Overview
The 2024 XM is a heavyweight champion that can sprint as fast as a hypercar, with 6000 lbs of belly—making it one of the heaviest cars on sale right now. And we can give you 644 reasons to justify its weight; however, we can’t elucidate its price tag. It starts at $ 159,000 and goes up to an earth-shattering base price of $ 185,000. The biggest reason could be the name XM, the top-of-the-line flagship BMW M performance vehicle, which is the elder brother to the 7 series and guardian of the M5.
But it significantly fails at both these roles, trying to be one, leaving its true self behind. The 2024 XM gets another boost of power with a top trim called the ‘Label Red.’ Now it bounces off the line with a 748hp and completes 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. For the 2024 model year the mighty SUV from BMW with compete neck to neck with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-hybrid, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG, and the Audi RS Q8.
Buying Advice
The base level XM was the BMW with the most horsepower, now ‘Label Red’ is, but it doesn’t make a drastic difference. It still reaches 0 to 60 mph in less than 4.2 seconds and packs enough features to make your journeys amazing. The more powerful ‘Label Red’ doesn’t impress because now it will cost $ 185,000 to own one. If you want 23-inch alloys, then you can travel to some high-end alloy showrooms, and they will offer a variety of designs to choose from.
Owning a performance version of an already fast SUV doesn’t make much difference unless BMW adds more carbon fiber to it and takes out a few things to reduce its weight.
The XM has the tag of ‘most powerful M car’, but it doesn’t act like it. The XM is also an uberly luxurious SUV with a high-end interior designed to take you to another dimension of luxury. Still, it fails to be more comfortable than a Honda Accord. The bumps are felt, it doesn’t rotate as smoothly as it promises to, and driving it aggressively doesn't give you any joy. And the way it appears is kind of confusing, because so many styles grow on you, which looks weird at first, but we are not sure about this raccoon-shaped front end. The behemoth size of XM doesn’t give this car a character. So, is it characterless? Let's find out.
Features
The XM adds another trim, “Label Red”, to the 2024 model. Its only difference is mechanical, with more horsepower than before; BMW claims it will reach 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 sec. Other than mechanical change, everything remains the same. The price has also been raised, plus it comes with 23-inch wheels as standard. The new trim is the performance model of XM. The XM trim will get you the best and specially made features for the BMW XM. Bowers & Wilkins has created a special 20-speaker sound system for the XM. The rear seat headliners, made with Alcantara and LED embedded in them, create an ambiance that feels equivalent to a high-end suite. There is a long list of luxurious features installed in the XM, which makes it the most special BMW ever.

Release Date
The XM was launched in December 2022. The XM ‘Label Red’ is on sale from 28th April, 2023.
Engine and Performance
The XM is a place where the 4.4L Twin turbo V8 joined hands with a 29.48 kWh battery, and the final result is the XM has a humongous 644 hp and 590 lb of torque—transferred to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. It can reach 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds. The top speed of XM is 168 mph; however, driving it feels like it’s only made for cruising. The bodyweight and suspension don’t coordinate well with the monstrous engine. So, it is best when driven peacefully.

Fuel Economy
On a sunny day, if you drive your performance car smoothly, you can get a return of 12 MPG in the city plus 17 MPG on the highway, with a fuel tank of 18.2 gallons on an internal combustion engine. On a combustion engine, you’ll get 218.4 miles of range in the city and 254.8 miles combined. The XM in electric mode can run up to 33 miles, which is quite impressive considering the size of the car. The XM isn’t made to save miles but to fully extract every ounce of power from the engine to provide the ultimate performance from the flagship BMW. These external factors are great and tell a lot about the car and its engineering, but it shouldn’t forget its main purpose, which XM doesn’t.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63 puts out a decent fuel economy with 14 MPG in the city, 19 on the highway, and 16 combined. It is followed by the mighty RS Q8, which achieves 20 MPG on the highway. Both Germans are at the same level in the MPG test, but the Mercedes-Benz scores the highest mark because it has a larger fuel tank. The RS Q8 is a powerful SUV, even giving out decent fuel economy figures. The XM, with 18.2 gallons of the fuel tank, manages to produce 17 MPG on the highway. It has the smallest fuel tank, so the owner will have to visit the gas station quite a few times. We at CarHP are waiting for the fuel economy results of the Porsche Cayenne and are eager to share them with our readers. Till then, let's wait.
Interior
The interior of XM is minimalistic, with M performance seats with electrically adjustable features. The sill plates on each door have an M badge plate, which informs you that you aren't in a normal BMW. The layout of the dashboard is typical BMW fashioned, centered towards the driver, and there you see the curved one-long piece of glass, which has a digital odometer and infotainment screen. The interior transcends the passengers into the wonderland, as the quality of materials used and the whole vibe is so rich. Plus, the back seat experience is reminiscent of first-class plane seats. Just like Rolls Royce, BMW had done something different to their roof by adding a blue color Alcantara with a little illumination inside it, which is a kind of special feature.Â

