Overview

Before the Ford GT was hailed and praised for its Le Mans winning streak alongside Ferrari, Bentley did it all and moved on to making luxury cars. After gaining decades of success in making luxury vehicles, it was time for the English carmaker to offer the ultra-rich people an SUV that can practically do it all. The Bentley Bentayga, with its name derived from the Roque Bentayga of the Canary Islands, hit the markets not too long ago in 2015. Being in production for just three years now, the SUV has been giving other luxo barges in its class some stiff competition but it is nothing short of a luxurious wonder as well. From having its interior laid with the best materials out there including plenty of wood, leather, and metallic inserts, the SUV can take on some seriously challenging terrains, unlike some of its rivals, and can hurl down the roads at speeds close to 190 miles per hour.

Buying Advice

The Bentley Bentayga offers the privilege of extensive customizations irrespective of the trim levels. Hence, you can opt for any trim level you want based on your finances. However, the Signature Edition makes the most sense among the lineup since it gets almost all the creature comfort techs as standard.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2018 Bentley Bentayga arrives with no significant upgrades apart from the three new package options or “trims” that bundle the previously optional features. Powering the SUV weighing in excess of 5,000 lbs is a standard and mammoth 6.0-liter W12 motor that belts out a gut-slapping 600 horsepower along with 664 lb-ft of torque. With those output figures, the SUV nails the 0-60mph run within 4.0 seconds flat, putting some sports cars out there to shame. Sure, there are other big luxury SUVs that cost much less and offer similar or better off-roading capabilities than the Bentayga, but the latter is all about luxury and opulence with the off-roading part coming as a bonus. The 2018 Bentayga’s price starts at an eye-watering $201,425. In its class, the Bentayga goes up against rivals such as Range Rover Supercharged SV Autobiography Dynamic, Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65, and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

Features
9.9/10

The 2018 Bentley Bentayga is a carryover model but gets a total of four trim levels namely the base Onyx Edition, Activity Edition, Signature Edition, and the range-topping Mulliner Edition. The base trim gets creature comfort features such as a fully adjustable air suspension, heated and split-folding rear seats, tri-zone climate control with separate controls, and a panoramic sunroof among other features. The Activity Edition further adds roof rails, a power-operated liftgate, and power-operated rear sunshades. The Signature Edition is the latest addition to the lineup and comes with a significant bump in the feature list. The Signature trim gets a useful list of features such as ADAS techs, multiple off-road driving modes, and underbody protection as standard. The top-end Mulliner trim gets almost all the features as standard and gets bigger 22-inch wheels, the front grille finished in chrome, special veneer designs, and unique interior and exterior colors.

Release Date

The 2018 Bentley Bentayga is expected to hit the dealerships by fall 2017.

Fuel Economy
6.1/10

Luxury chariots carrying six-figure price tags aren’t meant to be highly fuel-efficient except for the hybrids. The Bentley Bentayga is no different than other vehicles of its class. The 6.0-liter W12 is quite a gas guzzler too and it returns an average of 12 mpg in the city limits along with 19 mpg out on the highways. The combined mileage stands at 15 mpg. From the 22.5-gallon gas tank, the Bentayga can cover 270 miles under city driving conditions while out on the highways, the figure rises to 428 miles.

The Range Rover SV is slightly more fuel-efficient than the Bentayga with 14mpg of city mileage and 16mpg of combined mileage figures. The Mercedes-Benz AMG G65 is the least fuel-efficient here but that’s acceptable given the insane amount of power figures the Biturbo V12 churns out. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S impresses with its highway and combined output numbers along with its impressive driving range figures due to the massive gas tank.

Interior
9.0/10

Luxury vehicles are all about having crazy levels of comfort and opulence inside. The 2018 Bentley Bentayga offers just the right amount of luxury inside and then, a lot more. The design is nothing flashy or cutting edge but it’s classy and oozes opulence due to the abundance of leather, wooden panels, veneers, and metallic inserts. All the metallic surfaces and the wooden surfaces get a piano finish and the standard leather upholstery feels comfier than the sofas resting on our humble abodes. The front seats offer exceptional cushioning and fully electronic adjustment functionality. The rear seats can be split folded but also get heating as standard.

The dashboard design is quite similar to other vehicles from the brands and gets that dual-cockpit style layout. The digital-analog instrument cluster has a retro feeling to it while the bright display shows a wide variety of information about the vehicle. The steering wheel is wrapped in premium leather with metallic inserts around the controls and the bottom. The circular aircon vents align with the retro-modern styling of the vehicle perfectly and the centrally positioned analog clock is an excellent touch for that added premium feeling. The center console is thick with glossy surfaces and houses the gear selector stick, the engine start-stop button, a couple of cup holders, and other controls. The climate control buttons are placed below the infotainment screen. The rear passengers also get separate controls for the climate control as well.

