Overview

Minivans are all about practicality and comfort. In the age of crossovers and SUVs, one may not find the need to own a minivan. Although the market for minivans is small, it is nice to see brands like Honda still make one. The Odyssey is an offering from Honda which takes on other minivans in the market. The previous year was an introduction to the new generation of the Odyssey and is still one of the top guns in the minivan market. Thus the 2019 Honda Odyssey is a carryforward model from the previous year with a few ups and downs in the trims and the features.

Buying Advice

We recommend you to go for the Touring trim as it is an upgrade from the EX-L trim and just below the top-level Elite trim. It adds a ton of new features like navigation, a rear entertainment screen, etc which were missing in the lower trims. Thus proving more value than the other trims. For a starting price of under forty-five grand, the Touring trim remains the best bet in the Odyssey’s trim lineup.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Honda Odyssey is a three-line family carrier with stylish looks, great interiors mated with the latest technology, and amazing driving dynamics. The 2019 Honda Odyssey will be powered by the same butter-smooth V6 from last year and the price for it starts at $30,190. Having said that, the main competitors of the 2019 Honda Odyssey available in the market are the Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Pacifica, and Kia Sedona. Can the Honda Odyssey stand out as the top minivan for 2019 in the US, let’s find out.

Features
9.0/10

The 2019 Honda Odyssey is available in five trims mainly known as LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite. There are no major changes in the engine specifications. Only the Touring and the Elite trims come with a 10-speed automatic transmission whereas the lower trims come with a 9-speed automatic. The rest of the changes are just the feature upgrades that get better with each higher trim. The base trim starts at $30,190 and prices go up to $47,070 for the Elite trim.

Standard features include 18-inch wheels, a seven-seat configuration, power-adjustable front seats, fabric upholstery, keyless entry with push-button start, rearview camera, and a few more. Going up the trim ladder gets access to features like three-zone automatic climate control, remote start, power-sliding door, heated and ventilated front seats, power moonroof, leather upholstery, all-LED exterior lights, ambient interior lights, etc.

We Recommend

Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The 2019 Honda Odyssey is available in only one engine option. It is powered by a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine that puts out 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The engine is among the best in the segment. The raspy note of the V6 at full-throttle calms down to a silent putter while at city speeds. The engine pulls cleanly and merging into the highway is not an issue in this minivan. The throttle response is progressive and there isn’t a hint of a jerk when pressed hard. The Odyssey picks up the pace well without letting you notice it.

The lower trims of the Odyssey are hooked to a 9-speed automatic transmission whereas the Touring and the Elite trims get a 10-speed automatic transmission. The standard setup on the Odyssey together helps the minivan to accelerate from 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and covers the quarter-mile in 15.0 seconds. Being a minivan those are some serious numbers and goes on to show how capable these Honda V6s are even when plonked into a minivan.

Here, the Honda Odyssey beats its competition in the 0-60 and the quarter-mile run because the minivan is comparatively lighter and nimble than most of its rivals. The Kia Sedona on the other hand is the slowest because of its poor engine performance. That said, the Toyota Sienna puts out the highest 296 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque from its 3.5-liter V6 and scoots from 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds, and covers the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds. Both the figures remain 0.4 seconds more than what the Odyssey took.

Ride and Handling

This is one of the best selling points of the 2019 Honda Odyssey. Despite being larger it handles better than any other minivan. The ride quality is on par because of the good suspension used that soaks up the bumps on the road pretty easily. The Odyssey is quick to change directions and the well-weighted steering wheel ensures piloting this minivan around town and the parking lot of Costco won’t be a hassle.

The cabin on the inside is very silent which gives it a feel of a luxury minivan. The suspension setup of the Odyssey is on a softer side but the ride quality could be further improved. We recommend going for the 18-inch wheels as they offer enough sidewall to soak up the bumps that the bigger 19-inch wheels otherwise filter inside the cabin.

