Overview

The 2013 Toyota Matrix Hatchback is a subcompact hatchback offered in 2 trims, starting off at a base MSRP of $19,275. For that price, it mainly competes with the Honda Fit Hatchback, the Ford Focus Hatchback, and the Mazda 3 Hatchback. Between 3 trims, the Toyota Matrix Hatchback offers 2 powertrains. The base engine is a 1.8L inline-4 engine capable of making 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque, mated to either a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission. If more power is required, there is also a 158 horsepower-making 2.4L inline-4 engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic transmission. The Matrix hatchback hits 60 mph from zero in 9.9 seconds on its base engine, which gets pumped up to 8.9 seconds with the 2.4L inline-4 engine. Depending on the powertrain, the Matrix hatchback can manage a combined fuel economy between 29 and 24 mpg. While we’re on the topic of choices, the 7 striking colors the Toyota Matrix hatchback comes in really pull you towards itself.

Buying Advice

We believe the S trim with a more powerful 2.4L inline-4 engine seems like the real deal just for an additional $1000 from the base trim. Apart from the powerful engine, it also opens the gate to features such as a premium audio system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen interface, 60/40-split-folding rear seats, metallic interior trim, foglights, and upgraded cloth upholstery.
