I gave up my 2010 Prius with 285000 miles for a brand new Rav 4. I wanted to love a fresh start with a new Toyota. I was disappointed from the first week. I don't give up on relationships that quick, so haveRead More

I purchased a 2021 Rav 4 last year and the mouldings are melting and the side view mirrors are detaching. The dealer is stating this is happening because I am parking in the sun too long and it's not covered under my warranty. Never heard of such a thing. Most of the time my car is parked in the garage. Will never purchase this car again. Read More

... again right where the brackets are. I contacted Toyota and requested a meeting with a Toyota Service Department supervisor. They had a representative contact me, and I was told that the problem is Solar related and they will not help with the problem. I have a bumper to bumper warranty and the windows are between the bumpers, but they will do nothing. Read More

Toyota is and always has been a reliable and trustworthy choice for the customers. The 2021 Toyota Rav4 holds true to this. The compact SUV has its own set of problems ranging from rattling noises to defective gas tanks. The 2021 model year of the Toyota Rav4 registers 57 complaints in all. However, the 2021 RAV4 has no recalls registered so far and shows a steady trend of rising sales. The 2021 Toyota Rav4 rivals the likes of compact SUVs such as the Honda C-RV, the Nissan Rogue, and the Mazda CX-5. CarHp ranks the SUV 4th place in the list of top 10 compact SUVs for 2021. Let’s take a closer look at the SUV.

The "HOWSTUFFINMYCARWORKS" offers you information on different automotive aspects. The "HOWSTUFFINMYCARWORKS" have noticed that RAV4 is prone to engine stalling while a few have been recalled for the defected steering column. To know more, check the video mentioned below:

User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Problems

  • Powertrain - Rav4 users experience a jerky drive with the SUV lurking forward. The faulty torque delivery is the suspected primary cause of the issue. Few complaints report gearbox jamming in the ‘park mode’ under driving conditions. This disengagement of the gear lever prevents the shifting of gears.
  • Suspension - The SUV fails to absorb the impact from uneven driving surfaces. This compromises the car’s terrain adaptability and riding comfort. Users report heavy body vibrations due to poor shock absorption which results in loosening of the side view mirrors.

Electrical Problems

  • Driver aids - Major electrical problems with the SUV are lane-departure assist and auto-emergency-braking (AEB) malfunctions. Lane-keep assist malfunctions results in veering the SUV from side to side. This compromises vehicle control. AEB malfunctions lead to unexpected braking. A few cases of AEB malfunction report a failure of the application of brakes.

Safety Problems

  • Airbags - Rav4 users experience failure of airbag deployment in event of a crash. This compromises the safety of the vehicle occupants.

Exterior Problems

  • Gas tank - Toyota claims the SUV gas tank can hold up to 14+ gallons of fuel. Complaints report defective gas tanks holding no more than 10-11 gallons of fuel. This leads to an unexpected loss of drive.
  • Rattling - The Toyota SUV is prone to rattling noise under driving conditions. This problem escalates over time and worsens by driving through rough surfaces. Poor shock absorption fails to mitigate the issue.
  • Sunroof/moonroof - Rav4 user complaints report unexpected shattering of the vehicle’s sunroof/moonroof with a loud bang. This can injure the occupants or distract the driver. Toyota claims environmental temperature and pressure variation to be the primary cause. So far Toyota has not come up with a legitimate solution for the issue.
  • Windshield - The windshield of the SUV is prone to cracking and shattering. Toyota claims high environmental temperatures to be the primary cause. The fix for this is claimed to be in the pipeline.
  • Tires - The valve stems of the SUV are fragile and prone to breaking. Defective valve stems result in leakage of tire pressure. This can lead to a tire blowout under driving conditions or result in a flat tire for a parked vehicle.

Recalls

Toyota focuses on prompt and effective recalls to ensure the customers a safe and reliable experience. In the case of the Rav4, Toyota has not yet come across the need for a recall. The 2021 Toyota Rav4 records 57 complaints in all. However, the SUV does not come across any major problems and hence shows a clean record with 0 recalls. Plotting the numbers across the rivals, the Nissan Rogue tops the list with 5 recalls for the 2021 model year. The 2021 Honda CR-V registers 1 recall followed by the 2021 Mazda Cx-5 with no recalls registered.

Should you buy the 2021 Toyota Rav4?

The 2021 Toyota Rav4 makes for a potent SUV that suits both the city and highway requirements. The SUV’s compact dimensions work great for the city commute. The comfort, cabin space, and utility offered by the SUV make touring convenient. The RAV4 comes across a fair share of problems of complaints but with no registered recalls, NHTSA gives the SUV a 5-star safety rating. Toyota also takes pride in assuring after-sales customer assistance. With this, the 2021 Toyota Rav4 earns a go-ahead from CarHp.
