Overview

The 2021 Rolls Royce Cullinan is a proud member of the fullsize luxury SUV segment, locking horns with cars like Bentley Bentayga, the Mercedes Maybach GLS, and the Land Rover Range Rover SV Autobiography. With a standalone trim, the Cullinan starts off at a base price of MSRP $375,900. Its 6.75L twin-turbocharged V12 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission give the SUV 563 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. With that, it manages a 0-60 of 5.2 seconds and boasts a towing capacity of 7,275 pounds. Moving to fuel economy, the Cullinan manages to get a combined EPA rating of 14 MPG, which is just average for the class, with most of its rivals reaching similar numbers. It also has a ground clearance of 6.8 inches.

Buying Advice

The 2021 Cullinan does what Rolls Royce does best in a far more formidable manner. Its craftsmanship, attention to detail, and ride quality are bar none unparalleled in the industry. However rivals like Maybach GLS 600, and Bentayga offers a similar experience for half the price but lack the visual drama the Cullinan has with its suicide doors and spirit of ecstasy.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Cullinan, like every other Rolls-Royce, feels like a palace on wheels. It shines brightly amongst a crowd of super-capable SUVs from distinguished carmakers. It gets a potent V12 engine under its hood and keeping in mind power, performance, and pricing, it competes against the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, and Aston Martin DBX in its segment.

Features

The new Rolls-Royce Cullinan comes in two trim options. While the base variant that is priced at $330,000 in itself feels heavily equipped and carries a state-of-the-art stature, the Black Badge trim adds more power and features and is almost 50 grand more expensive than its base counterpart. As standard, the SUV gets class-leading specifications like a four-zone climate, adaptive cruise control, and heads-up display. For the purpose of this review, we only take into consideration the base variant, while the top-tier Black-badge trim will be separately reviewed.

Which Trim should you buy?

Available as a single trim offering only, we do not have much to suggest when it comes to the 2021 Cullinan and with the Rolls-Royce badge and the spirit of Ecstasy shining brightly, you’d seldom want to look at other SUVs. The base variant of the Cullinan is a package in itself, it’s a land-barge you do not want to miss out on. Power and performance are top-notch and undoubtedly luxury is held in the highest regard.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

As expected, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan performs underwhelmingly when fuel efficiency is concerned. Though it is not an outright guzzler, the SUV’s efficiency is rated at 12/20/14 MPG in the city, on the highway, and combined. However, its fuel tank is a saving grace and can hold 26.4-gallons, allowing it to average 369 combined miles.

In comparison, the 2021 Bentley Bentayga undoubtedly leads the segment with its highest combined efficiency of 18 MPG. However, it does not lead in terms of range, which feels surprising considering that it also sports a sizable fuel tank. On the other hand, the Lamborghini Urus manages similar efficiency as the Rolls-Royce, and despite the least voluminous tank 19.8-gallons has a better range to vaunt.

Interior
9.9/10

The 2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan gets adorned with all class-leading specifications like lambswool carpeting, wooden inserts, and premium upholstery that looks and feels appealing. There are a number of customization options available with the SUV, but even the factory-fitted elements would work wonders for traditional buyers. The cabin looks contemporary with a digital gauge cluster.

In terms of interior space and comfort, the 2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan can seat five passengers. While front seats feel plush and comfortable and bestow a leisurely experience, the rear seats feel rather flat and rigid. However, with the optional seat massage functionality, comfort can be improved manifold. On the other hand, the cargo capacity of 21 cu.-ft is adequate and class-competing. You get a wide opening trunk which makes accessibility easier and can fit almost two and a half luggage bags.

Like the Rolls-Royce, standard seating capacity is five passengers, while the space available on the inside is not specifically known. Each SUV sports a luxuriant cabin with all the luxuries you’d look for at the price point. Thus, the major point of contention here is the cargo capacity, which is the highest in the Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus of 22.3 and 21.8 cu.-ft, respectively. While Bentley lags considerably in this aspect. That said, some salient interior features of the 2021 Rolls Royce Cullinan include:

  • Dual-tone leather upholstery
  • Optional captain seats for the second row
  • Four-zone Climate control
  • External Temperature Display
  • Woodgrain interior trim

2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan Infotainment

The infotainment system available with the 2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan is distinct, intuitive, and appealing. It comes standard with a 12-inch screen with a controller mounted on the central console. It features Apple CarPlay connectivity and also comes with specifications like a Wi-Fi hotspot and a custom audio system with 18 speakers.

