Chevrolet as a brand is a brand known by families as well as the performance market. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is a souped-up version of the regular Camaro that has managed to impart all the reliable qualities that the brand is known for within this compact coupe form factor. Chevrolet managed to sell almost 30,000 units of the Camaros in 2020 and that for a performance vehicle is an impressive number, suggesting how easy the vehicle is to maintain. With total registered complaints of 7 and just 2 recalls, there aren't a lot of factors stopping someone from picking the ZL1.

However, constant issues regarding the interior lights not turning off and the car failing to respond when gas is applied makes the 2020 Camaro ZL1 look less desirable when compared to alternatives such as the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, the Ford Shelby GT350, and the Mercedes AMG C 63. The Youtuber "Leaman Griffin" shares his views on his beloved Camaro ZL1. Check out the video below and read ahead to find out if this Chevy is the one for you.

Mechanical Problems

  • Brakes – It was reported that the brake pedal on the Camaro ZL1 would occasionally feel loose and go all the way to the floor without any resistance. This was a very dangerous situation to be in and the dealers immediately took action into resolving the issue. It was said that the dead brake pedal was a symptom of a failing brake booster and that it needed to be replaced.

Electrical Problems

  • Interior lights – Multiple users stated that the interior lights would stay on despite trying to switch them off. This makes driving at night difficult as the glare from the lights blinds the vision of the driver. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who then stated this to be a common issue which was said to occur due to a faulty interior cluster brightness knob. The lights would turn off after toggling the brightness knob multiple times and in some cases, the electrical module of this knob needed to be replaced.
  • Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) – The vehicle was said to stop responding when the gas pedal was depressed, almost like the engine was dead. The users noticed a warning code “P2138” displayed, which is the error code for a faulty TPS. The diagnostics further confirmed that the TPS needed to be replaced and a sudden failure of this module can increase the chances of a collision.

Safety Problems

  • Safety sensor – The “safety restrain system” warning was always being displayed despite ensuring the seatbelts were buckled. The constant warning sign posed a disturbance while driving and also consumed change from the battery. The dealers identified the issue to be happening due to a faulty connector of the safety sensor beneath the seat which needed to be replaced.

Steering Wheel Emblem May Separate

During the frontal driver airbag's deployment, the plastic "Camaro" symbol that is attached to the steering wheel airbag cover could come apart. The danger of injury can increase because plastic insignia parts could behave as projectiles when the driver airbag deploys.

Owners will be informed by GM, and dealers will for free of charge replace the frontal driver-side airbag module.

Fuel Pump Missing Pressure Regulator

It's possible that the gasoline pump doesn't have a pressure regulator, which would cause the fuel system to be overpressurized. In the presence of an ignition source, overpressurization can shatter the fuel pump and result in leaks, raising the possibility of a fire.

Owners will receive a notification from GM, and dealers will for free of charge replace the fuel pump. The recall started on December 18, 2019.

Should you buy the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1?

Just like the family vehicles that Chevrolet makes, the Camaro ZL1 has a great reputation for being easier to maintain and nurture for a vehicle of its kind. The Camaro ZL1 according to J.D.Power deserves an 86 on 100 for quality and reliability, which is considered to be a great score. Apart from that, the ZL1 comes with a 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty while the powertrain gets a 5-year or 60,000-mile warranty. Though the sales graph for this model has been dropping over the years, it does not mean the reliability has been dropping, and the 2020 Camaro ZL1 on the used market for anywhere between $65,000 to $70,000 is considered to be ideal. However, even before you jump in and sign that cheque, we would recommend getting the seat sensors, brightness knob, and brake pedal chacked as these are the key weak links that are easily ignored when getting a used car.
