Tundra is a decent truck from Toyota that aims to take on the renowned American trucks in this segment. But it isn’t exactly the top choice for many, since it is old and has been due for an update for a long time. Nevertheless, you still get Toyota’s reliability with that badge. So you can expect good service, even though it might not be the best option out there. 2017 Tundra CrewMax has 54 complaints recorded on the NHTSA website, most of which are about the lights and electrical system. It also has 6 recalls and an investigation, which is a bit more than usual but not too bad. 2017 Toyota Tundra CrewMax comes with a starting price tag of $31,415 and it competes against the likes of Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 and RAM 1500.
User Complaints for the 2017 Toyota Tundra CrewMax
Mechanical Complaints
- Engine – There are only two complaints registered- Both of them complain about an issue regarding oil leaks and problems with the exhaust system.
- Powertrain – Complaints regarding the powertrain state that the transmission down shifts and then upshifts whenever the truck goes over slight inclines. This causes disbalance and might even lead to problems on the road.
- Brakes – There are quite a few complaints about the brakes and most of them are about the fact that the Integrated Brake Controller (IBC) does not work correctly. It apparently can’t send enough power to the trailer brakes and hence, the trailer brakes don’t work. This seems to be a part of a more widespread issue with the truck overall.
Safety Complaints
- Airbags – There are just a couple of safety complaints. And one such incident stated that the driver rear-ended another vehicle. But the airbags failed to deploy, and so did the Toyota Safety System.
Electronics Issues
- Exterior lighting – This seems to be the most widespread issue in the Tundra. Whenever drivers used to turn on the turn signals, it would immediately cause the headlights and all the exterior lighting to turn off. This is quite dangerous during the night, since loss of the headlights can put the truck in a dangerous situation. Not only that, the dashboard lights also seem to dim. The owners would have to turn the switch off to turn the lights back on. Most of the complaints regarding the Tundra are related to the exterior lights.

Should you buy the 2017 Toyota Tundra CrewMax?
While the 2017 Tundra CrewMax is not plagued with problems left and right, it still does have a major issue with the lights. Granted, it does not happen every time and not in every model, but if it does occur, it might lead to a deadly situation. Toyota has not yet put out a recall for this particular issue. And even though not every owner has faced this, it might happen randomly. So, we would hold off on the thought and try to grab a better option.
