Overview

The 2013 BMW 5 Series sedan is a midsize luxury sedan offered in 3 trims, starting off at a base MSRP of $47,800. For that price, it mainly competes with the Audi A6, the Mercedes Benz E-class, and the Jaguar XF. Between 3 trims, the 5 Series offers 3 powertrains. The base engine is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine capable of making 240 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. The 535i models get a 3.0L turbocharged inline 6 engine which puts out 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. If more power is required, there is also a 400 horsepower-making 4.4L turbocharged V8 engine. All three engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission however the mid-level 535i and top-line 550i get a 6-speed manual transmission as optional. The 5 Series reaches 60 mph from zero in 6.4 seconds on its base engine, which gets pumped up to 5.9 seconds with the inline 6 engine and further drops to 5.5 seconds with the V8 engine. Depending on the powertrain, the 5 Series can manage a combined fuel economy between 17 and 28 mpg. While we're on the topic of choices, the 18 striking colors the 5 Series comes in really pull you towards itself.

Buying Advice

We believe the mid-level 535i trim offers the best combination of features and performance for a reasonable price. The top trim boasts a V8 engine but seems too powerful for daily driving. However, the turbocharged inline-6 engine in the 535i delivers an adequate amount of power to blast on the highway yet you can drive it in traffic with ease. In addition to that, going for the all-wheel drive xDrive would make more sense, as it offers better road grip and traction in any weather conditions.
