Nissan is known for making a wide range of vehicles starting from compact city cars to big pickup trucks. To have a share of the huge market of compact crossovers, Nissan curated the Kicks for the urban folks. A cheap price tag, a spacious cabin, generous fuel economy figures, and a plethora of standard interior and driver-assist techs are the driving force of the Kicks. It starts at a base price of $19,990, going all the way up to $22,550.

2022 Nissan Kicks

Since its launch, the Nissan Kicks faced several issues with its powertrain and driver-assist systems. However, the number of complaints is moderate while its rivals have recorded fewer complaints such as the Hyundai Venue, the Kia Seltos, and the Honda HR-V. Overall, the Kicks manages to be at par with the competition in terms of reliability.

2022 Nissan Kicks User Complaints and Problems

Being a brand-new product from the Japanese carmaker, the 2022 Nissan Kicks does have quite a few problems. The 2022 Kicks haven’t received any recalls or complaints as of now and the 2021 model has faced a few complaints to date. The common Nissan Kicks issues include engine stalling problems and advanced driver-assist malfunction problems.

2022 Nissan Kicks

The automatic emergency braking system malfunction affected both 2018 and 2019 models of the Kicks while the engine stalling issues plagued the aforementioned model years too. The number of complaints is quite limited and the overall numbers saw a sharp decline in the 2021 model year of the SUV.

Engine problems

  • Random engine stall: This issue affected quite many vehicles from the 2018 to 2019 model years. Even the 2020 Kicks also faced several complaints regarding the random engine shutdown issue. Due to lack of inspections, the exact reason behind the problem is still not known, however, the 2021 Kicks recorded only a single complaint that mentioned the engine shutdown event along with a few other problems. The 2022 model didn’t face any complaints yet.
  • Laggy acceleration or no acceleration from engine: A few models of the 2020 Nissan Kicks faced this issue. The reports mentioned that while driving if the vehicle is stopped for a brief moment, it would hesitate to accelerate.
  • Rough idling of the engine and grinding noise from transmission: A single complaint mentioning the car shutdown issue additionally mentioned rough idling and transmission grinding. More than a couple of complaints were registered against the 2019 Kicks where it mentioned that the CVT unit would slip, resulting in a sudden engine stall in some cases.

Safety problems

  • Automatic emergency braking system malfunction: This problem has been present right from the launch model year of the Nissan Kicks. Several owners complained about the system malfunctioning. In some of the cases, the vehicles were brand new or with a few thousand miles on the odometer. A majority of the reports stated that the system would activate randomly, slowing down the vehicle while driving, even at highway speeds. In a few instances, the system failed to get activated. An isolated report mentioned that the system malfunctions by coming on whenever the owner drove the vehicle facing the sun.

Electrical problems

  • Infotainment and reverse camera issue: A few Nissan Kicks models from the 2018 and 2019 model years faced issues with their electrical systems apart from the automatic emergency braking system malfunction. A couple of complaints mentioned that the infotainment system would behave erratically. The radio would shut down randomly and while playing audio, the system would skip five seconds of the playing track. A single report stated that while reversing, the rearview camera would go dark.

2022 Nissan Kicks recalls

The 2022 Nissan Kicks didn’t face any recalls or complaints as of now and we expect it to remain this way. Several vehicles from the previous models years such as the 2018 and 2019, faced quite a bit of complaints regarding the driver assist systems but the brand never issues a single recall regarding it. The engine stalling issues along with the transmission issues also never saw a single recall however, it seems that Nissan has been fixing it silently with successive model years. Since its launch, the Kicks only received a single recall for the rearview camera display going blank issue.

What model year of the Nissan Kicks to avoid?

The Nissan Kicks, since its launch, has managed to attract a fair number of buyers. Despite the SUV facing the notorious engine stalling issue, transmission issue, and driver-assist malfunctioning issues, the sales number increased at a steady pace. Moreover, the affected number of vehicles was not that high as well. However, we would suggest avoiding the 2018 and 2019 model years of the Nissan Kicks since the number of problems was comparatively higher in these model years.

Should you buy a used Nissan Kicks?

If you manage to find a 2021 Nissan Kicks at a decent price tag, why not. The cheap price tag, impressive fuel economy, and spacious cabin have been some of the vehicle’s forte and its compact dimensions make it a perfect city companion as well. The Honda HR-V is a brilliant alternative to the Kicks, in case you’re interested in something other than the latter.
