Overview

The 2012 Porsche Cayman is a compact coupe offered in 4 trims, starting off at a base MSRP of $51,900. For that price, it mainly competes with the Chevrolet Corvette and the Audi TT S. Between 4 trims, the Cayman offers 2 powertrains. The base engine is a 2.9-liter horizontally opposed flat 6 engine capable of making 265 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. If more power is required, there is also a 320 horsepower-making 3.4L flat-six engine. The Cayman R gets the same 3.4L flat-six engine however tuned for 330 horsepower. Both engines are mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission with an option for a 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission known as Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). The Cayman reaches 60 mph from zero in 5.5 seconds on its base engine, which gets pumped up to 4.9 seconds with the 3.4L flat-six engine. Depending on the powertrain, Cayman can manage a combined fuel economy between 21 and 22 mpg. While we’re on the topic of choices, the 18 striking colors, the Cayman comes in really pull you towards itself.

Buying Advice

Unlike its rivals, Porsche offers Cayman in four different exciting configurations. To have the definitive Porsche experience, the all-new Cayman R trim is the one with the True Porsche DNA in it. For starters, it gets the most powerful 3.4L flat-six engine with 330 horsepower on demand. Moreover, it adds some 19-inch wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, lightweight sport seats, the sport steering wheel, a lowered sport-tuned suspension, and exterior-paint-matching interior trim.
