Overview

The 2017 Tesla Model X is available for sale and comes in four trims- 75D, 90D, 100D, and P100D. Pricing for these trims ranges between $79,500 and $145,000. The base 259-hp 75D has a claimed range of 238 miles and completes the 0-60 MPH sprint in 4.9 seconds, despite having a curb weight of 5,271 lbs. Similarly, you get 257 miles with the 90D model, 295 miles with the 100D while the range-topping P100D trim covers 289 miles of distance.

The cabin of the Model X has a clean, minimalistic layout and can seat up to 7 people. At 88.1 cubic feet, the Model X is the most practical electric SUV. Moreover, Tesla is more inclined to safety and hence, it offers all the top driver-assist features as standard. There are no direct rivals for the Model X but considering the size and power it makes, the Model X goes against the BMW X5, the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, and the Porsche Cayenne.

Buying Advice

The base 75D trim is a perfect choice if you travel infrequently as it offers only 238 miles of range. If you are an avid traveler, go for the 100D model as it can drive up to 295 miles. We recommend the optional $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot package as it includes the features of park assist, lane change assist, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Tesla's falcon-doored crossover SUV is still ahead of its time- Cnet

The Tesla Model X is the world's first all-electric SUV and is a car for early adopters. With the practicality of an SUV, the Model X offers an extensive list of standard features. It offers a range of up to 295 miles that can be fully recharged in just 30 minutes at one of Tesla's supercharging stations. In terms of performance, the Model X is a showstopper.

The electric powertrain of the Model X ensures low ownership costs. As it is not powered by a conventional engine, there are few moving parts and hence, maintenance and repair costs are very low. Moreover, the fuel costs are down by almost 90 percent. The annual cost to own the Model X is $14,400, which is obviously less than many premium SUVs.

Features
9.0/10

The 2017 Tesla Model X's standard features are plentiful and remain almost unchanged across its four available trims- Carmax

The Tesla Model X is available for sale in the U.S. market in four trims namely 75D, 90D, 100D, and P100D. Pricing starts from $79,500 and it ranges up to $145,000 for the performance-based P100D trim. A destination fee of $1,200 is applicable. Unlike other luxury SUVs in its segment, the Model X offers almost all comfort and technological features as standard. A pair of 20-inch aluminum wheels are standard throughout the range but 22-inch wheels are optional.

Some of the interior features include premium cloth upholstery with leatherette accents, 14-way power front seats with power lumbar support, LED ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 17-inch touchscreen display, and many more. The Model X also offers several optional packages for its safety and comfort upgrades. The Subzero Weather package adds a heated steering wheel, wiper blade defrosters, washer nozzle heaters and three-zone rear-seat heaters.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

The Tesla Model X's efficiency numbers are, of course, amazing- CarGurus

The Tesla Model X is the cleanest and greenest family SUV while also offering impressive fuel efficiency. The base 75D model returns 91 MPGe in the city, 95 MPGe on a highway, and 93 MPGe combined. The most powerful P100D trim returns just 86 combined MPGe. Different models of the Tesla Model X have different battery sizes and hence, driving ranges differ.

A combined range of 238 miles is delivered in the 75D trim while the 100D model offers the best range of 295 miles. A battery capacity of 75 kWh is fitted in the 75D trim. Charging this battery takes nearly 12 hours with a standard charger at 240V. There are several supercharging stations installed across the country that can charge from 0-80 percent in about 30 minutes only.

Only the Model X is an electric car while the rest of the rivals have gas-powered engines. Therefore, fuel economy is comparatively less. The BMW X5's fuel efficiency is somewhat better than its rivals. The fuel ratings of the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class are almost similar to the X5 as their power levels are similar. Meanwhile, the Porsche Cayenne has the worst efficiency in this competition.

