Overview

Polestar is coming up with its first electric SUV that looks very promising. The SUV is not released in the United States as of now and it will only be available by the end of 2023 in the last quarter. Polestar has been a promising brand so far in terms of electric cars. All of their models have given tough competition to the likes of well-established models of Tesla. Polestar works as a performance model of Volvo which also happens to be the parent company of Polestar since 2015.

Both these brands operate under the Chinese company Geely Auto. The Polestar 1 and 2 have got good attention so far in the market and the Polestar 3 should get an even better response. The rising demand for SUVs in every segment can favor the Polestar 3 and the amazing value it offers for the segment. The 2023 Polestar 3 will go against the likes of the 2023 BMW iX, the 2023 Audi e-Tron, and the 2023 Jaguar I-Pace

Buying Advice

The 2023 Polestar 3 does not bring a lot of confusion with the car. It offers an impressive list of standard features with the car. The standard Long range Dual Motor variant makes more sense over the Long range Dual Motor with the Performance pack variant as the difference in performance is not that much. The one with the Performance pack also delivers a lower range which might make a big difference while driving the car on a daily basis. We recommend you go with the standard variant with some optional features that matter to you the most.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Polestar 3 is going to be a 5-seater performance variant of the Volvo Volvo EX90 which is going to be a 7-seater electric SUV in Volvo’s lineup. The Polestar 3 comes with a futuristic design language whether you look at the car from the outside or inside. It looks more like a concept car from a few years back and it will appeal to the young buyers with its design. The performance is also quite good as it can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. You can get the performance pack to further enhance the performance. So far it is manufactured in China only but the production of the car will soon start in Volvo’s South Carolina plant. The 2023 Polestar is going to offer tough competition to its rivals for the price at which it comes.

Features

The 2023 Polestar 3 comes in only one trim level that packs an impressive list of standard features. The expected MSRP of the Polestar 3 starts at $85,300 which is not affordable by any means. The high price sets expectations quite high for the buyers. It gets a strong list of standard features for comfort and convenience. Sharing the manufacturing plant and parts with Volvo means you will not have to compromise on safety at all. There is also a performance pack variant of the Polestar 3 which will come with some cosmetic changes and improvements in performance. The difference in performance is not that much but you might want to go for it for a bigger wheel and some cosmetic changes if it matters to you.

Engine and Performance

The 2023 Polestar 3 is powered by two electric motors. One of the electric motors is mounted on the front while the other one is mounted on the rear axle. It uses a single-speed direct drive transmission that sends power to all the wheels using both motors. The combined power delivery of 489 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque is quite impressive for the segment. The performance is the biggest highlight of the Polestar 3. That shows when you look at the acceleration figures of the 2023 Polestar 3. It takes only 4.9 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph which is quite impressive for the class. The Polestar 3 with Performance pack takes 4.6 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The top speed remains the same for both variants at 130 mph.

The 2023 BMW iX is the fastest SUV in the competition taking only 4 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph. The Bimmer takes 12.4 seconds to complete the quarter-mile run. The 2023 Jaguar I-Pace comes in second position taking only 4.3 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph while the quarter-mile time is also not that behind taking only 12.8 seconds. The Polestar 3 comes in the third position and it can not outperform the Bimmer and Jag even with the performance pack in terms of outright acceleration. The 2023 Audi e-tron is slightly behind its rivals in the 0 to 60 mph sprint and quarter-mile run.

2023 Polestar 3 Ride and Handling

The driving dynamics of the Polestar 3 still remain to be tested once they arrive in the United States. Talking about the seating position for the driver, it feels quite aggressive. It looks like an SUV only from the outside as you get inside you will notice a lower seating position similar to a sedan. It feels sporty from behind the wheel for sure. The performance of the Polestar 3 is also quite good. The lower seating posture should help the driver have better control over the car at higher speeds,

The 2023 Polestar 3 focuses on performance so driving dynamics should not be a major problem for enthusiasts. Based on the experience with previous Polestar models like the Polestar 2, the handling should be quite impressive for the class. You can be confident around the corners as the steering wheel does a decent job in terms of offering feedback. The ride quality of the earlier Polestar models has been amazing. So you should expect a good ride quality even at higher speeds with not much movement in the cabin.

2023 Polestar 3 Braking Performance

There is no data available on the braking hardware of the 2023 Polestar 3. It will only be clear once it is officially released in the United States by the last quarter of 2023. The size of the brake rotors used in the braking system is not available for now. However, being a performance vehicle it should come up with an excellent braking system for its segment. Based on the reputation that Polestar carries so far, you can expect an excellent braking performance. The car should be able to stop pretty well in terms of an emergency. The bite from the brake feels good as of now. The braking performance is predictable on the Polestar models which is a big thing.

Fuel Economy

Polestar as a brand has a positive image when it comes to the range of vehicles. The 2023 Polestar 3 is not only a promising car in terms of performance but it also impresses with its claimed range and efficiency. The real-world MPGe figures are still to be tested when the car arrives in the United States market later this year. It packs a large 111 kWh battery pack in the Polestar 3. The battery should deliver an impressive claimed range of 300 miles. The range will fall down to 270 miles if you go with the performance pack variant of the Polestar 3. The Polestar 3 can support a maximum charging point of up to 250 kW DC charger topping up the SUV from 10 to 80% in just 30 minutes.

But considering that it is a sibling of Volvo, safety should not be a concern for the buyers. The interior layout of the Polestar 3 is also premium and it follows a minimal design language that looks modern and premium. The performance is also quite impressive for the class taking only 4.9 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The BMW iX, on the other hand, follows a more mature design language compared to the Polestar 3 and it has already proven itself as it is the second model year of the iX. The BMW iX is also quicker than the two and comes with better driving dynamics. The Polestar 3 offers a slightly better range compared to the Bimmer. The Audi e-tron is one of the oldest luxury electric SUVs in the segment that has been in the market since 2019. It has spent a long time in the market to prove itself. The Audi e-tron is not the fastest SUV in the competition. Instead, the Audi e-tron comes with the slowest acceleration in the competition taking a little longer than 5 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Audi e-tron also delivers the least driving range in the competition. But the Audi e-tron comes with a more practical cabin than the Polestar 3. 2023 Polestar 3 vs. 2023 Jaguar I-Pace

The 2023 Jaguar I-Pace has also been in the market since 2019 and has been in the market for quite some time. The Jaguar I-Pace has started to feel outdated compared to its modern rivals. The Jag falls behind in terms of the overall driving range and charging time. But it is still quicker than the Polestar 3 in the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Jaguar I-Pace also offers a more practical cabin than the Polestar 3. The Jag comes with a more refined timeless interior design. The Polestar 3 on the other hand is a more modern SUV that offers a better driving range and faster charging time. The choice between the two depends on your preferences.

Final Verdict

The 2023 Polestar 3 is a strong contender in the luxury electric SUV segment. It is going to be the first model year of the Polestar 3 but still, it has received good attention from automotive enthusiasts. The biggest highlight of the Polestar 3 is its distinctive exterior and interior design that looks and feels more modern and futuristic than its rivals.
