Overview

The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab is out for sale with a starting price of $28,405. It gets two engine options- a 285-hp V6 and a 355-hp V8 engine, the latter being a much-preferred option for daily driving and towing duties. Speaking of towing, the Sierra can tow up to 9,800 pounds, which is segment-best. With a combined mileage of 20 MPG, the Sierra trails in terms of fuel economy.

The premium interiors of the Sierra offer class-leading passenger space and cargo volume. The latter differs based on the bed selected i.e. standard or long bed. However, the Sierra scored only 78 out of 100 for its reliability according to J.D. Power, which is quite less than its rivals. Speaking of rivals,  the Sierra 1500 gets fierce competition from the likes of the Ford F-150, the Chevrolet Silverado, and the RAM 1500.

Buying Advice

We prefer you buy the SLE trim as it adds an upgraded infotainment system. This includes an 8-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, WI-Fi hotspot,  HD radio, and satellite radio. Moreover, this trim is also eligible for adding optional driver assistance features, unlike the Base model.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Ruggedly handsome, the 2017 GMC Sierra gains some nice safety tech for 2017 and remains one of the most desirable big pickups- The Car Connection

The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab has always been one of the top contenders in the full-size pickup truck segment. Things such as its nice-looking interiors, class-leading towing capacity, and outstanding cargo volume make it unique in its segment. The engine lineup is good for a daily driver's task but both engines suck a lot of fuel. In terms of safety, the Sierra earned decent ratings but none of the safety techs are standard.

Compared to the Ford F-150, which is its core rival, the Sierra 1500's ownership costs are a bit higher. That's because, over the years, it will depreciate faster than the F-150. You may have to shell about $8,160 every year for its fuel, maintenance, repair, depreciation, etc. On average, you have to spend $0.54 for every mile you drive in the Sierra, which is again more than the F-150 due to less efficiency.

Features
7.4/10

Like all full-size pickups, the Sierra comes with a wide array of choices- Autotrader

Only two trims are available for the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab which include the Base and SLE trims. Pricing begins from $28,405 and it reaches up to $39,210, excluding a destination fee of $1,175. Both the models are available in RWD and 4WD configurations. 17-inch steel wheels are standard on the base trim but the SLE model gets aluminum rims instead of steel.

The base trim doesn't come with many standard features but the SLE trim adds some creature comforts like satellite radio, Wi-Fi hotspot in the larger 8-inch IntelliLink screen. It also comes with EZ-lift and lower tailgate which eliminates the need to slam the tailgate. The Enhanced Driver Alert package adds the necessary driver-assist features only the SLE trim while the base trim lacks safety features.

Trim Base SLE

We Recommend
We prefer you buy the SLE trim as it adds an upgraded infotainment system. Moreover, this trim is also eligible for adding optional driver assistance features, unlike the base model.

Fuel Economy
7.6/10

The base powerplant is a good fit for fuel efficiency-focused buyers- Left Lane News

The GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab is one of the least fuel-efficient trucks in its segment. In its RWD guise, it returns 18 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on a highway, and 20 MPG combined. If you select a 4WD drivetrain, the mileage falls down by 1 MPG, both in the city and on the highway. These MPG figures are not the best in the segment.

The Sierra 1500 is fitted with a 26-gallon fuel tank whereas the models with a long bed get a 34-gallon fuel tank. A class-leading combined range of 546 miles is obtained in this truck with the FWD models while the combined driving range in the 4WD models slightly reduces to 507 miles. For a truck that weighs more than 4,500 lbs, fuel economy is decent.

MPG (City) 18 18 18 17

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles) 468/624/546 414/575/494 468/624/546 442/650/546

All the trucks return the same combined mileage figure but efficiencies differ. The Ford F-150 is the soul savior when it comes to fuel efficiency but its small tank strives to deliver good range to compete with its rivals. Despite making more power, the RAM 1500's fuel estimates and driving range are more or less similar to the GM siblings.

Interior
7.6/10

The Sierra has the basics down with decent ride control, comfortable seats, and low road and wind noise- Edmunds

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab Seats and Comfort

The interior of the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab feels upscale and uses high-quality materials throughout the cabin. It honestly feels like a well-appointed study. The regular cab models have a seating capacity of three while these seats are dressed in cloth. The seats are comfortable and have a high seating position as you'd expect from a truck. The driver and the passenger's seats are 4-way manually-adjustable.

The steering wheel is tilt and telescopic only on the SLE trim and it includes various buttons for audio and cruise controls. The Sierra's cabin is impressively spacious. It offers class-leading head and legroom and therefore, this cab is best suitable for six-footers. The optional sunroof further opens up the cabin. Features such as a 10-way power driver's seat, 110V power outlet, power windows, and remote engine start can be availed as options.