Braking Performance

The 2019 Honda Odyssey is decent when it comes to its braking power. It comes with disc brakes and ABS on all four wheels. The rotors used are very small as compared to its competitors except for the Kia Sedona which has even smaller rotors. Under panic braking, the Honda Odyssey managed to brake from 60-0 mph in 123 feet.

The small rotors do not stop the Honda Odyssey from standing tall amongst its competitors. Both the Chrysler Pacifica and the Kia Sedona offer the best braking performance and ensured these minivans stopped from 60 mph in 119 and 118 feet respectively. Compared to this the Odyssey took 4 and 5 feet more to stop from 60 mph compared to both these minivans.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The 3.5L V6 engine under the hood of the Odyssey does an excellent job of returning a respectable fuel economy without compromising on its performance. The EPA estimates that the 2019 Honda Odyssey will return 19 MPG in the city, about 28 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. However, the fuel tank capacity could have been better which would have increased its overall range. The Odyssey comes with a smaller 19.5-gallon fuel tank that manages just 371 miles and 546 miles of range in the city and on the highway respectively from a full tank of gas.

Although all of the Honda Odyssey’s competitors hit the same ballpark in terms of the MPG figures, the Honda Odyssey has an edge over others with a better range in the cities as well as on highways. So, if you are a buyer who is looking for better mileage then the Honda Odyssey is a better choice for you.

Interior
9.9/10

The 2019 Honda Odyssey sees a little interior change than its previous models. It woos its customers with its interior. The interior layout is very stylish with an abundance of the latest technology. The dashboard of the car is one of the cleanest and the most simplistic interiors you can find in a minivan. The dashboard is covered in soft-touch material and the controls are ergonomically laid out. The AC vents are well-placed and integrated into the dashboard. All the buttons and controls are finished in chrome. The steering wheel is butter smooth and all the buttons are also arranged in a circular manner which looks different. The space in the front is good so there are no issues for taller folks getting in and out of the car.

The minivan seats 7 people in three rows. Cloth seats come standard which can be upgraded to genuine leather. The seats are very impressive on the Odyssey and are comfortable for long rides. The armrest is comfortable and wide enough for both the driver and the passenger. Towards the back, there is sufficient space for two adults. Towards the third row, there is enough space for three adults. You can also completely move the second-row seats for easier access to the third-row seats or it can also be used as cargo space. Overall the entire interior layout of the car is excellent.

The Honda Odyssey kills the competition when it comes to interior space. Because the size of the car is huge, it offers sufficient passenger space. The third-row seats are generous in terms of space in this minivan. Even in the cargo department, there is no match for the Honda Odyssey’s 38.6 cubic feet of cargo space. The Chrysler Pacifica on the other hand has the least 32.3 cubic feet of cargo space in its class.

Some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • Powered tilt and telescopic steering column
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control system w/ humidity control and air filtration
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Leather-trimmed seats (front and outboard 2nd-row)
  • Heated and ventilated front seats

How intuitive is the car’s information system?

The 2019 Honda Odyssey gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The display is of excellent quality and there is no screen glare issue even in bright sunlight. The display includes HD and satellite radio with USB and auxiliary ports. It also has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its tech suite along with wireless device charging.

The optional dual-display rear media system will keep the passengers entertained. It has a WiFi hotspot that will provide a good internet connection inside the car. An 11 speaker BOSE sound system is also available that will take the party to the roads. Finally, it also gets navigation that is accurate and works perfectly fine.

Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Satellite Radio
  • HD Radio
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless device charging
  • Wifi Hotspot
  • A dual-display rear media system
  • 11 speaker BOSE sound system

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2018 model year of the Honda Odyssey received a massive change in terms of interior and exterior styling along with some advanced features. The 2019 model is just a carryforward model so there are no specific exterior changes. The exterior of the Odyssey is curvier and is as stylish as a minivan could get. The hood is sloping downwards providing more visibility to the driver. The windows are massive with a unique design. The side profile of the car has lots of angular cuts and creases and thus looks very busy. The LED headlamps and taillights with a large chrome grille match the aesthetics of the car. The alloys also look premium considering it is a minivan.

