Overview

The 2014 Nissan Frontier is one very capable truck that has been a prominent sight for a long time now. With minor changes over the years, the truck has remained the same in its design and styling since some time now. It is powered by a pretty capable inline-4 and also has a strong V6 available. The features list is pretty strong for the price and the added capability makes it an even more lucrative offer for the intended crowd.

Buying Advice

The Nissan Frontier gets all the features that one’d need in a truck this capable but the best value for money trim is the Pro-4X which gets all the required features and also brings in a lot of off-roading prowess for the people to enjoy.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2014 Nissan Frontier doesn’t get any major changes and remains the same. The MSRPs see a minimal hike and the list now starts at $22,550 while the competition remains the same, albeit for a new model year. For the new readers, the Frontier’s rivals include the Honda Ridgeline and the Toyota Tacoma

Features
8.0/10

The 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab gets a MSRP of $22,550 for the base trim and comprises 5 trims - S, SV, Desert Runner, Pro-4X and SL - all of which provide a good pack of features and options at their respective price points. For the standard features, the truck gets front bucket seats with a flat-folding front-passenger seat, rear privacy glass, and cloth upholstery. The other trims add a lot of creature comfort features like 5.8-inch touchscreen display and traffic data, power-adjustable front seats with heating, dual-zone automatic climate control, and sunroof.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab gets a couple of engine options for its duties. The base engine is a 2.5L four-cylinder which is rated at 152 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission which sends all the power to the rear wheels only, as standard. One can also go for an optional five-speed automatic with this engine that makes driving easy in busy areas. The other engine option on offer is a 4.0L V6 rated at 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque which can be had with either a six-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic which sends power to all the four wheels as standard.

As for the acceleration, the inline-4 under the hood is rather sluggish and completes the quarter-mile in 18.1 seconds, whereas the sprint to 60 MPH takes 10.7 seconds. The more powerful V6 does the deeds in a rather quick 15.2 seconds and 7.6 seconds respectively.

The Honda Ridgeline is the only truck here that comes with a V6 as its standard engine, while the other two have a more efficient inline-4 on offer. The Frontier’s base engine is the slowest in the competition and is also the least powerful. The Tacoma's results are no good either but it does better in terms of acceleration when compared to the Frontier. The V6 counterparts of the Taco and the Frontier make very similar acceleration when compared to a Ridgeline.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab’s base engine is an inline-4 and the engine is a rather impressive mill when it comes to providing a fuel-efficient experience without having a sluggish pace. The EPA rates this engine at 19 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway, for 21 MPG combined from a 21.1 gallon fuel tank. Opting for the more powerful V6 eats a MPG or two across scenarios, but remains pretty frugal nonetheless.

The bigger V6 on the Honda sips more fuel than the others’ inline-4 mills, obviously, but still provides decent range from the biggest tank in the segment. The Nissan and the Toyota share very similar tank capacities and fuel-economy figures, with the latter being a bit more fuel-efficient on the highways.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab gets a pretty basic interior at its base trims which looks rugged but has a lot of hard plastics being used on commonly-touched areas, making it a bit difficult for the people to get comfortable inside. The case gets better as the trim levels are upgraded but the increase in comfort isn’t much since the overall material quality is not comparable to what the rivals, like the Honda Ridgeline, offer. There are a lot of cubby spaces inside which helps get things arranged pretty well.

The seats inside are comfortable and have vinyl upholstery as standard, while the subsequent upgrades include cloth and leather upholstery. The seating area in the seats is pretty soft and the support is okayish, in case you try to drive enthusiastically. The higher trims also add in power adjustability and heating for added comfort. The rear seating area is comfortable but the position of the seats is rather uncomfortable and the person sits upright, which makes for an uncomfortable long drive.

