New radiators, oil leaks, gasket problems, transmission repairs, shock fitting leaks, spark plug replacements, repair after expensive repair. I spent $15k on repairs for one of them within 9 months! I traded it in and got $15k for the trade-in, which is a hugeRead More

... Overland Jeeps is horrible and has been for multiple years. I own a 2013 Overland and the dash is completely coming undone. If you are out of base warranty, the extended coverage (even the best one) will not cover this repair. The cost to fix this is right at $1,900.00.Read More

There are not many people who are fans of the brand Jeep but there is no denying that in the midsize SUV segment, the most iconic car does the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, in reality, this iconic status is pretty much the only thing the car has going for itself. It has never been a car that provided a lot of reliability or hassle-free maintenance to its owners. Its off-roading capabilities and luxury credentials are noteworthy but with Jeep Grand Cherokee electrical problems being so common and brake failures happening so frequently, we are forced to evaluate this car with a more skeptical perspective. Prices start at an MSRP of $27,332 without options and there are numerous trim levels offered with the vehicle. However, as you can see, the competition consists of cars that have established well in the segment including the Nissan Murano, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Ford Edge. Read on to find out how Jeep Grand Cherokee problems have affected its owners in this particular year.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  1. The most common issue reported about this car is that the engine stalls and shuts down without any warning. Sometimes the issues are electrical and are associated with the alternator, but in other cases, it can be the fuel pump.
  2. A large number of owners have also been greeted by catastrophic engine failures which dampened the ownership experience for them. The most worrying part is that these problems include coding issues, lubrication, starter issues, and emission system problems.
  3. The steering system has a fundamental error in its design and it is known as the Jeep death wobble. This causes the car to go into a state of oscillation after when it is disturbed by bumps of a particular frequency and the worst part is that they occur in real-world driving conditions.
  4. Apart from the death wobble, several people have reported a loss of power steering assistance in the car.
  5. The transmission also has a design fault in which, even while being shifted to Park, it can roll down the slope. This has caused multiple cars to crash.
  6. Another large problem area seems to be the fact that there are miscommunications with the body control module and the power transfer unit malfunctions. This can mess up the transmission, steering, or four-wheel-drive system.
  7. The air suspension in this car also overheats and causes a clunking noise coming from underneath. The repairs for this particular part are also very expensive.

Electrical system problems:

  1. When there are problems with the body control module, the issues may be numerous including loss of power steering assist, traction control, lane assist, emergency brake, backup assist, airbags, or a combination of the above.
  2. The infotainment system can have some glitches and the backup camera can come on without the need for it. Some owners have also reported that the radio stations change abruptly and the infotainment can be hard to manage in general.
  3. In many cases, the service shifter warning light comes on. However, more often than not, it requires the electronic shift module replacement which is expensive.
  4. The auto start-stop function of this car has also generated a lot of complaints. This could also be associated with the Jeep Grand Cherokee alternator problem that we have mentioned above. Many people have had dead batteries due to a wide range of reasons and most of the time, they are not replaced under warranty.
  5. Electrical problems have also resulted in the front jump post or other components melting and causing fire hazards in the car.

Interior problems:

  1. There have been a few complaints about the seats not moving to allow adjustment and the belts not buckling properly.
  2. There is also a widespread problem of the passenger side front seat active headrest breaking and deploying itself.
  3. The automatic seat heating function can overheat and injure passengers.

Safety problems:

  1. In many cases, the airbags do not deploy even been there are life-threatening accidents.
  2. Multiple cars have had problems with the airbag warning light coming on and not being diagnosed properly by the dealership.
  3. The forward collision warning is very inaccurate. It brakes suddenly even when there is nothing in front and can be the cause of rear-end collisions.
  4. The Lane departure warning has also been a problematic feature and can make the car hard to drive.

Exterior problems:

  1. There have been a few complaints about headlight seals leaking and condensation building up, which causes electrical wires to corrode.
  2. A large number of owners have also complained about the paint quality of the car.
  3. Many owners have also reported that the sunroof, windshield, etc. can explode even when there is no impact on them.

Should you buy the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a car that was introduced quite a while ago and hence, we expect the manufacturer to get on top of its problems and fix them already. Despite all this time, however, it still reports a lot of issues that do not have an immediate solution. We can see that despite all this time, the car still reports a very large number of faults and most of them are electrical, brake-related, or engine related. Since all of these are quite hard to manage and users will not be able to use their cars properly and the duration of their ownership, we feel it is better to go with the Nissan Murano, which has reported very few faults.
