Dealer says a computer update may take care of the problem but doesn't know when there will be an update. It could be that other 19 Accord Touring Hybrid models have not had all the issues I have. ... Desert. Finally, I call the dealer at 4 pm. At THAT time, the service rep told me that Honda did not approve the repair. They never called to tell me this, and this was completely inconsistent with what the service manager told me before bringing the car in, as well as the service rep at the dealer when dropping it off. The quality of the vehicle overall was questionable at best. The stereo was a complete joke. The material on the dash rubbedRead More

Nearly all automakers that produce a midsized car have a hybrid variant and for Honda, it is their Honda Accord Hybrid. The sedan has impressive cargo space, a classy and midsized interior, and offers a considerable amount of safety features that are standard in all vehicles. But, how well does the Japanese vehicle handle in terms of overall safety and reliability? Well, the sedan has had 3 recalls, 1 investigation that is still going on, and 220 complaints. Complaints related to the service brakes and electrical connections were the most common ones. The competitors of the Honda Accord Hybrid are the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Toyota Avalon Hybrid. What is the specialty of the Honda Hybrid and how does it differ from the other competitors?.

2019 Honda Accord hybrid problem and complaints

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine problems: Coolant leaks, broken head gasket, stalling, sudden engine shutdowns, fuel injectors blocked, cracked engine cylinders are the few complaints received regarding the engine of the sedan. This as far as mentioned hasn’t caused any serious injuries to the users, but this can be troublesome and cause potential hazards while in operation. Not to mention time and money fixing the problems.
  • Braking at random: Out of all the complaints, the most received complaint was about the service brakes. Several users had issues with the brake lights going off without pressing the brake pedal and the car braking in between while driving quite often. Few users incurred injuries due to these issues. Despite receiving lots of complaints, there is currently no recall or investigation going on about this issue and the complaints are rising.
  • Steering freezes: There has been a noticeable amount of issues about the car regarding the steering losing power and freezing in between, causing serious safety risks. There have been no injuries so far.

Electrical Problems

  • Electrical malfunctions a handful: There were 38 complaints regarding electrical malfunction. Some users noticed that the warning lights, check engine light, and tire pressure warning light would turn on for no reason. When took to repair there was no problem. The other issues were related to the power steering, abnormal alarm sounds, safety sensor malfunction, navigation system rebooting while reaching a certain speed limit, power shut down while driving, and a few other glitches.

Safety Problems

  • Forward collision avoidance system doing more harm than good: Few users had the same experience when the car was turning right or left the brakes would suddenly engage and stop, and the brake lights would be on. Traction lights automatically on for no specified reason, inadvertent activation of the collision mitigation braking system was a serious safety issue and there is a current investigation going on. For more details refer to NHTSA action number PE22003.
  • Airbags failing to deploy on time: Quite a few users have had issues with the airbags of the sedan not deploying while an accident or a crash occurred. Few users had injuries due to the airbags not engaging, which is a serious safety problem.

Should you buy the 2019 Honda Accord hybrid

Yes, Honda Accord Hybrid can be considered because of its all-around performance. The overall safety is 5 out of 5 according to NHTSA and besides that, the sedan performs above average than expected. The only downside about the sedan is that while driving sometimes the engine tends to make noises, but you’ll get used to it and those noises go away sometimes without ever needing maintenance or repair. As far as safety, as you can see there were a few problems mentioned. But taking into account that there are more vehicles out there with no issues, the safety concerns are little to none. But if you change your mind about getting the sedan, a few other good options are the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Toyota Avalon Hybrid, both are great choices for the money.