The Range Rover SV gets a spacious and opulent cabin too but follows a minimal design theme. The SUV gets plenty of features on board but the overall design looks more modern than the Bentayga’s cabin. The Mercedes-Benz AMG G65 is remarkably luxurious and plush for a boxy SUV and the cabin gets an abundance of leather and metallic surfaces as well. It also boasts the biggest cargo hold measuring about 80 cu-ft with the rear seats folded. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S might feel under-equipped in front of the rivals here but hey it’s the most athletic one here and it kind of makes up for it.

Some standout interior features of the 2018 Bentley Bentayga are:

  • Tri-zone climate control with separate controls for rear passengers
  • Premium leather upholstery along with wooden veneers
  • Fully power-adjustable front seats
  • Split-folding rear seats with heating function

How intuitive is the 2018 Bentley Bentayga’s infotainment system?

Given the exorbitant price tag of the 2018 Bentayga, one might expect a plethora of standard infotainment features as standard. However, it’s just the opposite. Android Auto is non-existent for the vehicle while Apple CarPlay is an optional extra. The standard 8-inch touchscreen display is sharp and responsive and the menu layout is user-friendly too. Navigation and Wi-Fi are standard though.

Some of the standout infotainment features available with the Bentley Bentayga are:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Navigation
  • Privacy glass(optional)
  • Mood lighting(optional)

Exterior
9.0/10

The 2018 Bentley Bentayga looks like a beefed-up version of the Continental brothers from the front and the huge front grille announces the vehicle’s arrival almost everywhere it goes. The headlamp units do look unique with Bentley’s iconic jewel-style design and the circular turn indicator lights placed alongside the headlamps house pop-out headlamp washers. The side profile is simple while the stylish wheels make up for the lack of side-profile design. The rear profile is also minimalistic but the LED taillamps look cool with a floating effect. The SUV does get optional wheels measuring 21 and 22 inches which further enhances the appeal of the SUV.

No wonder the Range Rover SV gets a towering ground clearance of 8.7 inches that helps it to tackle a variety of terrains despite being a luxury SUV. The exterior styling feels premium as per Land Rover’s standards but the Bentayga still wins. The Mercedes-Benz AMG G65 heavily compromises the ground clearance aspect to withstand the ridiculous power figures it is capable of producing. It is also the most compact one here due to its boxy design. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is the sportiest looking SUV here with a subtle hint of aggressiveness on its front fascia.

Some of the standout exterior features include:

  • 21" Wheels
  • Underbody protection
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Auto-dimming ORVMs (optional)

Safety
8.0/10

Vehicles like the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls Royce are super expensive and crash testing one isn’t cheap either. However, it doesn’t indicate that these luxury chariots are unsafe. The 2018 Bentley Bentayga comes with a strong body shell along with a solid build quality too. The ADAS systems are not standard unfortunately but the City driving packs add them to the vehicle’s armory. The ADAS include a forward collision alert with mitigation, traffic sign recognition, rear cross-traffic alert, and a top-view camera system.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2018 Bentley Bentayga include:

  • Six airbags
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Reverse camera
  • Pre-collision warning system

Competition
6.0/10

2018 Bentley Bentayga vs 2018 Range Rover SV Autobiography

The Bentley Bentayga sees not-so-strong competitors in its class, but the Range Rover Autobiography manages to keep up with its level. The Autobiography feels more modern on the inside and offers terrific levels of comfort too. Moreover, it is slightly more fuel-efficient than the Bentayga here. The Range Rover costs less than the Bentayga too but offers almost similar performance. On the inside though, things get a bit preference-based since the Range Rover SV gets heavy doses of modern design ethos inside.

2018 Bentley Bentayga vs 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG G65

One might think that the Bentayga is a mighty vehicle in terms of performance but the Mercedes-Benz AMG G65 with its ridiculous power stats might change a potential buyer’s mind. The AMG G65 gets a well-appointed interior but the boxy and ruggedness are still very much pronounced. The fuel economy is equally terrible but the SUV is more performance-based rather than practical. The cargo capacity onboard the G65 is exceptionally generous and you can store big items without any problems.

2018 Bentley Bentayga vs 2018 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is one of the most athletic SUVs in its entire class and can make you feel confused from behind the wheel too. The SUV is surprisingly fuel-efficient. On the inside, it is nowhere near the Bentayga in terms of opulence and abundance of woods but the overall layout and the controls inside the cabin are user-friendly. Performance-wise, it is quicker than the Bentayga and is cheaper too.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Bentley Bentayga is the one for those who wish to feel right at home even while going over broken patches of tarmac. The SUV also gets numerous customization options right from the base Onyx trim but disappoints with its standard list of features. The SUV also offers a terrific ride quality and the active roll bar system steals the show with its impressive performance while keeping the SUV in control. Even though the Bentayga can be compared to some slightly cheaper luxury SUVs, there are no direct competitors of the vehicle yet. If you plan on getting one for yourself, you cannot be more right.
