 lb-ft torque. Apart from this, the front and rear fascias have been refreshed and only 300 examples will be available for sale in the U.S.

The 2022 NSX Type S has a sticker price of $169,500. The boosted power helps the 2022 NSX Type S complete the 0-60 MPH run in just 2.5 seconds, which is 0.6 seconds quicker than the outgoing model. Although the exact MPG figures are not out yet, this may slightly affect the fuel economy. The NSX's interior gets mixed reviews for its quality and clunky infotainment system but it is comfortable. SIt competes with the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Nissan GT-R, and the Audi R8

Buying Advice

The NSX Type S is the only trim available. If you want to make the car reach its fullest potential, upgrade to the Lightweight Package that reduces the car's weight by 58 pounds and adds a carbon-fiber interior package and engine cover, and carbon-ceramic brakes. All these upgrades cost up to $13,000 and it is the most expensive package offered by Acura for the NSX.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Clever is a word that comes up repeatedly in talk about the NSX- Edmunds

The 2022 Acura NSX is a perplexing everyday hybrid supercar. The improved version of the second generation NSX takes the fight to brands like McLaren and Porsche in the junior supercar sector. The NSX name may resonate because the earlier generation of this model launched back in 1989 has such a profound effect on its sector. It's hard to believe that it's been on sale for the past five years and the NSX nameplate is going to die.

Fo the U.S., Acura announced that only 300 units will be manufactured and sold. Hence, there will be a huge waitlist and demand on the 2022 NSX. As for ownership costs, get ready to dig a deep hole in your pockets as the NSX is going to be a high-maintenance car. But, compared to brands like McLaren, Porsche, Audi, etc., the NSX's running costs may be less. In terms of reliability, Honda has earned enough reputation to proclaim itself a reliable brand.

Many high-performance sports cars offer carbon-fiber upgrades and the Acura NSX is no different- Carbuzz

The 2022 Acura NSX will be offered exclusively in the Type S trim. It has a base selling price of $169,500 whereas a fully-loaded NSX Type S can reach up to $209,000. This price excludes a handling/destination charge of $1,995. However, as this is the last year of the NSX supercar, only 350 units will be produced in total. Of them, 300 models will be reserved for the U.S. alone.

The 2022 NSX Type S will have several enhancements over the outgoing model, like new front and rear fascias, new split 5-spoke wheels, Pirelli P-Zero tires, a standard carbon-fiber roof, and a new Gotham Gray Matte Metallic color option. Besides this, Acura also offers many carbon-fiber upgrades to this high-performance supercar. Some of them include a $2,500 carbon-fiber engine cover and a roof.

Also, carbon-ceramic brakes with red brake calipers are available for $9,900.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Hybrid vehicles are more efficient in stop-and-go city traffic than their gasoline-only rivals, and the NSX is no different- CarAndDriver

EPA has not rated the 2022 Acura NSX at the time of this writing but the outgoing model is mechanically similar to the 2022 model. Hence, we are considering the fuel economy of the outgoing model. The fuel estimates are 21 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on a highway, and combined mileage of 21 MPG.

But considering how it makes more power than the outgoing model, expect a slightly slashed efficiency from this supercar. The NSX is fitted with a 15.6-gallon fuel tank and drinks only premium unleaded fuel. It can drive up to 328 miles in both city and highway scenarios, which is pretty decent for a supercar.

The hybrid powertrain helps the NSX stand out in this area. The Audi R8's fuel economy is not appreciable but its large fuel tank allows it to achieve 372 miles of combined driving range. The fuel economy of the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911 Turbo is almost similar but the latter's small tank results in a lesser range than the GT-R.

Interior
7.4/10

Of course, there are some downsides, including the dated cabin and infotainment system- CarAndDriver

The Acura NSX's interior gets attractive-looking design elements all over with a functional dashboard. The overall cabin quality is fine but a lot of people have complained about the NSX's cabin not being at par with the likes of other cars in the same genre. The steering wheel is ergonomic perfection. The thumb slots are smooth and very comfortable and on the backside, it's contoured for four fingers to grip it.

The seats are dressed in high-quality leather and Alcantara and you will spot Type S logos embroidered on the seats. The seats are snug but not too well-bolstered. They offer superb lumbar support and the armrests are well-positioned. There's also a new Alcantara headliner. Both the seats have power adjustability and heated functions. In terms of passenger space,  the head and legroom are sufficient for grown adults.

The only downside int eh NSX's cabin is the outdated infotainment system. It's the same infotainment system tt was present in the last generation Civic. The 7-inch touchscreen is uninspiring and there's no volume knob. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivities are offered as standard equipment. The graphics are dull but the 9-speaker sound system has decent sound quality.

