Overview

The Lotus Evija is truly a one-of-a-kind car because it is one of the first electric hypercars in the world. It also signifies a departure from the philosophy of Lotus as a brand because they have focused on lightweight sports cars that have not had to rely much on sheer horsepower numbers. The 2022 Lotus Evija is one of the most sophisticated models in the British car maker’s line-up and promises a lot of technology.

Buying Advice

It is not hard selecting which trim to buy because there is only one trim on offer. However, one might go dizzy looking at the options list as well as the personalization the brand offers for a particular model. Limited to just 130 pieces, it is truly an incredibly personal affair to buy one but the brand wants you to feel even more special than that. It pushes the boundaries of automotive technologies in ways that have never been seen before. It also claims that it is the most powerful production car on the planet and hence we would definitely recommend personalizing your car when you take delivery.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Freshly introduced for the 2022 model year, prices for the Lotus Evija start at an MSRP of $2,300,000. That is quite a hefty sum to pay for something that is not even street legal in the United States. It is available in a single trim level and there are no other body styles apart from the coupe that is currently offered. It represents the best of technology in terms of sports cars and competes against the Rimac C_Two, Pininfarina Battista and the Aspark Owl.

Features

The Lotus Evija is available in a single trim level that has all of the equipment that one would want out of the electric hypercar. Even though it is quite bare-bones, it comes with an excellent infotainment system, climate control and so on that should keep its owners very happy. Apart from this Lotus offers a lot of options when it comes to painting finishes, interior trim and so on that allow you to personalize your hypercar to your heart’s content. However, Lotus only plans to make 130 cars in the line-up and it might be too late to book one right now.

2022 Lotus Evija Release date

Lotus had initially planned to bring the Evija by the fall of 2021 but due to the pandemic restrictions, the release has been pushed further ahead. As part of official releases so far, we expect that this release date might be around early 2022. This would mean that there would be a slight delay in delivering the cars to the customers which can be expected only by the first quarter of 2022.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Generally, when we have talked about the mind-numbing performance figures of several hypercars, their biggest disadvantage has always been in terms of fuel efficiency. They end up drinking as much as they could and end up burning a hole in their pocket. However, one advantage of cars from the new era is that they do not drink fuel at all. In terms of range, we expect the Lotus to return around 250 miles of range which is excellent. However, since no tests have been done on it by the EPA, we cannot assume anything about its range.

We find that the Rimac claims the highest range figures out of this category while the Lotus claims the least. Even though the fuel efficiency figures for any of the cars are not out yet, they all have excellent battery technology. The Lotus has very impressive technology in this regard. It has extremely sophisticated charging technology that is equal to 12 minutes for 80% charge, while a full charge takes only 18 minutes. This makes it very practical.

Interior
4.0/10

Dramatic is the first word that can be used to describe the interiors of the Evija. You are greeted by a pair of dihedral doors that do not have handles to make them more aerodynamic. There are a number of material comforts inside the car that include electrically adjustable front seats, pads made out of microfiber as well as tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column, and a few storage spaces. Lotus has made it a point to concentrate on giving customers the best experience inside the car.

One is also greeted with excellent fit and finish which is new for the brand as well as a very ergonomic design. Ingress and egress can be a little hard considering how low the car sits but the seating position is very convenient. There is a slight lack of space inside the cabin but the driving position is very nice. The seats are very supportive while also being extremely light and visibility is also great from the cabin. Cargo capacity is very low but that is not something that buyers in the segment exactly look for. There are design elements that are very retro and yet very modern.

The cabins of all cars in this category are quite cramped and all of them offer nearly the same amount of features. All the cars offer seating for two people as is the norm in this category. Material comforts offered inside are something new for this category and we are welcoming it. The interior dimensions of all the cars are unknown as well as the cargo space. All are extremely modern and dynamic in terms of design and promise very unique driving experiences. Some standard features include:

  • Key-fob operated handle-free Dihedral Doors
  • “Floating wing” dashboard
  • Padded Carbon Fiber Seats
  • Lotus Infotainment screen
  • Multifunction F1 inspired steering wheel with drive mode selector
  • “Floating” infotainment controls
  • Chrome-plated A/C vents
  • Alcantara and leather upholstery on seats, dashboard, roof, and steering wheel

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2022 Lotus Evija?

