... car for the first four years for its power and ride. Then, it hit 5 years, 80,000 miles and the torque converter failed. This is a KNOWN defect subject to one of the many Technical Service Bulletins for this car; yet Nissan won't recall for the defect--it falls to you. Customer Service did not help. They put out junk, knowingly, and then don't stand behind it. Car will require a minimumRead More

I've taken the car into service twice for this and brought them video (I've filmed the driver's console during a rain storm showing it showing the "front radar obstruction" error during a rain storm) and the dealer has returned it both times stating it is working as expected. Thus, this is a $50K car that apparently was manufactured to work only in clear sunny days.Read More

The 2017 Nissan Armada is a strong competitor in the full-size SUV segment that has been put through a major revamp after it was sidelined for the 2016 MY. While the exterior layout gets an update, the Armada also comes with a potent 5.6L V8 engine that generates 390 hp and comes with an AWD setup. Alongside it sports a sublime ride quality and bestows best-in-class dimensions that give you a spacious interior. It is necessarily a rebadged version of a powered-down Nissan Patrol. Coming onto the warranty front, the 2017 Nissan Armada is good for a basic warranty coverage of 3 years/ 36,000 miles, and a powertrain warranty of 5 years/ 60,000 miles.

In terms of problems, the 2017 Nissan Armada doesn’t seem to have much with only 47 complaints and no recalls or investigations against it. Although the complaints are few, they usually revolve around the powertrain failures, airbag deployment failures, and electrical malfunction, albeit dealing with Nissan on this matter is no small task. Let’s see how the 2017 Nissan Armada competes with its competitors like the Toyota Sequoia, the Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Ford Expedition.

2017 Nissan Armada User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine failure and other troubles:. The major complaint about the 2017 Armada is about the engine failing. With no warning beforehand, the engine would fail mid-operation. For one user, the professional who inspected the vehicle said that they had a critical failure on the 7th cylinder not firing, despite the engine being on 60,000 miles only, and is causing the engine failure. The user, in turn, proceeded to get help from Nissan and was met short by the corporation. Another user had an issue where the engine randomly turns off or slows down completely with check lights, resulting in hazards on the highway. No or little help on this matter either from the dealership.
  • Powertrain failing: The vehicle selects random gears while driving for a user and also does not select reverse at times. There is also an issue with the 2017 Nissan Armada transmission, where it fails to shift on lower RPMs and this usually occurs in the range of 30 to 50 mph, as per reports of various users.
  • Steering failure: The steering wheel when turned right stays turning right ( power steering malfunction) and requires correction to avoid collisions on the highway. Further information has not been provided.

Electrical Problems

  • Electrical system stops them from starting the vehicle up: The major issue was with the BCI system malfunctioning, preventing various users from switching on the vehicle let alone driving it. Users also had other issues with the warning light failures of the brakes, engine, or the entire instrument cluster failing, causing a safety hazard. Some users were fortunate enough to get help from Nissan in getting the vehicle repaired for these electrical issues, but most had great difficulty in getting the brand or their dealership to cooperate with the problem.
  • Seat heater causing fire: A couple of users have stated that their seat heater would be the cause of a mass fire outbreak on their vehicle. This has happened to the users in public places and would have caused further destruction. Unfortunately, Nissan has been difficult to deal with and has blamed the users, both times, as the reason.

Safety problem

  • Airbags' failure to deploy: Multiple users have a problem with the airbags not deploying at the time of a collision, even if it was a major collision, causing the occupants to be seriously injured. Whether the owners have filed a complaint or any legal procedures against Nissan or the dealership is unclear at the moment of this writing.

Exterior problem

  • Wheels locking up: For one user, the wheels on the rear started to slowly lock up by increasing the friction on the wheels. The dealership was of no help and did not provide a practical solution to the user.

Should you buy the 2017 Nissan Armada?

It is not a simple one. The Nissan Armada is a very spacious SUV and can be a comfortable family vehicle, and although it has no safety ratings from NHTSA, it wins favors with 0 recalls. But as stated, Nissan and its dealerships can be very difficult to deal with. Also, keep in mind, that Armada does have 47 complaints and if that bothers you for some reason, the 2017 Ford Expedition is also a good choice. At first glance, it might seem the vehicle has a bit more complaints in the NHTSA, but keep in mind that the Ford SUV has much more sales and an official 5- star rating in the NHTSA, and so is a favorable alternative, not to mention the customer service will probably be better.