The Frontier has a pretty spacious cabin at the front but the rear is not really what one would call comfortable. The seating position is rather upright and the tight shoulder room and legroom add to the woes. If one wants a comfy cabin, the Honda Ridgeline is the truck you should be going for because of the premium quality inside, right from the base trim, and the materials used inside. The only caveat is the cargo capacity which is pretty low for a truck.

Some of the highlighting features of the Nissan’s cabin are:

  • Sunroof
  • Rear-seat center armrest
  • Heated power front seats
  • Vinyl/cloth/leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Keyless entry
  • Sliding rear window

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab?

The 2014 Nissan Frontier gets a 4.3-inch color display as standard which is a rather colorful unit and has built-in navigation. It also has application support built-in which includes SiriusXM traffic updates, voice commands, and some other Nissan proprietary apps. Apart from this, the unit also supports Bluetooth and comes with a CD player as well. The Pro-4X gets a bigger unit for the touchscreen but the overall functionality remains the same. The music is played via a four-speaker setup as standard, which can be upgraded to a 6-speaker unit or a 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system. Some of the highlighting features include:

  • 4.3-inch color display or 5.8-inch touchscreen display
  • Satellite radio
  • USB/iPod integration
  • Navigation
  • Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity
  • Voice control
  • Smartphone app integration

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab carries all the traditional lines from the headlight housing to the front bumpers and the sides as well. The front bumpers house the fog lights (for the supported trims) and have a big vent for the air to flow in. The front grille is adequately sized and has the V-shape front grille. The hood is straightforward and has just two bodylines which gives a raised midsection look.

The wheels on the Frontier vary from 15-inch steel wheels to 18-inch alloy wheels and the designs of all the alloy wheels suit the truck pretty well. The flares look extended and have a rugged look to them. There is a running board on either side which affects the ground clearance but also helps in onboarding the truck. There is a small design element that stretches across the doors. At the rear, the design is pretty simple with the usual badging done. The rear bumper has step-ins to help climb inside, and the tucked-in exhaust pipe completes the looks of the truck.

The Toyota Tacoma is the lightest of all the trucks in the segment and also is the longest, which helps create space inside the cabin. It has the most ground clearance as well as the longest wheelbase which helps in improving the ride quality and also while off the road. The Ridgeline is the heaviest with all the comfort it carries inside and is the widest, making up quite some shoulder room inside. The shortest wheelbase here also helps the Honda to be nimble around the corners and not be a hassle to drive.

Some of the highlighting styling features are:

  • 15-/16-inch steel wheels
  • 16-/18-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Sliding rear window
  • Fog lights
  • Automatic headlights
  • Underbody skid plates (Desert Runner and Pro-4X)
  • Bilstein shocks (Desert Runner and Pro-4X)

Safety
7.0/10

The 2014 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab comes equipped with all the standard safety tech that is mandated by the authorities while also carrying a solid chassis and durable body panels to help in case of a crash. The chassis is strong but has been made light to keep the weight in check. If opting for the V6, the models get more goodies by way of brake-actuated limited-slip differential. As for the crash test ratings, the report is positive from both the agencies, which also adds to the peace of mind. Some of the highlighting safety features include:

  • Cruise control
  • Stability control
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Auto-dimming rear-view mirror
  • Auto-dimming rear-view camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Electronic brakeforce distribution
  • Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

Final Verdict

The 2014 Nissan Frontier is getting old and the age is pretty evident inside with the practical cabin and subpar quality of materials but the space inside is rather good with comfortable seating in the front row. The design looks very familiar and there’s not much difference in subsequent model years but the design looks rugged and has a no-crap approach. The handling is good and the base engine does a good job but the V6 does a better job of doing the task making it a good option for someone who needs a barebones truck.

              Great gas mileage

Pros - ["Lots of room", "Great gas mileage"]

Cons - ["There is so much room I've missed place things", "I have to wash it"]

For a smaller truck its like having a large one because of all the room for people, pets and stuff. Great for travel and quick trips. There are no blind sides when driving or changing lanes and I feel safe.
