Overview

The Dodge Challenger maintains a retro aesthetic with a packaging that is more geared toward classic car enthusiasts and people who are into street modifications. The Challenger will be offered in a total of 11 trims with various engine configurations and styling. The base engine in these non-SRT Challengers is a V-6, but the naturally aspirated Hemi V-8 engines will be available in a range of displacements and outputs from a 375-hp, 5.7-liter engine to a 485-hp, 6.4-liter engine. The base trim price starts from $30,823 and goes all the way up to a whopping $85,620 for the SRT jailbreak edition. It could be a bit confusing to choose given the fact there are multiple trims in various drivetrain options.

Buying Advice

We would definitely recommend the Challenger GT RWD as it offers a more comprehensive set of features and slap with it, the plus and driver convenience package to get the best value out of the Challenger.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The styling will remain unchanged from the previous year’s models with its muscular body design and the ovaled-off long trim which runs from one end of the car to the other. The round headlight has been integrated into the front grille which adds a realtor look to the car. Although the standard Challenger lacks the outlandish Hellcat's ferocity, for some people its V-6 gurgle and generally smooth ride will be enough to bring back memories of the classic muscle car of America. These will be the last of the challengers to be produced and after December 2023, Dodge bids adieu to one of its iconic cars ever built. It competes against its arch rivals the Chevrolet Camaro, and the Ford Mustang GT.

Features
7.0/10

The 2023 Dodge challenger will be the last of the iconic cars and is expected to be offered in a total of 11 trims at different engine configurations. The base trim starts at an MSRP of $30,825 and will go up all the way to $85,620 for the Jailbreak trim. In our comparison, we are only taking the SXT and GT trim as they both come with the same engine configurations. Both have the option of choosing from real-wheel and all-wheel drivetrain options. Let us compare these trims and find out which better suits our likings.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

The Dodge Challenger is not the most fuel-efficient car in the segment but neither is it the least fuel efficient. The 3.5 Litre V6 engine does a good job and returns 19 MPG in the city, and 30 MPG on highways, for a combined fuel economy of 23 MPG. It has an adequate fuel tank capacity of 18.6 gallons which gives it a range of 352 miles on the city, 555 miles on the highway, and a combined figure of 425 miles which is one of the best in the segment.

The Mustang GT returns the best MPG figures in the city followed by a tie between the Camaro and Challenger. On the highway, the Challenger returns a fuel efficiency of 30 miles per gallon which is the best in the segment. With a combined MPG of 24 the Mustang leads the pack followed by the Challenger and the Camaro. In terms of range, the Mustang falls short by close to 100 miles due to its lowest fuel tank capacity in the segment at 15.5 gallons.

Interior
6.0/10

The interior of the Dodge Challenger is simple and has a clean appearance but the interior feels outdated. The fit and finish are average with plastic touch materials nothing to complain about nor praiseworthy. The seat offers ample comfort for longer drives, the driver seat is 6-way power adjustable whereas the passenger would get a 4-way manual adjustment. The houndstooth cloth seat comes as standard but is upgradable to a Nappa leather seat for an additional price. The interior space on the front row is not bad with the best in segment headroom and shoulder space. The second row is also spacious with legroom of 33.1 inches. The cargo space is also quite lavish considering the type of car the Challenger is, It gets a cargo space of 16.2 cubic feet.

The Camaro gets the smallest cargo space with a capacity of only 9.1 cubic feet

The body color exterior mirror and door handle add to its single-body look. The Dodge Challenger has a total length of 197.9 inches and is wider by 75.7 inches. Compared to the competition the Challenger is the longest, widest and tallest which makes it slightly muscular than its competitor. One drawback is the longer wheelbase which affects the maneuverability of the car in tight spaces but provides more high-speed stability. The Camaro has the lowest ground clearance at 4.5 inches. The Mustang is the heaviest at 4089 lbs.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • Front and Rear Solar Control Glass
  • Center High-Mount Stop Lamp
  • Automatic Projector Headlamps
  • Illuminated Entry
  • LED Split Tail Lamps
  • Rear Body-Color Spoiler
  • Dual Bright Exhaust Tips
  • Variable Intermittent Windshield Wipers
  • Non-Locking Fuel-Filler Cap

Safety
4.0/10

The Dodge Challenger gets a host of safety features as standard which makes it a safe car in its segment. It s equipped with most of the safety features one can find in a modern car like the all-speed traction control, electronic roll mitigation, electronic stability control, and rearview backup camera. Apart from this, the Challenger is also equipped with advanced multi-stage airbags, side-mounted curtain airbags, and supplemental front seat airbags which improve occupant safety in an event of a crash.

The NHTSA has not rated the 2023 Dodge Challenger. The only rating available on the NHTSA website is for the 2020 Dodge Challenger which has an overall crash test rating of 5 stars. In individual crash tests, the frontal impact score is at 4 stars, side impact is a 5-star rating. This rating would only improve with the additional safety features included with the newer models.

Other standout safety features include:

  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Hill-Start Assist
  • Security Alarm
  • Speed Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring Display
  • 3-Point Center Rear Seat Belt
  • Child-Seat Upper-Tether Anchorages

Competition

2023 Dodge Challenger vs 2022 Ford Mustang GT

Among these two, the Ford Mustang is unquestionably the better option. It has a powerful engine that provides quick acceleration and outstanding fuel efficiency. It has some of the best handling and ride quality in the market. The interior of the Challenger is of lower quality and sophistication than that of the Mustang. But for those looking for a 5-seater family car with good interior space and cargo space, we feel the Challenger would be the ideal choice.

2023 Dodge Challenger vs 2022 Chevrolet Camaro

Due to its low curb weight, the Chevrolet Camaro is significantly more maneuverable than the Challenger despite having less power. Its handling is also more precise. The Challenger earns more points thanks to its larger interior, larger trunk, and practical safety features. But for those on a tight budget, the Camaro's lower sticker price than the Challenger might be a deal-breaker to own a Challenger.

Final Verdict

The 2023 Dodge challenger will be the last of the iconic muscle cars that are going to be built in the Brampton factory. The Dodge Challenger has a long history as a street muscle car that is capable of many aftermarket modifications. The car has almost a cult-like status on the American streets. We feel the Dodge Challenger 2023 will have quite a high dealer markup which could shoot the price of the vehicle a bit as many Challenger fans would try to own this iconic piece. We believe the 2023 model wouldn’t have many drastic changes as announced in the Dodge speed week apart from getting a badge on the engine compartment and the introduction of new colors. We would say it would be a safer bet not to upgrade to a 2023 Dodge Challenger model year if you are owning one from the past five years. With regards to the competitors, the Mustang GT and Camaro have been shredding their muscle car looks to more toned supercar versions. The Mustang comes out as the clear winner in terms of performance, ride quality, fuel economy, and interior built quality but the Challenger is a close second and we wouldn’t recommend buying against it.
