The 2021 Honda Civic Type R is a much sportier and bolder version of the Honda Civic. It gets a more powerful 306-hp engine, aggressive appearance, dual-tone interior, and subtle touches that position itself as a car that is exciting to drive as well as suitable for practical needs. Honda has a history of making dependable and practical cars, and that is why the Civic Type R is a departure from the usual Honda progeny. Moreover, there is a limited edition Type R with only 1000 cars produced.

The Civic Type R is one of the quickest sport hatchbacks in the market. But it also delivers reliability, comfort, and safety. The car has had 0 recalls yet. It has received 22 user complaints as per the NHTSA, which are limited to only a few recurrent issues.

2021 Honda Civic Type R User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Suspension - One consumer reported a clunking noise from the rear suspension whenever the car runs over a bump. It happens every time irrespective of the speed of the car.
  • Steering - One user complained of a steering wheel malfunction on a highway after all the instrumentation and power steering were switched off at once. Small steering movements resulted in violent jerks and the car needed to be stopped.

Safety Problems

  • Driver assistance features - Multiple owners complained of the Forward collision system being falsely activated and applying emergency brakes without an imminent threat to the car. This happens out of nowhere and has resulted in crash-like situations in a few cases. Some owners preferred to switch off the assist features after these incidents as it could cause a crash which shows a lack of reliability on this feature. This has been the most common complaint with the 2021 Civic Type R.

Exterior Problems

  • Lighting - One owner complained that the headlights are on the dim side. It needs to provide better illumination and could be a safety issue on roads that are not lit properly. All LX, Sport, and EX variants have the same dim lights while only the LED version has great illumination.

Electrical Problems

  • Warning lights - One user reported that while on a multi-lane freeway, the speedometer suddenly read 0 while the car was running on the highway, and warning lights for power steering, emergency braking, suspension, and many other systems started flashing.
  • Rearview camera - One user reported that while turning in reverse there is no blind spot alert warning. This usually happens when the car is turning left. This could cause a crash if the driver is dependent on the camera.
  • Many owners have complained of inadequate protection from rodents. The cables are apparently insulated with a soy-based material that attracts small rodents that end up chewing and damaging the cables in a matter of hours. This caused many features like the steering, lights, and other assist features to stop functioning. Owners have the opinion that even though this is a design flaw in the car the repair cost had to be borne by the owner.