Interior
8.0/10

The futuristic feel is cemented by the X's giant touchscreen- Autoblog

Once you are inside the cabin of the Tesla Model X, you will find yourself in a calm, stylish, and minimalistic environment. Five seats are standard in the Model X but it can be ordered with six or seven-seat configuration as well. The seats are dressed in premium cloth upholstery with leatherette accents. Once seated in the driver's seat, you will notice an enormous windscreen and it arches back over your head, opening up to the sky above. The front seats are extremely comfortable and the under-thigh support is good too.

Six-footers will love sitting in the front row as there is abundant space available. The Falcon wing rear doors give a warm welcome to the rear occupants. The head and legroom offered are slightly more than the class rivals. The third row is best suited for kids if you opt for the 7-seater configuration. There are only two buttons provided, one for the glove box and the other for hazard warning lights. It may seem a bit daunting the first time you sit because, in Tesla's brave new world, everything is all about tech.

No car can beat the space levels offered by the Model X. The closest to it is the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class but still, its less headroom can be tough for a six-footer. It's a similar story with the BMW X5 as well. However, its rear legroom can take away the comfort levels of the rear passengers. The Porsche Cayenne's rear row lacks legroom due to its compact dimensions.

2017 Tesla Model X Infotainment System

The Tesla Model X houses a 17-inch high-resolution touchscreen display at the center of the dash. Most of the tech-related things are operated from this central control panel. When you are on the move, what you need to know is displayed on a customizable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. At a first glance, the infotainment system may look complex to understand but it's not really. This large screen can open and close the doors or can reconfigure the two back rows of seats exactly as you want them.

A 9-speaker sound system does the sole job of delivering a decent sound quality. At the top of the screen, you may notice a series of small icons just like you have in a smartphone. Another cool thing is that once you set your destination in, it will work out how much charge you will be left at the end of that journey. It also shows the nearest supercharging stations available on the journey. This large screen is also the center house for your climate controls and other vehicle adjustments.

2017 Tesla Model X Interior Features

Unlike many rivals in its segment, the Tesla Model X offers plenty of standard comfort and technological features. Some of them include:

  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • 14-way power front seats with power lumbar support and heated function
  • Ambient lighting
  • Premium cloth upholstery with leatherette accents
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Leatherette dash & door trim
  • Wood interior accents
  • 17-inch touchscreen display
  • 12.3-inch customizable instrument cluster
  • 9-speaker sound system

2017 Tesla Model X Cargo Space

The amount of cargo space depends on which configuration you go for. A cargo capacity of 88.1 cu-ft. is offered in a traditional 5-seater configuration. This space is provided behind the second row while the second-row seats don't fold at all. With so much space available, the Model X is probably the most practical electric SUV. Even with the seven seats, space isn't too bad.

The two rear seats fold flat at a push of a button for the times when you need a larger load area. There's a secret compartment below the storage floor. It's home to all the charging cables and it also has room for a dirty stroller. There is no engine upfront and therefore, you get extra storage space which is really useful.

Without a doubt, the Model X is clearly the most practical SUV in its class. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class has a maximum cargo space of 80.3 cu-ft. but it's still not close to the Model X. The BMW X5 is not much of a practical vehicle and offers only 76.7 cu-ft., which is still decent for a weekend getaway. But, the Porsche Cayenne disappoints with just 62.9 cu-ft. of cargo space available

Exterior

When open, the falcon doors remind us of the "Karate Kid."- The Car Connection

Unlike most SUVs, the Tesla Model X has a low nose and this is to help with the aerodynamic drag. Since there's no big radiator, the nose is clean and this along with the low set roof helps make the Model X one of the slipperiest SUVs around. Upfront, LED headlights and DRLs are standard throughout the lineup. The Model X gets a set of 20-inch aluminum wheels as standard but 22-inch wheels are optional. It has a low ground clearance for an SUV but it can be raised up to 8.3 inches.

At 116.7 inches, the Model X has the widest wheelbase in its segment, which translates for a spacious cabin. The design is also nice and clean without too many unnecessary details around. The Falcon wing rear doors need 11 inches of space to open. That's typically what you'd get in a parking area. The benefit of having this door is easy to access to the second or third row. The rear design of the Model X is kept simple and looks like a BMW X6 with a fastback design.

