If you own a Ford Fusion get rid of it NOW. The engine block is about to Crack and the FORD MOTOR COMPANY IS WELL AWARE OF THIS. It happened to me. I have been a loyal Ford owner for over 25 years. Traded one Ford for another. When I called Ford MotorRead More

... that car - google class action lawsuit - transmission ford focus). The ride is not bad though on the Fusion - just okay. I would not recommend it for long trips because the rear suspension seems to be partially sport tuned and stiff and you can feel the whole car rattle from the back on some that you hit. Also the front drivers seat lacks some support. Now you know why it's cheaper than it's competitors. One of the big downersRead More

Although the sedan segment is dying, there are quite a few cars in the midsize economy sedan segment. The 2016 Ford Fusion is one of them but it is a car that has reported 797 complaints and was recalled 8 times in total this year. Some of the most common issues are Ford Fusion transmission problems, engine problems, electrical issues, and so on. Starting at an MSRP of $23,085, it competes against the likes of the Hyundai Sonata, the Honda Accord, and the Toyota Camry. Read more about Ford Fusion problems below, of which there are plenty.

2016 Ford Fusion User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  • The worst Ford Fusion engine problem and also one of the most common ones are the coolant intrusion into the engine. The issue is that the block is made of two materials that have two different melting points and hence the engine block will expand at different rates in different areas. The result in most cases catastrophic failure and was the majority of cars have been affected.
  • Many owners have complained that the engines have overheated even though there are no leaks or other problems. This results in the engine shutting down and not starting back up. In many cases, there are associated head gasket failures as well.
  • Many owners have also complained about the transmission of the car having an issue with the bushing breaking. Although several cars are affected many are not covered in the Ford Fusion transmission recall.
  • One of the Ford Fusion's common problems is associated with the shifter cable as well. It breaks in half and although the repair is cheap, the problem is usually followed by a complete transmission failure. This will result in the car being shifted to Park according to the owner and as per the gear lever but being stuck in neutral, reverse or drive.
  • A common area of failure has seemed to be the flex plate cracking. The repair is quite expensive and many owners have had to replace it.
  • Multiple cases of the exhaust emitting white smoke have also been recorded and the issue could be related to the spark plugs or the ignition coils.
  • One of the most common problems is a 2016 Ford Fusion steering assist fault. The steering wheel becomes slightly sticky and loses power assist slowly. This makes the car quite hard to maneuver and causes immediate safety risks.
  • The starter system in the car is also a known fault and fails to start the vehicle properly. Battery problems are also prevalent in this car and you will find no shortage of them either.
  • Several complaints about the throttle body of this car have also been registered. The control system responsible for maintaining the position of the throttle body according to driver input is notably error-prone.
  • A large number of cars have had catastrophic engine failures due to connecting rods breaking loose. Even with meticulous maintenance, this kind of issue happens.
  • Many cars have also stalled and vibrated to a stop. At this point, sometimes the car starts back up but in other cases, it leads to catastrophic engine failure.
  • Multiple complaints about the transmission system of this car have also been registered. It fails to shift smoothly and also acts confused between several gears.
  • There are many complaints about the car accelerating independently and crashing into different places.
  • Fuel leaks are also quite common and a gas smell inside the car usually indicates it.
  • There have also been quite a few complaints about the Ford Fusion generating a check engine light due to some common faults associated with the canister purge valves and the engine going into limp mode.
  • There are a few instances of Ford Fusion brake problems as well. Usually, the brake pedal stops responding due to a fault with the vacuum pump. It can also be due to faulty brake hoses. The car can also lock up due to a wiring issue.
  • Both the tires that come with the car - Michelin and Goodyear have issues with sidewall bulging and tired tread separation.
  • The lug nuts of the car are also prone to getting swollen, making it hard to remove the wheels. It is a very common issue.

Electrical system problems:

  • The Sync system used for infotainment is also prone to many complaints and frequently gets disconnected. Many owners have also complained that the speakers blast a sudden screech that is deafening and then shut themselves off completely.
  • Several electrical systems in the car have thrown up warnings and malfunctioned. The issue is quite common and multiple fault codes are issued, causing trouble to owners because these issues affect the climate control system, radio, seat controls, power windows, and so on.
  • The horn is also another known problem area because it operates on its own without any input from the driver in multiple cars.
  • The backup camera in this car has failed to work for many owners. It starts to not work intermittently until it gives up completely. The instrument panel has also malfunctioned and completely given out in many cars.
  • The HVAC system has reported several faults including the AC stopping to work as well as the heating and cooling functions on the seats. According to research, it could be a fault with the accessory protocol interface module.
  • Some owners have had warnings that the hood was open even when it was closed.
  • Many cars have also gone up in flames spontaneously due to causes unknown to the manufacturer.
  • There are many unexpected problems with this car such as the windows rolling down on their own. The center console buttons have also stopped working in many cars. Problems like these seem to affect a lot of people.
  • Other owners have had the trunk open randomly. It seems to be a common issue that has affected a large number of cars.
  • Several cars have the power adjustment of the seat malfunctioning. Other issues include the base of the seats moving.

Safety problems:

  • There are quite a few complaints about the airbags of this vehicle producing a warning sign that does not go away despite repairs. The occupant detection system is a common area of failure.
  • Many owners have reported that the airbags failed to deploy in situations where they could have saved lives.
  • Several active safety features including pre-collision assist and lane-keep assist seem to malfunction in this car. Complaints are also reported about the blind spot monitoring system, and cross-traffic alert system, generating failures intermittently.
  • The seat belts of this car are also prone to locking in place and being hard to engage and disengage. It also fails to retract properly.
  • Safety systems like ABS, traction control, hill start assist, and so on are also known to malfunction regularly.

Exterior problems:

  • Multiple cars have had issues with the undercarriage detaching from the body. This causes accidents because it can hit the ground and affect the stability of the car.
  • The door locks of this car also have the issue of not closing properly. The doors may come open at this point.
  • There are many complaints about the headlights of this car not illuminating the road properly when driving at night.
  • Multiple complaints regarding water leaks have also been recorded and the main problem media seems to be from the trunk.
  • There seem to be chassis alignment issues in some cars which leads the rear of the car to vibrate violently.

Miscellaneous problems:

  • Multiple complaints about the manufacturer not making parts for the recall available on time have been registered.
  • Many users have complained that the windshield wipers of the car are not fast enough.

Should you buy the 2016 Ford Fusion?

The 2016 Ford Fusion is a terrible car and we would urge you to not buy one. This car has issues that are spread across all systems and parts that have been used in the car and hence, it is very hard to find any single merit about it. It is so bad that if the sedan segment is dying in America, this car has to take some blame for it. The 2016 Honda Accord is a much better car that will give you headache-free maintenance as well.
