2017 Honda Pilot Issues and User Complaints
Mechanical Problems:
- The engine of the car has reported multiple problems, including emission system issues, VTEC oil rocker arm problems, and so on. Engine jerking and stalling are also common problems, and there have been multiple causes for this issue.
- The 2017 Honda Pilot transmission problems include the drive indicator blinking while the car loses motive power. It causes troubles with the transmission system, all-wheel-drive system, and blind spot monitor.
- Many owners have faced problems with a gasoline smell inside the car. There were no leaks found, but the smell persisted.
- The brakes of the car produce a grinding sound when the rotors get hot, which also compromises braking performance. A few owners have also reported a cracking noise while braking.
- The steering wheel jerking from left to right has been noted as a common issue, and many owners have complained about it.
Electrical system problems:
- There are a few electrical problems along the lines of the car trying to run all the systems when it is parked. This results in battery drain unless the owner disconnects the battery each time the car is parked, and hence becomes a huge inconvenience.
- There have been multiple complaints about the auto-start-stop function not working properly as well. The engine shuts down intermittently, especially when at stop signs, and refuses to start back up. The 2017 Honda Pilot keyless start system also trigger alarms. It is one of the most common Pilot problems.
- A few owners have reported that the car produces popping and cracking sounds from the dashboard. It has been so common that customers have started demanding a Honda Pilot crackling noise recall to fix the problem.
- Other problems with the electrical systems include the complete disconnection of the entertainment system. The entire system goes off, and this includes the speedometer. The heating on the steering wheel also does not work sometimes.
- Another common problem is with the LED daytime running lights of the car not working properly after a while.
- Quite a few owners have had the instrument panel light up with multiple warnings relating to the exhaust, fuel injectors, and so on.
Exterior Problems:
- Although a few had their hoods repaired through the recall, they continued to face problems with the separation.
- A few owners have reported that the rear windshield exploded while the car was not subject to any impact from the outside. The same also applies to the sunroof.
- One owner has alleged that the paint peels off from the liftgate, which is unacceptable quality for a car of this caliber.
Safety Problems:
- A few owners have reported problems with the airbags not deploying correctly and thus causing injury.
- A few owners have had problems with the cruise control as well as the braking system of the car. The car lurches forward with a sudden jolt and goes out of control in situations where the braking system should be engaged. In other cases, the emergency braking system engages itself without warning when there are no objects upfront.
- There was an incident in which the child seat harness detached from the rear of the seat.
- An electrical problem has also affected multiple safety systems, in which the camera assembly, automatic emergency braking, collision mitigation, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and so on seemed to shut down randomly.
- The seatbelt material fraying has been recorded as a common issue. Other owners have complained that the seatbelt does not extend far enough to accommodate people with a larger frame.

Should you buy the 2017 Honda Pilot?
The Honda Pilot SUV is a decent pick, but the reliability problems have not lived up to the reputation created by Honda. Also, there is one open investigation related to the malfunction of the auto start/stop system. Hence, despite all of its strengths, we recommend staying away from this model year. The recalls issued were minor and have not begun to fix any of the car’s problems. We feel that the Hyundai Palisade fulfills family duties with much greater ease of ownership.