When it comes to infotainment options, there is not a lot on offer but the features are very much adequate for the car. The only screen that you will find in the car is the one that houses the driver information display.

The driver information display is digital and provides an adequate amount of information including information regarding the battery. The audio system is also quite nice and provides smartphone connectivity. There is also an onboard modem that gives you access to the cloud. Some features of the infotainment system include:

  • Bluetooth
  • WiFi connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • 4-speaker sound setup

Exterior
8.0/10

The Lotus Evija is a truly beautiful piece of design that will go on to become a future masterpiece. It looks very different from any model that we have seen from the British manufacturer and is a completely new direction. It is entirely futuristic and most of the shape is sculpted by the wind.

Aerodynamics has been the deciding factor in every single line and crease that you find on the car. It has an excellent road presence and is a very special thing to look at. It has a certain dynamism to the design and a sense of purpose that is very much distinguishable. The Lotus philosophy has filtered to the extent that the Evija is the lightest car in its class.

The Lotus Evija is smaller than all of its competitors but we also have to remember that it is a bit more expensive than everything except the Mercedes. It also has the shortest wheelbase which makes it much more agile and nimble than its competitors. This also makes it the lightest car in the class which should mean significant advantages in terms of handling. In terms of weight, the Rimac is rather on the heavier side and weighs 4,300 lbs. in terms of ground clearance all cars offer the minimum acceptable amount. Since most of these cars are not road legal and will only be used on a track, this is very much adequate. Some standout features include:

  • Lotus Laser headlamps
  • Full LED rear lamps
  • F1 Drag Reduction System in the back
  • Lightweight magnesium alloy wheels 20-inch front, 21-inch rear
  • Lightweight paint job
  • Full Carbon Fiber body
  • Pop-Out rearview cameras

Safety
3.0/10

When it comes to safety, Lotus has always stressed structural engineering and not safety features to ensure it. It has been a responsible manufacturer that has provided speed but also the means to bring it down and the protection that customers need during an emergency situation. However, being a car that is produced in extreme volumes, it has not been evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS, and nor will it ever be. It comes with most of the advanced safety features available in the market today as standard features and one can rest assured that it is a safe car. The structural rigidity of the carbon fiber shell on which the car is based itself is one of the biggest assurances of safety. Some of the standout safety features include:

  • ABS with EBD and Brake Assist
  • Airbags Driver and Passenger side
  • Fully Automatic Torque Vectoring
  • ESP Stability Control
  • Single Piece molded full carbon fiber chassis for added rigidity

2022 Lotus Evija Vs. 2022 Rimac C_Two

Rimac is probably one of the earliest entrants in the electric hypercar scene. However, it might mostly be offered at a price that is quite higher than the price that the Lotus would be offered at.

For that price, we still feel that the Lotus is a good pick but the Rimac surely has the performance to justify its higher price tag. It offers much more thought, acceleration figures, and so on. But the Lotus is on the lighter side and might be a better handler on track. We are yet to see how these cars are out in the real world.

2022 Lotus Evija vs. 2022 Pininfarina Battista

The Pininfarina Battista is another fierce rival to the Lotus Evija. However, it is based on the Rimac itself and hence would be a very similar car to the front.

It offers much better convenience features and so on over the Lotus, but the fact that it could very well be a much higher performing car than the Lotus should be enough to sell it even at its higher price tag. The Lotus is still a winner from a practical point of view and would be an excellent choice.

2022 Lotus Evija Vs. 2022 Aspark Owl

The Aspark Owl is an interpretation of the same philosophy from Japan. However, it has not yet been announced when it would exactly go on sale. It claims very tall performance figures and has got some interest in automotive circles.

We feel that it could be a very exciting car and we’re also curious to find out how it performs in the real world. As long as Aspark manages to unveil the car very soon and compete against the likes of the Lotus, we are confident it would be a good one.

Final Verdict

The new Lotus Evija is an extremely rare and high-performing car that is available at a very hefty price tag. It would even seem ridiculous to somebody who does not understand cars because this car is not even road legal in the United States. However, it is currently riding on the edge of what is automotive technology as we understand it and continues to push the envelope of performance further into the future. It has several practical sacrifices but offers some advantages that cannot ever be offered by any car that we have seen to now. If you have the money for it and Lotus is still offering them on sale, we would definitely recommend that you go get one of them.
