... Expect hesitations and a rocking back and forth accelerate to hesitate as the computers try to figure out what to do. Very frustrating, especially if you are accustom to old-school direct connections where your foot is the only controller in the game. Highway, better, but best if you are a lead-foot. Otherwise be prepared to be really concerned about safety. Year andRead More

In a falling trend of sedans, the Mazda6 stands abreast with its unique and unconventional "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design language, as described by the brand, and doesn’t miss on the sportiness too. The reliability of Mazda vehicles has been praised earlier and the Mazda6 is no different. The 2018 model has seen only 17 complaints and 2 recalls as per the NHTSA records, a decent feat for its sales figure of 30,938 units. About the problems, the car has faced the maximum issues with its powertrain and related parts. In the segment, the sedan goes up against the Honda Accord, the Hyundai Sonata, and the Nissan Altima.

Mazda Mazda6 user complaints and problems

Engine problems

  • Sudden engine stall: One owner faced this issue with the 2018 Mazda6. The owner reported that while accelerating after a brief stop at a stoplight, the vehicle stalled suddenly. Afterward, the powertrain dragged the vehicle suddenly forward, nearly resulting in a crash.
  • Faulty tensioner belt: A single owner faced an issue with the vehicle’s tensioner belt. The report says that when the owner took the vehicle in for scheduled maintenance, the tensioner belt was found to be bad and required a complete replacement. The owner further mentioned that there were several complaints on unofficial forums regarding the same issue and the reason being poor materials used while manufacturing.

Electrical problems

  • Electrical fire: One owner reported a vehicle fire that damaged his Mazda6 sedan. The report stated that while the vehicle was parked in a parking lot, it caught fire and was completely destroyed. The primary reason was suspected to be a faulty wiring harness.

Exterior problems

  • Sunroof exploding: A single report was filed regarding this issue. The owner was driving the vehicle when the sunroof exploded without any exterior impact.
  • Shaking ORVM: A single complaint on the NHTSA about the 2018 Mazda6 mentioned this issue. The owner complained that while driving at highway speeds, the driver’s side ORVM shakes excessively, reducing the overall visibility.
  • Excessive paint chipping: A couple of complainants faced this issue with their 2018 Mazda6. They said in their reports that after a brief period, the paints started to develop a lot of chipping, a direct result of minute debris hitting the car while driving on roads.

Should you buy a used Mazda Mazda6?

The Mazda6 is an attractive sedan that provides an athletic handling, stylish interior and exterior design, and strong performance. However, it does lack in the ride quality department, a sacrifice to be made for its brilliant handling capabilities. In the reliability department, the car does quite well but some of the owners were left disappointed due to a few reliability and quality-control issues. Overall, the sedan makes for a great used car too if your priorities are style and handling.
