I'm not picky when it comes to road noise, so I didn't think that would be an issue, but it was. On the highway it was very noticeable, even to the point of aggravating. Then there was the vibration. And here's the first complaint - why isn't the steering wheel heated all the way round? It's only heated at the 9-3 position, and it's a nerve calling it heated. The Toyota Sienna has been striving in the scarcely-populated minivan segment with its strong characteristics. Even with the declining sales figure over the past couple of years, Toyota has maintained the van’s dependability. With a base price of $34,560, the 2022 Toyota Sienna competes with the Kia Carnival, the Honda Odyssey, and the Chrysler Pacifica. The Toyota Sienna is at par with its competitors when reliability is concerned however, the Chrysler Pacifica has come out as the highest-selling minivan in the segment.

The Sienna faced a lesser number of complaints as compared to its rivals and boasts a full five-star crash test rating from the NHTSA as well. More than a couple of model years from the third generation of the Sienna faced the highest number of complaints while the numbers were quite favorable by the end of that generation. Also, the latest fourth-generation model of the van has seen fewer issues as well.

Toyota Sienna user complaints and problems

The 2022 Toyota Sienna has zero complaints to date while the 2021 model has recorded only six complaints against it. However, it is necessary to have a complete understanding of the problems that might crop up during the ownership tenure of the older models. The problems listed below are the most frequently encountered ones by several owners but are absent on the latest generation model of the vehicle.

Engine problems

  • Hesitant acceleration due to fuel pump fault: This issue affected several vehicles from the third generation of the van. The 2018 and 2019 models recorded the highest complaints regarding this issue. The possible cause was determined to be a faulty fuel pump. To tackle this issue, Toyota issued a couple of recalls with reference numbers 20V012000 and 20V682000 which mentioned fuel pump failures.

Safety problems

  • Airbags not deployed: There were a few complaints regarding the non-deployment of the airbags during a crash. During the incidents, the occupants, as well as the drivers of the affected vehicles, did face injuries but all of them were not serious in nature.

Electrical problems

  • Remote key/keyfob not working: A few reports stated that the remote key of the affected vehicles failed to work as intended. Among the affected vehicles, some were equipped with a push start system which also refused to work since the remote key was not detected by the vehicle.

Miscellaneous problems

  • Exploding moonroof/cracked windshield: Not more than a couple of complaints were registered regarding this issue. The reports stated that in some isolated incidents, the windshield of a Sienna developed a crack after being parked for months. Another report mentioned that while driving, the entire moonroof of the van exploded without any external impact.

2022 Toyota Sienna recalls

The latest generation of the Toyota Sienna has shown excellent improvement in its reliability department with zero recalls and negligible complaints against it. Even the last couple of model years from the third-generation model of the van had minimal complaints. But, there were seven recalls against the 2019 and 2018 models combined for the complaints they faced. The following table lists the details of the recalls.

What model year of the Toyota Sienna to avoid?

If you’re planning to go for a used example from the current generation of the van, you don’t need to skip any. However, considering the recalls and the complaints faced by the third-gen models, the ones dating back before the 2018 model year are better avoided.

Should you buy a used Toyota Sienna?

The Toyota Sienna is among the safest and the most reliable options in the segment. With its long list of features and spacious cabin, it makes becomes an unavoidable family mover in the segment even from the used car lots as well. If you find its design a bit too bland for your taste, the Kia Carnival or the Chrysler Pacifica might make for great alternatives.