When it comes to practicality though, the NSX does seem to disappoint. It only has about 4.4 cu-ft of boot space, which is well below average. The Nissan GT-R does take the edge in the competition, with the two extra seats at the back, even though they might not be very practical for people to sit in. Still, they are there if you need them for something, maybe for keeping your shopping or groceries. Some other interior features are:

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • 4-way power front seats with heated functionality
  • Premium leather & Alcantara seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Ambient lighting

Looking every bit the supercar it is, the Acura NSX doesn’t just move through the air, it scythes- Kelly Blue Book

The Acura NSX has always had a pretty unique and good-looking exterior design, which is definitely a head-turner in most scenarios. For 2022, Acura has refreshed the front and rear fascias of the NSX. The black mesh beak grille design in the front has been swapped out with a lot more angular and aggressive look. The nose of the car is lower and wider than before. The front splitter is also redesigned for better aerodynamics but you still get the Jewel-eye LED headlights as standard.

The Acura badge has been moved down below the hood and they have offered a black Acura badge for the very first time, believe it or not. Moving to the side profile, you will notice the Type S badging which is the biggest indicator that this car is any different from before. It also gets new 19-inch 5-spoke wheels exclusive to the Type S, wrapped around Pirelli P-Zero tires. At the back, the biggest difference is the diffuser, which is now finished in carbon fiber. You can also opt for the carbon-fiber decklid spoiler and roof panel.

The low ground clearance of the NSX increases its potential for speed. The short wheelbase of the Porsche 911 Turbo helps it to burn out extremely quickly while accelerating. The Nissan GT-R is a bit longer than its rivals. Therefore, taking it at tight parking spots can be challenging. On this front, buyers of the Audi R8 won't be in any trouble as it is the shortest car here. Some other cool exterior highlights are:

  • LED headlights, DRLs & taillights
  • Power-folding, heated exterior mirrors
  • Aluminum door handles
  • Quad exhaust tips
  • Rear lip spoiler
  • 19/20-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels

Safety
8.0/10

Unfortunately, advanced driver-assist technologies aren't available- Carbuzz

Owing to its supercar stature and high price tag, NHTSA and IIHS haven't conducted any crash tests on the Acura NSX and they never will. Hence, it is a bit difficult to judge the safety aspect of the car. its body structure consists of highly-rigid aluminum and high-strength steel. These materials, especially aluminum can absorb the maximum amount of collision energy to keep the occupants safe.

Moreover, the NSX also comes with a suite of seven airbags to protect the driver and the passenger from serious injuries. Don't expect advanced driver-assist technologies in this car. Although the NSX should have adequate post-protection features, there is not much in the name of pre-crash prevention. The only safety features available are mentioned below:

  • Rearview camera
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Auto high-beam assist
  • Traction & stability control

2022 Acura NSX vs 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo

Although the NSX might be the finest offering from Acura, it is still no match for the legendary Porsche 911 Turbo. The 911 Turbo is quite safely one of the best sports cars available in the market right now. Its fuel economy is less but that would rarely be a priority for buyers. Compared to the NSX, it has a laudable build quality and an opulent interior. It is also open to a number of customization options. The way it drives and handles, there are hardly any cars that could match the 911 Turbo.

2022 Acura NSX vs 2022 Audi R8

The Audi R8 is another serious contender to the NSX but with a much lower price tag. With a V10 under the hood, there are very few cars that could match the engine orchestra and the seamless power delivery from what you get in the Audi R8. Unlike the NSX, the R8's infotainment system is user-friendly and the cabin also feels luxurious. Both the cars offer dynamic handling and incredible performance but we think the R8 is a much better alternative to the NSX.

 2022 Acura NSX vs 2022 Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R is nearly 55 grand cheaper than the NSX, making it one of the affordable supercars in the segment. Both these cars offer rocket-like acceleration and unremarkable driving dynamics. However, the GT-R is a bit ahead when it comes to trunk space and seating capacity, though the rear seats are cramped. On the other hand, the NSX's hybrid powertrain delivers better fuel economy and it also delivers a better ride quality on broken pavements than the GT-R.

Final Verdict

The 2022 model year will be the last year for the legend of a supercar the NSX is. Accordingly, Acura is going all out to make sure the icon is remembered long after it's gone and there could not have been a better way to do so. The 2022 NSX sure offers a lot to look forward to. Right from the refreshed front and rear fascia designs to the updated 600 hp V6, the NSX definitely looks like a promising possession to add to your collection.
