2019 Ford Expedition Problems
The Expedition is the segment’s favorite pick but comes with a different set of issues. The most common issues faced are related to its transmission, while the rear liftgate adds to the woes. The SUV also gets three recalls, the details of which we’ll discuss later. Let’s see the common issues first.
Electrical issues:
- Deep Sleep mode: There are complaints stating the Expedition’s activation of the Deep Sleep mode. Although the mode is used to conserve battery if the vehicle isn't used for a long period of time, the model is said to activate in a short span of a couple of days. This requires the SUV to be jumpstarted and is a major inconvenience. On a different note, there are many complaints about the mode not activating and draining out the battery in just 4 days of non-usage.
- Poor headlight throw: In the models equipped with halogen headlamps, people have frowned upon how bad the throw is. There have been many complaints criticizing the low output and restricted throw, at both high- and low beams. The complainants say that the is very restricted at the corners. Such restricted lighting is a hazard on twisty roads.
- Electrical fires: There have been some cases where the SUV caught fire under the hood. Investigations have revealed varying causes for the issue. Although a major issue, it shouldn't be a deterrent due to its isolated nature and rare occurrence.
- Miscellaneous electrical issues: Since the Expedition is laced with the latest technology at Ford, there are several sensors in use. These sensors are prone to malfunction and disable the related features. Such disablement also results in random warning messages flashing on the instrument cluster. These warnings produce audible warnings and cause a big distraction.
Mechanical issues:
- Rough startup: A rough startup is an inherent problem with the current-gen Expedition. People have reported the roughness time and again and there is no official remedy yet. There have been complaints regarding a vibration that continues when the SUV is moving. A handful of people have reported smoke coming out from the tailpipes when the SUV is started.
- Powertrain failure: People have complained about the 10-speed transmission failing. In some cases, the transmission fails at just 10,000 miles. Such a failure locks up the rear wheels and can cause a crash on the highway. In case of such failure, the whole transmission needs to be replaced.
- Steering issues: Some people have reported the steering does not hold its line when cruise control is engaged. In some cases, the steering “sticks” while turning. The driver has to put extra force to correct the steering’s movement.

Should you buy the 2019 Ford Expedition?
The 2019 Ford Expedition ticks most of the boxes that the segment necessitates but there are some issues to be taken care of. The SUV’s transmission is a major complaining point reported by the owners, while the sensors and wiring are no less problematic. The tech-laden character does come with its own shortfalls.