The short wheelbase of the Porsche Cayenne is the reason for its cramped space in the rear row. Despite weighing 5,095 pounds, the BMW X5's athletic performance leaves the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class to dust. The ground clearance offered in the GLE-Class is less than its class rivals but it helps to handle effectively on smoother roads.

2017 Tesla Model X Exterior Features

Some of the noticeable exterior features of the Model X are:

  • LED headlights, taillights & DRLs
  • Exterior entry lamps
  • Power-folding, auto-dimming exterior mirrors
  • Chrome door handles
  • Black grille with chrome accents
  • Chrome window trim
  • 20-inch aluminum wheels

Safety
8.1/10

The Tesla Model X has been designed for occupant safety with the front trunk acting as a crumple zone- MotorTrend

The Tesla Model X scored a perfect 5-star rating from NHTSA. Moreover, it is the only vehicle in its class to score five stars in all the crash tests conducted by NHTSA. These tests include rollover, side-impact, and frontal crash tests. However, IIHS neglected to crash-test the Model X but we expect it may earn respectable safety ratings.

If you are talking about a Tesla the there's no need for concern regarding its safety. A dozen airbags are provided in the Model X for enhanced protection of the passengers. Moreover, the SUV also comes with some important and effective driver assistance features that can save the passenger's life by preventing a collision.

The list of safety features available in the Model X are listed below:

  • Rearview Camera
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Collision Avoidance
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Park Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Change Assist
  • Full Self-Driving Capability

Competition
7.0/10

2017 Tesla Model X vs 2017 Porsche Cayenne

Price-wise, the Porsche Cayenne is $19,900 cheaper than the Model X. Like the Model X, the Cayenne's performance is among the best with its class rivals while its towing capacity remains unbeatable in this competition. Its fuel efficiency is not good but its large fuel tank helps to deliver a better range. Furthermore, the Cayenne's rear row feels slightly cramped while its cargo capacity is the least in this competition. The Cayenne was not crash-tested but packs a good list of safety techs.

2017 Tesla Model X vs 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

With a starting price of $54,500, the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is the cheapest car in this competition. In its class, the GLE-Class's performance is one of the best and so is its fuel economy. It also impresses with its excellent towing capacity. On the inside, the GLE-Class cabin lacks enough headroom but offers many luxury features as standard. But, its cargo space is less compared to the Model X. The GLE-Class earned the 'IIHS Top Safety Pick+' title, making it the safest option.

2017 Tesla Model X vs 2017 BMW X5

The less-expensive BMW X5 makes 41 hp less than the Model X. It is known for its athletic performance while also delivering an impressive fuel economy in its class. However, its towing capacity is not the best but acceptable. The X5 offers less passenger space in the rear row while its cargo capacity is just a few cubic feet less than the Model X. Both the SUVs score best ratings from NHTSA and both of them host cutting-edge driver aids that are globally popular in the world.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Tesla Model X is the future proof but of course, all this technology doesn't cheap. There are many reasons you could buy the Model X such as accessible Falcon wing doors, electric efficiency, a do-it-all touchscreen, instant power, and last but not the least, designed for safety. You could buy any number of luxury SUVs for less than a Model X but that kind of comparison doesn't really apply here. That's because until other carmakers get their electric SUVs into the market, there really isn't anything else like the Tesla Model X.

Tesla Model X, a change in our roads

Pros - ["High performance", "Software keeps improving, access to supercharging everywhere"]

Cons - ["Build quality, large gaps, creaking interior", "Range of vehicle is still on the early side w only 290mi"]

The Tesla Model X is I would say a revolutionary product. As a small company, it has grown quite quickly to selling the most popular cars in the world. This specific model, the Model X 100D has a lot to go for. It's high range considering competitors, its continually changing software, high performance, and even good looks. However there's a lot to improve on like build quality specifically and i...
