... called me and said there was nothing they would do as it was 2500 miles over the warranty and it's a car and cars breakdown. He told me to drive it 1500 miles back home and have the dealership at home repair it and they might be able to help cover the cost of $1300. I didn't want to drive that far without all the safety features working and he told me that that's on me. With the problemsRead More

The 2020 Honda Odyssey elite has given nothing but problems from the purchase. We are have problems with the cabin watch freezing, relays keep emitting sharp noises while driving, gps keeps freezing, DVD player keeps freezing, communications errors and something is rattling in the drivers side door panel. Honda has replaced the odometer and amplifier so far and we’re planning on replacing the tuner. The car has spent monthsRead More

As crossovers and SUVs are slowly taking over the market, the ubiquitous minivan segment, which has been a staple for modern families is losing popularity. The Honda Odyssey has always retained its status as one of the most popular options in the segment, offering good value and one of the most practical interiors. The 2020 model continues to cover all the basics, offering a potent V-6 engine paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. However, despite the Honda badge, the Odyssey is not the most reliable minivan.

The 2020 model has already been through 6 recalls so far, and there are 62 registered complaints. These numbers are unusually high for a Japanese brand like Honda. Let's take a deeper look into the reliability of Honda’s popular minivan and see if it holds the reliability standards that the brand is known for.

2020 Honda Odyssey User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - Multiple owners have reported the engine stalling and not starting with the idle stop-start system engaged.
  • Transmission - Power lag while shifting and stuck gear levers were reported by some owners, causing the car to be unusable.

Electrical Problems

  • Infotainment - Issues with the infotainment system not functioning properly or completely failing is common among owners. Battery draining issues were also reported along with these failures.

Safety Problems

  • Driver Assistance Systems - Several reports were made of the forward collision avoidance system applying the brakes intermittently without any obstruction in front.
  • Power-sliding doors - Some injuries were reported after the power-sliding doors forced shit even with resistance. Some owners also faced issues like the doors not closing and being stuck open.

Exterior Problems

  • Moonroof - Some cases of the moonroof suddenly braking without any external force were reported.

Should you buy the 2020 Honda Odyssey?

While the Odyssey continues to score high on all fronts, especially when you consider the new and improved powertrain, there are several reliability issues to consider. By far, the most problematic area for the Odyssey concerns its electricals, more specifically the infotainment system. The power sliding doors also continue to cause trouble, although Honda has issued a recall for the same. Overall, as a complete package for moving the family around in comfort, the 2020 Honda Odyssey continues to be a solid choice. When shopping for a used one, make sure all the recalls are done and do a thorough inspection at a dealer.