The length of the Honda Odyssey measuring at 203.2-inches is the longest amongst all which explains the better interior passenger capacity. Although it isn’t the tallest or the widest van among the competition neither it has the longest wheelbase. Yet it manages to carve out better cabin space and cargo capacity than most of its rivals. Having said that, the ground clearance of this minivan is on the lower side at 4.5-inches only when rivals like the Kia Sedona offer 6.7-inches of ground clearance.

Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • Active shutter grille
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Power sliding doors
  • LED fog lights
  • Side mirrors w/ reverse gear tilt-down and memory function
  • 18-inch alloy wheels

Safety
8.0/10

The Honda Odyssey has been held in high regard in terms of safety by both the agencies and being a minivan the safety of the vehicle remains the prime concern of the prospective buyer. In the case of a minivan like the 2019 Honda Odyssey NHTSA gave it an overall safety rating of 5-stars for its crashworthiness. The 2019 Honda Odyssey gets a perfect 5-star rating for its overall frontal crash protection and side-crash protection while it scored 4 out of 5-stars in the rollover test.

The IIHS also shares a similar opinion and rated the 2019 Odyssey with ‘Good’ in all its six parameters and with ‘Good+’ for the ease of use of LATCH. The front crash prevention of the 2019 Odyssey was rated as ‘Superior’ by the IIHS. Although the headlights of the Odyssey were rated from ‘Acceptable’ to the lowest rating of ‘Poor’ depending on the trim level.

Some of the safety features of the 2019 Honda Odyssey include anti-lock brakes, stability, traction control, front and rear parking sensors, front knee airbags, front second and third-row airbags along with full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. It also includes multi-angle rearview cameras with guidelines for better outward vision.

Some of the standout safety features of the 2019 Honda Odyssey in a nutshell:

  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Collision mitigation braking system
  • Road departure mitigation system
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Lane-keeping assist system
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Auto high-beam headlights
  • Blind-spot information system
  • Cross-traffic monitor

Competition
7.0/10

2019 Honda Odyssey vs 2019 Toyota Sienna

The Honda Odyssey is better than the Toyota Sienna in all the comparisons. It has better interiors, better features, and better engine performance. The Honda Odyssey is a bigger and better minivan than the Toyota Sienna. The Sienna on the other hand offers slightly bigger cargo space and a fuel tank but these two things are not enough to counter what the Odyssey has to offer. Being from Japanese manufacturers both the vans are equally reliable. So, all in all, the 2019 Honda Odyssey is the better option to go.

2019 Honda Odyssey vs 2019 Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica is a direct competitor to the Honda Odyssey. It is loaded with features and has a luxurious cabin for its segment. It has many driver assistance features, safety features, and premium interiors but the Honda Odyssey does it better. The Chrysler Pacifica is a subtle minivan with a lower price tag and offers almost everything that Odyssey does but that's not enough to sway the Odyssey buyers. So, the Honda Odyssey is a good choice if you are ready to pay some extra bucks.

2019 Honda Odyssey vs 2019 Kia Sedona

The Kia Sedona is one of the most practical minivans in the class. Leaving the poor engine performance it has everything else. The Honda Odyssey may be better in many terms but the Kia Sedona on the other hand is more likely to be loved because of the looks of the minivan. It feels more premium than the Odyssey. Also, the Kia Sedona is much cheaper than the Odyssey. But when it comes to practicality and safety the Honda Odyssey leaps ahead of the Sedona and for a minivan customer, these two things are of the top priority. So, there is no reason why you would reject Odyssey for the Sedona.

Final Verdict
8.7/10

The 2019 Honda Odyssey is one of the best minivans you can buy now in the market. It has excellent interiors with lots of the latest techs and features. The Honda Odyssey gives everything that you may need. There is hardly any reason to doubt that as it happens to be the top-seller in the minivan segment.

If you are ready to pay the extra bucks then you won’t have any issues as it proves its worth. Most importantly it drives way better than any minivan in the market. It has more seating space and cargo space than others. So, if you are planning to go for the 2019 Honda Odyssey then you have made the right choice.
