... outstanding. We have experienced zero mechanical issues and the paint is still pristine. The gas milage is as advertised. The technology should be gutted from the car (along with any/all Volvo senior leaders that support it) because the car is so much better than the tech you have to interface with... ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// This review comes after about 6 weeks of use. The 2022 Volvo S90 is a luxury sedan that seamlessly and effortlessly blends stately presence with understated power and comfort. It is the flagship sedan from the Swedish brand and offers serious competition to rivals like the 2022 Audi A6, the 2022 BMW 5-Series, the 2022 Cadillac CT-5, and the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The sculpted bodywork with aesthetically perfect proportions, sleek headlights, and diamond-cut wheels lend a serene, professional touch to the car's character. Step inside, and there is a beautifully laid-out interior that prioritizes soft colors and glass all-round to maximize light and a sense of airiness in the cabin. A 9-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard and is the focal point for all vehicle settings, multimedia, and navigation. The base variant hides a mild hybrid supercharged and turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine under the hood that delivers 295 horsepower. The S90 is also offered as a plug-in hybrid model named T8 that adds an electric motor to the powertrain to boost power output by 145 horsepower and increase fuel efficiency.

2022 Volvo S90User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Hesitancy in reversing - Multiple owners reported experiencing an erratic reversing motion or intermittent locking of the rear wheel when backing up. There was a clunking noise on every partial rotation of the wheel, and clutch jerks or slips were also noticeable.

Exterior Problems

  • Sunroof - Few owners reported being unable to close the panoramic sunroof using the remote key or the keyless door handle. The issue occurred after an overall software update, and the instruction was to re-calibrate the sunroof module.
  • Rearview mirror - Some owners complained that the outside rearview mirror did not return to the default position after disengaging the reverse gear. An error in the memory functionality was the reason, and a software update resolved the issue.

Electrical Problems

  • Battery issues - Complainants raised issues like occasional failure of the vehicle to start or unlock the doors and a malfunctioning Start/Stop button. The reason for most of these was a weak or depleted battery.
  • Climate control - Several owners mentioned that the climate control system tended to malfunction and behave erratically - blowing hot or cold air unexpectedly and irregularly.
  • Alarm system - Few reported cases where the 'security mode' of the alarm system unexpectedly forced all the car windows to open and unlocked the doors based on a false warning.

Miscellaneous Problems

  • Erroneous messages - Few owners complained about receiving a faulty notification instructing them to disconnect the charging cable when the vehicle was free from electrical attachments. The root cause was a software error in the onboard charger.

Loss of Drive Power

In the Plug-In Hybrid S90 sedans, an error in the software logic could cause the estimated cooling flow on the electrical drive cooling circuit to diminish and go to zero. The issue usually occurs when the system requests maximum cooling. As a result, the Inverter Generator Module will wrongly adjust the available torque settings, and the combustion engine will fail to start. The vehicle will revert to pure electric propulsion, and the partial loss of drive power could destabilize the vehicle, increasing the likelihood of an accident.

Dealers will correct the issue in the Electronic Control Module software at no additional cost.

Should you buy the 2022 Volvo S90?

If you are in the market for a full-size luxury sedan that is quiet, refined, and elegantly designed, then the 2022 Volvo S90 is a fantastic choice. The simplistic exterior design exudes charm and is pleasing to the eyes of onlookers without being overbearing. The opulent cabin is adorned with the best of Swedish luxury and has all the latest technological gadgets that one would expect in a flagship sedan. It is an excellent alternative to the German saloons that dominate this category and offers a remarkable driving and traveling experience even in its base model. State-of-the-art safety systems, the finest materials for the interiors, configurable drivetrains, and an attractive sticker price make this an option that is hard to resist. To add more, the brand ensures premium craftsmanship that guarantees fuss-free build quality and reliability.
