The 2022 Toyota Venza may be a car that is banking on an earlier name from the same brand but it is quite innovative. Having been introduced only in 2021, there are no sales figures to back this car but predicted maintenance costs are just about $1,564 over five years. Prices are at a slight premium, starting at an MSRP of $34,105, but what you get for this price is a car that gets a lot of accolades from Consumer Reports. It has a predicted reliability rating of four out of five and is listed as number 4 out of 11 midsize crossover SUVs in their rankings. This is high praise considering it competes against segment favorites like the Kia Telluride, the Hyundai Palisade, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Let us learn more about Toyota Venza's reliability through this article.
2022 Toyota Venza User Complaints and Problems
There are only two years based on which we can have conclusive evidence about the dependability of this vehicle - 2021 and 2022. Coming from Toyota, the reliability expectations are sky-high. According to the NHTSA website, for the two years it has been in production, real-world reliability compares to what we have learned from predicted reliability surveys. The car has only reported five complaints in the 2021 model year which speaks a lot because usually, cars have a lot of issues in their debut model year. The 2022 model further reduces this number down to a single complaint. Although this number is in proportion to the units sold, we still feel it has not given much of a headache. The complaints are explained in detail below.
Mechanical problems:
- One owner reported that when filling up the gas tank of this vehicle, it shows erroneous readings and the owner does not have an idea when it is full and when it is empty. One can see that the same kind of problems apply to other hybrid vehicles from Toyota such as the RAV4. These parts have the same part number and hence can be assumed to be defective in terms of design. The 2021 Toyota Venza fuel tank problems have been reported in many online forums.
Exterior problems:
- Another one on the list of 2021 Toyota Venza issues is that both the left and right headlights in low beam settings have a very visible dark shadow. This could be due to a defect in the design of the headlamps and it projects to the left when driving, keeping the driver distracted at night. The issue seems to disappear when switching to high beams.
Safety problems:
- One owner reported that the car was involved in a collision when another vehicle merged onto the highway. At this point, the passenger side seatbelt had malfunctioned. Instead of securing the passenger, it loosened and the passenger hit their head on the dashboard and injured themselves.

Apart from the problems that have surrounded the fuel tank and the headlamps, there aren’t many common problems reported so far about the Venza. The previous generation had a lot of complaints including widespread Toyota Venza transmission problems. However, since the car has changed considerably over the years, we do not need to worry much about that. Let us take a look at the history of the recall and see whether Toyota has responded to the problems well.
2022 Toyota Venza Recalls
Having a reputation that is not very troublesome, we do not expect a lot of recalls from a car such as this. And yet, the manufacturer has not addressed some of the problems that look like common faults. According to several sources, owners have reported Toyota Venza power liftgate problems but these have not been acknowledged by the manufacturer. We find that it is not as reliable as some of the other products from the manufacturer. There are small reliability issues other than this such as Toyota Venza door lock problems that are coming to light now. There is one recall issued so far and we take a look at it below.

A short circuit in the electrical system can cause the failure or dimming of the rear turn signal and hazard lights, both resulting in reduced visibility of the vehicle to other drivers. |
None of the common complaints that owners have raised were covered by the recall that Toyota issued. Although the complaints' freuency is low and we’re not sure how many cars have been affected, we do sincerely hope that there is some solution for them. Also, since the car has just got into production last year, we can give the manufacturer a benefit of doubt.
Which model year of the Toyota Venza should you avoid?
The current generation of the Toyota Venza was introduced in 2021 and hence, it leaves us without much data. If we are recommending any model year to avoid including the previous generation, it would be the 2009 model. The number of 2009 Toyota Venza recalls does not do justice to the number of problems people faced with it. The current generation cannot be recommended to be avoided since it is yet to prove its mettle.
Should you buy the 2022 Toyota Venza?
The 2022 Toyota Venza hybrid SUV has been introduced with a lot of promise. Initially, it looked quite good due to its excellent predicted reliability scores and recommendations by several organizations and yet, several customers have had complaints. Many of these complaints are not recorded on the NHTSA website. It is a decently loaded SUV but in a category with several competitors that have proved their reliability while doing everything the Venza can, it is not the recommended pick.
