Expect to have a high cost repair while owning this vehicle. There is a reason other car manufacturers have better warranties, they are confident in their cars performance. GMC is confident in their cars having issues soon after the warranty expires. Update: I recently sold this car as I wasRead More

The GMC Acadia is a popular truck-like utility vehicle from General Motors, and it is also the first SUV to be built on a unibody platform as well. The 2013 Acadia comes with some significant updates in terms of styling, list of features, and interior materials along with improvement in its reliability aspect as well. Officially, the current model has seen 111 complaints with 3 recalls to date. The recalls deal with airbag issues and seat belt issues while the other problems are yet to be resolved through recalls. Coming to the complaints, the powertrain, airbags, and electrical system has received the maximum number of complaints while areas such as steering and exterior lighting have also faced a few reports.

The 2013 Acadia is challenged by the Toyota Highlander, the Honda Pilot, and the Chevrolet Traverse.

GMC Acadia user complaints and problems

Engine problems

  • Shifting problems from transmission: The transmission of several 2013 Acadia models has troubled their owners. Most of the owners report that the transmission would cease to work suddenly, resulting in power loss. In some cases, the transmissions refused to shift out of a particular gear resulting in sudden deceleration or failure to accelerate after slowing down.
  • Sudden engine stalling issue: Many cases of sudden engine stalling have been reported against the 2013 Acadia. According to the reports, the owners faced issues while driving. In a few instances, the connecting rods of the pistons punched a hole through the engine which resulted in the engine stalls.

Safety problems

  • Airbag failure: In a few cases, the airbags of the affected vehicles failed. While the owners were involved in crashes, the airbags failed to deploy, and the seat belts also failed to restrain the occupants in one instance.
  • Airbag sensor malfunction: A couple of cases mentioning this issue were reported. According to the owners, the airbag warning light came on while driving and for no apparent reason as well.

Miscellaneous problems

  • Power steering failure: The power steering system has failed in the case of many owners while driving. The failures resulted in the steering wheel getting very hard to turn which also posed a safety risk too.
  • Dashboard crack: A handful of owners complain regarding a dashboard crack in their vehicles. The cracks developed within a short time and over the airbag modules as well. The cracks over the airbag modules pose a serious problem since, during the inflation of the airbags, small and broken pieces of the dashboard can cause serious injuries to the occupants.

General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, repair and replace the lap pretensioner, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim notice will be mailed to owners in July 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners once parts become available. The recall for the 2009-2010 model years began on July 11, 2014. Should you buy a used GMC Acadia?

The GMC Acadia, after its significant update for the current model year, becomes more appealing in its class, offering a cavernous cabin, plush ride, and excellent safety scores. Apart from being safe and well-equipped, the Acadia also does a good job in terms of its reliability aspect and the complaints against the current model only amount to a small percentage of the total units of the vehicle sold. While going for a used example, make sure to look out for the engine problems and the power steering problems.
