For more than a decade, the Japanese automaker Honda has delivered the Civic as an affordable and reliable compact car and the Type-R is the more focused and performance-oriented version of the icon we've all come to know and love. While the Type-R has had its fair share of criticism with its aggressive design and lackluster interiors, it definitely comes off as an intriguing option for buyers who want a daily commuter that doesn't compromise on performance.

But is the 2019 Honda Civic Type-R a reliable car? To answer that, here we take a look at the Civic Type-R and its problems, user complaints, and recalls.

2019 Honda Civic Type-R User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - An owner complained that they had experienced water entering from the hood scoop and dripping onto the 4th cylinder causing the coils and spark plug to rust which in turn caused the check engine light to come on. Another owner complained about the engine wire hardness being bitten by rodents twice in two years because Honda uses soy-based wires.
  • Powertrain - Another owner complained about the possibility of the vehicle being powered off while in reverse. This could cause the vehicle to roll away. The issues stay unresolved.
  • Suspension - One owner complained about weird noise coming from the driver's side. The owner stated that the sound felt like metal rubbing with the car.

Safety Problems

  • Air Bags - An owner complained that they had been experiencing some rickety, creaking sound coming from their steering wheel's airbag module. The car has been taken to the dealership five times and they replaced the airbag module but the problem still persists.
  • Seatbelts - One owner complained that while putting on their seatbelt, the seatbelt failed to latch without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealership yet the issue was not resolved.

Should you buy the 2019 Honda Civic Type-R?

The 2019 Honda Civic Type-R is pretty reliable for a performance-oriented compact car. According to the NHTSA, the Civic Type-R has only 2 recalls and 112 user complaints, most of which are related to the electrical system and service brakes. In terms of competition, the 2019 Civic Type-R is much more refined than most of its rivals, although it may have limited features. Overall we would definitely recommend you to go ahead with the Type-R if you're looking for some thrill in your daily driving but its over-the-top design and the interior color scheme might be off-putting for some buyers.
