No type of car has managed to capture the attention of the American public as much as muscle cars have. The appeal of American cars around the world is itself associated with these cars. The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the latest performance bargain in this department. It is not bigger than a small economy car but packs some serious punch when compared to anything else. For the brand that has consistently improved upon its products and introduced new and exciting ones, we believe this car is one of the greatest of its creations.

Although it has jaw-dropping good looks, what it lacks has more to do with practicality. Camaros have managed to capture an audience that looks beyond such aspects. Being a very capable sports car, the prices are not cheap - they start at an MSRP of $63,000 and can go up significantly as you go through the extensive options list. For this price, what you get is performance that some of its rivals can only dream about. It competes against the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Let us see how the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 performs in this segment.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 User Complaints and Problems

As a manufacturer, Chevrolet built its reputation based on making products that appeal to most people in the United States and by providing an extensive service network that makes maintaining their cars very easy. Since the current generation Chevrolet Camaro was introduced in 2016, we have significant data about complaints that have been registered by users. However, these complaints are not about the ZL1 in specific, but the Chevrolet Camaro line-up in general. We cannot have an accurate picture but still, it would be the closest data source we will have and is understandable considering the two cars share some parts. Let us take a look at the most common ZL1 problems below:

Mechanical problems:

  1. One owner reported of a pungent smell of oil that causes nausea and a burning sensation in the eyes when driving. The car was taken to three separate dealerships but there was no solution found.
  2. Another owner has reported problems with the transmission system of the car. The transmission starts slipping and is all over the place when upshifting or downshifting. The transmission then failed when the car only had 426 miles on it.

Safety problems:

  1. One owner reported that the airbags failed to deploy during the event of a crash. The crash was caused intentionally by another road user and occurred on the side of the car which sustained serious damage.

There are very few complaints recorded about the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and this is a reassuring sign that the car has not had any major problems. However, as we have mentioned, we have included complaints from the entire Chevrolet Camaro line-up as well which we think would apply through shared parts in the Camaro ZL1. Some issues seem to be quite significant and need to be taken up by Chevrolet.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Recalls

Looking at the complaints history of the Chevrolet Camaro, one begins to feel that it is a dependable car but it has its share of problems as well. Every car will have its set of problems and owners will learn to navigate through them by raising concerns. We can see that the 2022 model of the Chevrolet Camaro has not reported any problems yet but the 2021 model year has.

Understandably, the car has recalls and one only needs to know whether they have adequately covered all the problem areas in the particular car. It is too early to comment on the 2022 model year as the cars have just been released. However, we can have data from previous years and take a look at the recalls from the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro. There were years when the car had issues like 2017 ZL1 problems but the manufacturer has made sure to come out in better form after resolving the issues.

One can see that the brand has issued a good number of recalls but some of the more pressing issues that have been addressed by the owners have not found solutions yet. We hope that Chevrolet is still investigating these matters and that a solution will be found soon.

Which model year of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 should you avoid?

The current generation of the Chevrolet Camaro was only introduced in 2016 and hence has gone through many model years. This generation was quite a notorious one in terms of reliability when it debuted back in 2016. It had a large number of complaints in the first two model years but then, it dropped significantly. If we had to tell you any model years that you are supposed to avoid, it would be all model years between 2010 and 2017.

During these years, we see problems like the 2010 Camaro timing chain recall as well as the 2015 Camaro radio problems. These issues are small but some of the problems during these years are not exactly easy to solve. Hence, the better idea is to look for a model year that is not notorious for creating maintenance headaches.

Should you buy the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1?

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is one of the most attractive sports cars we have around. It is not only strapped to a big V-8 engine, but also equally capable when it comes to driving dynamics and all other aspects of good sports cars. It also has decent interior quality and a large number of features. We are happy to report that in terms of reliability, it scores well apart from certain model years. Hence, this is a car we would recommend you buy in 2022.