  • Voice Activated Radio
  • Satellite Radio Service
  • Wireless Phone Connectivity
  • Primary Monitor Touchscreen
  • Internet Access

Exterior
9.9/10

Grandiose, awe-inspiring, and resplendent are all synonyms to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Like every other vehicle from the brand, it is fitting for making grand entries and making an impression. The rectangular headlamp clusters, gleaming Pantheon grille, and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot give it a commanding appearance upfront. Given its SUV proportions and stance, the Cullinan is different from typical Rolls-Royce’s, however, one glimpse at the traditional rear suicide doors and you continue to fall in love with it.

The 2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan looks beefy and is the heaviest option in the segment with a curb weight of 5864 lbs. It is the longest option with a wheelbase of 130 inches that justifies the space on the inside. It stands taller than most of its competitors and its 22-inch alloy wheels with self-lighting provide it with a proportionate stance. It is 85 inches wide, while its ground clearance is not yet known.

In terms of design, it’s difficult to make a solid preference. If you like coupe SUVs with aggressive styling then the Lamborghini Urus makes for an undisputed choice. However, if soberness is the name of the game for you, then the 2021 Bentayga and DBX, are rather practical choices.

On the other hand, when dimensions are concerned, each contemporary SUV is smaller than the Rolls-Royce. However, the Bentley and Lamborghini stand higher from the ground with a clearance of almost 10 inches. Each SUV has a smaller wheelbase and even the Aston-Martin that ranks second is almost 10 inches shorter. Some salient exterior features include:

  • Coach Doors
  • Split Tailgate
  • LED head and taillamps
  • Hand-polished stainless steel front grille
  • Power Closing Doors

Safety
8.0/10

The 2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan bears a price tag over $300,000, which makes it clear that it will not be tested by the federal and non-federalagencies. Yet its standard features provide assurance of how the SUV will fare in this aspect. It comes with basic specifications like a surround camera, side collision beams, and low tire pressure alerts. Along with these fairly standard features, the 2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan also comes with a slew of additional top-of-the-line driver-assistance features, including automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Rolls-Royce Assist Emergency SOS
  • Front And Rear Parking Sensors
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Night Vision Assist

2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan VS 2021 Bentley Bentayga

The Bentley Bentayga and Rolls Royce Cullinan are the most closely matched luxury SUVs without a doubt. They look palatial and have striking exterior designs that are undoubtedly ostentatious. While the 2021 Bentayga is the better performer, the Cullinan comes with additional features and is uber-luxurious. However, it commands an insanely higher price tag and while the Bentley is also well-equipped, saving $100,000 will be beneficial. But if budget is no constraint, who would want to say no to a Rolls-Royce.

2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan VS 2021 Lamborghini Urus

Just like the Bentley, the Lamborghini feels more performance-focused. It also comes with a luxuriously appointed cabin, that is ergonomic and filled with niceties. However, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is the epitome of luxury and to beat the SUV in terms of luxury is next to impossible. Yet again, the Lamborghini Urus is considerably lower-priced, making it the more practical option.

2021 Rolls-Royce Cullinan VS 2021 Aston Martin DBX

The Aston Martin DBX perhaps is the most impractical competitor in the lot. But its sheer performance and a luxury brand name tag put it right in the competition. Though quicker, the Aston Martin does not stand ground against the Rolls-Royce, the latter feels like a mansion on wheels and has ample space, and is highly practical. Though it costs almost double than Aston Martin, the additional money spent on it is worth every penny.

Final Verdict

The new Rolls-Royce Cullinan reflects bespoke engineering and with its feature-load and unmatched luxury, redefines the standards of the segment. Its oneness lies in its practicality while being a true embodiment of refinement and sophistication. Given its potent powertrain and air suspension system, it works impressively both on and off the road. Though it is expensive, think of it as an investment that reaps benefits in luxury and stature.
