... of crap! Worse car I have ever owned! 2014 Chrysler 200, only 45,000 kms on it. Nothing but repairs from the start. Can’t afford to get a new car so am continually having to pay big money for repairs. Latest was new rear brakes and rotors, next is replacing the transmission.....At two years old and about 2,000 kms onRead More

Chrysler has managed to make a great compact sedan even though the market comprises strong players like the Chevrolet Malibu, the Ford Fusion, and the Honda Accord. Chrysler hasn’t changed anything for 2014 but still, the car managed to cross the 100k mark in terms of sales. The 2014 Chrysler 200 has a total of 174 complaints and just a single recall, suggesting the car to be reliable. The majority of the complaints are related to faulty airbag issue and this was later addressed by the brand. The $21,795 price tag of the Chrysler makes it hold great value and a lot of complaints were repetitive, which is the only reason for the complaints to cross 170. Let us go through the issues in detail.

User complaints and problems

Electrical Problems

  • Door locks – Users reported the front door locks to not work and they had to manually use the key to open and lock the door. The cause was found to be a dead door lock switch which had to be replaced.
  • MAF sensor – The mass airflow sensor was said to fail and cause improper amounts of fuel to enter the engine. This often caused the car to stall and the sensor had to be immediately replaced.

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine – The owners noticed a puddle of oil underneath the car and some even noticed a hesitation in the drive when trying to accelerate, eventually stalling the car. The dealers had to take the engine apart and it was found that the oil filter housing and the filter were broken and needed a replacement.
  • Fuel system - The car was said to stutter and misfire with a gas smell in the cabin. The user stopped the car and got it towed to the nearby dealer. It was found that the fuel pump had cracked and it sprayed fuel on the bottom of the car. Mechanics claimed it to be a rare sighting and needed to replace the fuel pump.
  • Powertrain – The transmission was said to jerk and make a grinding noise while driving. This was said to be a very common issue and the transmission bands were said to need a rebuild while the torque converter needed to be replaced. This expensive visit to the dealers fixed the issue.
  • Brakes – The users found the brake pedal to feel weird and the car was taking extra time to slow down than usual. The dealers inspected and found the brake fluid to be low as the master cylinder was said to be faulty, causing this leak.
  • Steering wheel – The steering rack assembly had to be replaced as the steering started feeling very hard. It made maneuvering the car difficult and could cause a collision if driven for long.

Safety Problems

  • Airbags – The users noticed the airbag lights turning on and off intermittently while driving. This causes serious issues as the airbags may not even deploy during a crash. Owners had to get the airbags and the airbag modules replaced.

Interior Problems

  • Seats – The driver headrest was said to fracture due to the active head restraint activation even though there were no collisions.

Exterior Problems

  • Headlights – A deteriorated seal on the headlights lets moisture seep in and this causes condensation in the unit. It also damaged the bulb inside and needed to be replaced. The lights, in general, were said to be very poor and dull, making it hard to drive at night.

Should you buy the 2014 Chrysler 200?

The Chrysler 200 is definitely a sedan worth considering if you haven’t. This compact sedan has faced a very limited set of complaints and most of them have immediate and easy fixes. Users had issues with the airbag and seatbelts, which the company resolved by recalling all the affected vehicles. The Chrysler feels very sturdy and stable to drive, making it safe and the user-friendly drive character makes it easy for a new driver to drive this car around safely. The Honda and Chevrolet might be cheaper to maintain but the Chrysler 200 has far lesser issues when compared and this clearly shows the car to be reliable. For this reason, we suggest picking the Chrysler 200 over its rivals.
