Porsche created a massive stir in the automotive world when it first introduced the Cayenne. Cayenne soon became a standard from premium luxury SUV thanks to its unique coupe design that has inspired many modern-day crossovers and it also offers practically unbeatable, superb performance in its category at that time. Cayenne has come a long way cementing itself as an icon in the market of luxury SUVs thanks to the precision German engineering and reliability.

Despite its German-built, the 2015 Cayenne was no stranger to problems. The 2015 Porsche Cayenne had two official recalls to its name and also racked up 9 official complaints. However, the complaints are quite low compared to other model years.

User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems

  • Engine- In a particular instance, the engine would not produce any power and the gears will not shift down in order to get the car to accelerate. There was no response from the throttle unless it was depressed fully to the floor. Then the car will jerk and accelerate uncontrollably. This creates an unsafe driving condition.
  • Wheel Alignment – Due to a manufacturing error, the alignment of the suspension for the front and rear were not done correctly. Also, it was noted that the screws for the camber, toe, and caster were not secure enough or not tightened with the administered torque value, resulting in the possibility of the suspension and axle separating.
  • Brake Clip – Some cars had a missing circlip in the brake pedal. This resulted in the brake pedal to get dislodged and braking failure. This posed a serious threat to life and property, especially in high-speed travel on the highway.

Electrical and Electronic Problems

  • Porsche Connect App Lockout- One complaint described how their Cayenne was locked by Porsche Connect, the service that requires the owner’s details. Upon enquiring with Porsche, it was revealed that since the original owner of the 2015 Cayenne had changed their number, the system declared the Cayenne to be stolen and was promptly locked.
  • Short Circuit- Some of the electrical systems were short-circuited resulting in the tailgate being opened automatically while driving, spilling contents onto the roadway. The short circuit also resulted in false warning of deflated tires, a warning that the right rear tail light was defective, and numerous navigation functionality faults.

Exterior Problems

  • Panoramic roof- In a particular instance, the panoramic glass roof spontaneously exploded while driving. Upon inspection, the dealership found out that it may be due to a rock that hit the glass while driving.

Safety Problems

  • Desiccated Airbag Inflator Rupture – An investigation was opened with regards to the company Takata, specializing in making inflators for airbags. The company makes use of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L, which under high temperature and humidity over a long period of time, can degrade and become dangerously volatile. This would cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, therefore having the potential to cause serious injuries to occupants in the vehicle.

Recalls

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne has two recalls to its name; both of them were due to manufacturing errors. Apart from that, the vehicle is also part of an open investigation regarding Takata Airbag recall where the airbag inflator would rupture.

Missing Brake Pedal Clip may cause Loss of Braking

Brake pedal pivot pin may be missing a circlip, allowing the pivot pin to move and the brake pedal to dislodge.

Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake pedal assembly circlip, installing any missing circlips, free of charge.

Front and Rear Alignment may be Incorrect

Due to a manufacturing error, the suspension alignment on the front and rear axles may not have been performed correctly and the screw connections of the camber, toe, and caster may not have been tightened with the specified torque.

Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will perform a front and rear suspension alignment, and check the screw connections for the proper torque, retightening as necessary, free of charge.

Should you buy the 2015 Porsche Cayenne?

Given the track record of the nameplate, the 2015 Cayenne is a relatively reliable crossover. It has very few recalls and complaints to its name. On that note, it is important to remember that there is an ongoing investigation regarding the airbags used in the 2015 Cayenne. But they probably have been changed. However, it is always safe to check the service records before buying a used 2015 Porsche Cayenne.