According to the numbers listed on the table, the GM siblings clearly have the roomiest interiors among their rivals. The Ford F-150 offers slightly less head and legroom but is adequate to accommodate adults in its cabin. On the other hand, the RAM 1500 offers the least passenger space in its class. I can be tough for six-footers to adults to adjust themselves in this cabin.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab Infotainment System

A 4.2-inch non-touch display sits at the center of the dashboard is standard in the base model while the SLE trim replaces it with an 8-inch touchscreen display. These screens run GMC's intuitively laid out IntelliLink infotainment system, which is one of the best in the business. IntelliLink also comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for enhanced connectivity to your smartphone.

A 6-speaker sound system is standard in the SLE trim while the base model gets only 4 speakers. The system is fast and the touchscreen's responsiveness is great. You get all the modern niceties like pinch-to-zoom as well. The system has a combination of touch and physical shortcut buttons to help to navigate through the system. It can easily through menus and you can customize the screen by dragging icons.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab Cargo Volume

The GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab gets access to two cargo beds- a standard and a long bed. The standard bed offers a cargo capacity of 61 cu-ft. while the long bed increases the volume to 76.3 cu-ft. These figures are the best in the segment and no other rivals' offering is close to the Sierra. This makes the Sierra stand out from the competition.

GMC knew that apart from the towing capacity, sufficient cargo volume is also necessary for a pickup truck. On the SLE trim, the tailgate itself is remote locking and has EZ-Lift technology. It also gets LED pickup bed lights while the base model gets a regular tailgate. The corner steps are an ingenious way to get into the bed.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab Dimensions and Weight

The GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab received a midcycle refresh just last year, so this year nothing much has really changed. There are two new exterior colors but the actual styling remains the same. The biggest update last year was front-end styling. While it still has the squared-off look that GMC is famous for, the grill is now more rounded-off on the edges. GMC nicely includes a chrome grille standard on every Sierra while the grille designs differ by trims.

The lighting has a modern and premium look. HID projector-beam headlights are standard as are the LED DRLs that surround them. The 8.2-inch ground clearance is less than its rivals but is enough for mild off-roading. Although its wheelbase is short, its interior is the roomiest. The Sierra gets 17-inch wheels as standard but 18 and 20-inch wheels are optional. Also, there are plenty of wheel designs available too. Coming to the back, you'll get the same premium but macho looks.

At 8.7 inches, the RAM 1500 has the highest ground clearance, perfect for traveling on rougher roads easily. The Ford F-150's wheelbase measures 3.4 inches more than the Sierra, A wide wheelbase helps for better stability at high speeds and a comfortable ride. The GM siblings have the shortest overall length that comes in handly while parking at tight spots.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab vs 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab

The Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra are basically twin brothers. Therefore, both trucks pack the same engine, towing and cargo capacities, interior dimensions, safety features, and exterior dimensions. However, there are few things that can be pointed out. The front-end styling of the Silverado differs from the Sierra. Also, the fit and finish of the materials in the Silverado are not that good as the Sierra. Hence, its initial price is slightly cheaper.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab vs 2017 Ford F-150 Regular Cab

The Ford F-150 packs a smaller engine but makes similar power to the Sierra. However, when it comes to performance, the Sierra is a tad bit faster than the F-150 despite weighing more. Also, its tow ratings are 2,200 lbs less than the Sierra but its fuel efficiency is the best in this segment. Inside, the F-150 offers slightly less head and legroom than the Sierra but its cargo volume is a bit ahead. In view of safety, the F-150 offers a long list of safety techs than the Sierra.

2017 GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab vs 2017 RAM 1500 Regular Cab

The RAM 1500 has the lowest starting price in this competition but houses the most powerful engine. Due to its added curb weight, its acceleration is not impressive. Also, its towing capacity is the least in its class while the fuel ratings are almost similar to the Sierra. Moving to the interior, the RAM 1500's cabin feels cramped than the Sierra while its cargo capacity is also less. It also trails behind the Sierra in terms of safety ratings and features.

Final Verdict

The GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab is one of the strong contenders in the segment as it boasts an attractive cabin and a powerful engine lineup. It also leads the back with its outstanding towing capacity but its ride quality sometimes feels harsh. The Sierra is the patient zero of the lux truck market but GMC caters to more than just luxury buyers. Therefore, if you are looking to buy a spacious and comfortable pickup truck with a grunty powertrain, say hello to the Sierra 1500.
