Genesis is a luxury subdivision of Hyundai motor corp. and makes class-leading vehicles in terms of style that go head to head with competitors. Hence, the Genesis G80 is a top-ranked vehicle in the luxury midsize sedan segment despite having competitors like the Mercedes E-Class, the Cadillac CTS, and the Audi A7. The Genesis G80 usually comes with a standard 3.8-liter V6 engine. It also has an Ultimate version with a big 5.0 liter V8 and comes with a well-equipped interior with fancy features. Officially, the vehicle has just 1 recall and is stated to have no investigations but has 28 complaints. Most of the user grievances revolve around the brakes and powertrain, with the ABS failing in the brakes department and the inadequacy of the transmission in the powertrain department. Let's fasten our seatbelts and go on a journey to find out the problems with this sedan.

User Complaints and Problems for the 2017 Genesis G80

Mechanical Problems

  • Powertrain-. Some consumers found out that the G80 has problems with transmission making it rev higher on the same gear, not shift, and also vibrate vigorously at times.
  • Steering failure - The Genesis G80 has a problem with power steering, which causes the car to not return to a straight position after turning left, and the driver has to turn right in order to stop this issue temporarily

Electrical Problems

  • Electrical system-. Consumers have had multiple complaints about the ABS sensor short-circuiting, resulting in some vehicles being burnt. This was a significant issue that had caused Hyundai to recall certain models of the Genesis G80, you can refer to NHTSA ID: 21V160000 for more information.
  • Forward collision avoidance – An owner faced an issue with the AEB feature failing to deploy, causing a front-end collision despite an attempt to brake and avoid a collision.

Exterior Problems

  • Structure -. One user had the trunk jammed when they accidentally pressed the release trunk button on their key fob. This happened while the vehicle was iced, resulting in the trunk being completely jammed and having to be taken to a service center to be fixed before being functional again.

ABS system might short circuit.

An electrical short circuit might occur inside the ABS that can potentially cause an engine fire whether parked or driving.

The dealership will replace the faulty ABS fuse free of charge.

Should you buy the 2017 Genesis G80?

Yes, the 2017 Genesis G80 is a fabulous car if you want a luxury sedan that is not only good-looking but also reliable and safe since it got a 5-star overall rating from NHTSA. If you’re looking for a powerful luxury sedan it is recommended to get the Ultimate version with a 5 liter V8, since it gives 480 hp, making it a pretty fast car. Although it was recalled due to the ABS system short-circuiting, the Genesis has a minor recall compared to its competitors. However, if you are looking for more brute force, it is recommended to buy a 2017 Audi A7 that is a bit more luxurious and has better features but do keep in mind that it is more expensive to maintain.