Exterior
The most talked about part of the BMW XM is its overall dimension and exterior styling. It feels like a concept design and has the most unique shape unhinged by the BMW style statement. Small dual-cut LED lights accompany the massive kidney grill. The side part makes it look like a van, and from behind, you may not be able to recognize that it's a BMW because designers shifted the BMW logo from the center of the trunk to the top left corner of the rear glass, and that too is a white sticker, not a legit logo. It's a massive car; wherever it goes, it grabs the eyeball towards it. Some call it a piece of art, and others dislike its styling. But one thing to notice is BMW always does experiments. They never stick to one thing or are afraid to get hate. One should study the XM and then decide for themselves whether it suits them or not.

The Mercedes-Benz is the biggest car here, and the Cayenne is the smallest. Audi RS Q8 lies somewhere between, and the heaviest car is BMW XM. Each has its personality, and that’s what attracts different people. Although each car here is superimposing and has an unparalleled road presence, it's the Q8 with the best proportions. It is the perfect car to take on-road and off-road. Porsche has been selling Cayenne with the same body for many years, with minor tweaks, but its sporty style still manages to attract thousands of people. The XM has the most unique body features, and its reviews are polarizing.
Safety
XM is a top-of-the-line $159,000 SUV. Every safety feature that exists is fitted in the XM. BMW is the industry leader when it comes to inventing new technologies that will become the standard of the automotive world. It has added tonnes of technology to the car to make it safe and sound. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test of 2024 XM aren’t available in the public spectrum. We are waiting eagerly to know the details, which we will amplify to educate the fans and admirers of BMW cars.
Key Safety features:

Competition
BMW XM vsPorsche Cayenne Turbo-E hybrid
The 2024 Cayenne packed an astounding 729 hp, which makes it the most powerful SUV in the world. A twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 powers the Porsche along with a battery. The Cayenne is still considered the best SUV of all time, and it is extremely hard to change that position. The XM might have 660 hp, but the massive weight and un-aerodynamic body pull it to the opposite side whenever it tries to take off. The ride and handling is the other aspect where Porsche throws away the XM like a pack of cards. Getting close to Porsche’s handling is in itself a great achievement, and it will take years of research, engineering and testing to reach there. The Cayenne, with its decade-old body, is still more attractive than the XM. The XM is superior in interior features, but that’s not a paramount reason to buy a performance SUV.
BMW XM vs Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG
GLS 63 is a monstrous car, with a 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 sec, which is faster than the more powerful ‘Label Red’ trim of XM. GLS can carry 7 people and still beat the XM in a quarter mile; plus, it's elegant and has the desirability factor to it. Which XM doesn’t have because of its disassociated styling. The XM, with its 644 hp, breaks the laws of physics and reaches 0 to 60 in just 4.1 seconds. It’s that type of car, which is just make it or break it deal for most buyers. The GLS is big and powerful with tons of features in it; however, there isn’t anything crazy about it. It's the XM that creates headlines and has a celebrity status, although a lot of celebrities travel in GLS.
BMW XM vs Audi RS Q8
The Q8 has the best proportions for a performance SUV, and it helps the car in a range of elements. The Q8, with a smaller size and far less weight, has bigger front rotors than XM. The battery eats up the XM trunk space; meanwhile, the Q8 has doubled the trunk capacity. Its trunk is bigger than the Cayenne and GLS. The 591 hp twin-turbo V8 aces the 0 to 60 mph test in just 3.5 sec. Combining the Quattro magic with a V8 and light chassis creates a thunderous combination that performs better than hypercars. The RS Q8 is an underrated car, which is often ignored because it isn’t flamboyant. It maintains its dignity and gets respect wherever it goes, but at this price point, people want a paparazzi following them, and they should create a statement, which is done through an XM. Overall, the RS Q8 is much more fun to drive and comes at a suitable price.
Final Verdict
XM is a flashy car that speaks of wealth. Only a handful can purchase this because it doesn’t offer what it promises. The car's name is XM, but there is very little M in it. The wrong choice of gearbox and the suspension setting really make a hot lap very uncomfortable. It might be the most powerful BMW, and people have different expectations from it, but deep down, it's made with the idea of driving softly, taking pleasure from the M lounge. Taking the car on a red carpet or cruising it on the highway is the best use of XM. So, if you’re looking for a showy car with great numbers on paper and a monster truck-like appearance, then you should go for the XM; however, if you’re looking for an aggressively driven car, then other options will impress you. It might have a couple of issues, but this car makes a statement wherever it goes because of its futuristic and sharp style. BMW broke some rules while designing this and made an ambition of not keeping the wings of imagination locked. Usually, people with great taste in music prefer the XM, who want different things in life.
