The Toyota Tacoma has been a staple in the mid-size pickup truck segment since its launch back in 1995. The 2022 Tacoma stands out in the segment for its user-friendly and easy-to-use infotainment system and abundance of safety features while some high-end trims offer exceptional off-roading capabilities. But it may not be enough in an overcrowded segment. So here we discuss in detail whether you should buy the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab or not and take a look at some of its problems and recalls.
2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab User Complaints and Problems
Engine and Mechanical Problems
- Brakes - An owner complained that when starting the truck, especially in the morning, the brake pedal would be very mushy and goes very near the floor. When driving and having to brake it sometimes goes down a little too far. Although the dealer said that it was normal, the owner does not feel it is safe.
- Powertrain - An owner states that while pressing on the accelerator pedal during a corner exit there was no response from the engine. The vehicle was taken to the dealership but they could not replicate the problem.
Safety Problems
- Airbags - An owner complained that the truck was rear-ended by a car going 45 MPH at a stop light. The airbag sensor went on but the airbag did not deploy. Also, both passenger and driver seatbelts did not lock. The owner stated that the vehicle is not drivable due to these sensors and life-saving features not working.

A child seat may not secure properly |
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles. One or more of the individual welds in the upper child seat anchors may be insufficient. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage System." An insufficient weld may prevent the child seat from being anchored properly, allowing the seat to move during a sudden stop or crash increasing the risk of injury. |
The dealer will inspect the upper child seat anchors and reweld the child seat anchors, as necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on September 02, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 22TB09/ 22TA09. |

Should you buy the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab is a great mid-size truck that boasts a lot of standard features and exceptional off-roading capabilities but it's held back by its dull engine and cramped space. However, the Tacoma is fairly reliable considering that most of the complaints have been isolated incidents. Coming to its competition, the Tacoma goes against the Ford Ranger which is also a great option in the segment as it nearly outperforms the Tacoma in all fields. On the other hand, the Honda Ridgeline is also a good option in the segment as it offers better comfort and upscale cabin materials. Overall we would suggest that despite the Tacoma being a capable vehicle, you should look at other rivals in the segment that offer better overall performance.
